I just about lost it when Bombur started with the air guitar [In reply to] Can't Post

I can tell poor fat Bombur is going to be a large part of the comic relief in this troupe. That fat suit is hilariously bouncy. The whole bunch look to be ripe for hilarity, really.

"The Naugrim were ever, as they still remain, short and squat in stature; they were deep-breasted, strong in the arm, and stout in the leg, and their snouts were long. Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man nor Elf has ever seen a snoutless Dwarf - unless he were rhinoplasted in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have snouts from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike..." (History of Middle Earth, volume 11, The War of the Truffles, p. 205)

Songs... [In reply to] Can't Post

Merry and Pippin's song at the Green Dragon was not entirely made up, part of it was taken from the song Pippin, Sam and Frodo were singing in Woody End right before they hear the scream of the Nazgul, before they get to Maggot's farm.
Pippin's song in Minas Tirith was also taken from the chapter "Three's company".
As for "O Elbereth, Gilthoniel", you can hear it when Frodo and Sam are travelling through the woods and see the elves going to the havens. I don't remember whether the O Elbereth bit is in the movie or not, but it is in the soundtrack.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...

..The land of long-forgotten name:
......no man may ever anchor near;
..No steering star his hope may aim,
......for nether Night its marches drear,
..And waters wide no sail may tame,
......with shores encircled dark and sheer.

..O! Haven where my heart would be!
......the waves beat upon thy bar
..For ever echo endlessly,
......when longing leads thy thought afar

I'm sure the set is full of Khuzdul dialect coaches [In reply to] Can't Post

Considering how much attention was paid to the correct pronunciation of the Elvish in LOTR, I don't think we have much to worry about. It is most likely as you said: the actors have a preconceived way of saying the names, but the directors and Tolkien language experts on set will keep them straight wherever dialogue is concerned.

Is Kili the dwarvish equivalent of a red-headed stepchild? [In reply to] Can't Post

He's just too much fun to beat up on! But I also mean in a more literal sense, in that Thorin may have been reluctant to take him and Fili along, but did so perhaps out of obligation to their mother Dis, his sister. I wasn't able to get a good look at Fili, but just seeing Kili there among the older, well-bearded fellows made him seem really far out of his element, almost like an outcast. I wonder if he'll be played more as a rebellious kid or as an awkward youngster still finding his feet and trying in vain to gain his uncle's respect.

I'm normally a rather stoic fellow, but that last shot made me clap my hands in glee [In reply to] Can't Post

It's good to see PJ mending fences with Christopher Lee by going to the UK himself to film Saruman's scenes. I wonder if the other actors in his scenes were present via teleconference?

Pippen's song [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the info, Evernight. I didn't connect it with the Woody End song because it was so sad in the film, while in the original context in Three Is Company, it seemed to me to be a typical walking song--even though it was partially serious in tone, I still imagined the melody as being somewhat on the cheerful side, in true hobbit-fashion.

Gollum's Cave looks like it's staight from John Howe's scetchbook.

I'm little suprised the White Council is going to take place in Rivendell - perhaps I shouldn't be, but for some reason I had just assumed they're going to build a new set for that purpose.

I'm not entirely convinced of the new Elven costumes. Some of the material on Elrond's and Galadriel's costumes look too modern and industrial, not really Medieval enough.

Agreed, let's hope they find a way to get Saruman into the Dol Guldur attack!

Kili looks like a complete wet-eared kid next to real men! XD I can see why you wish they don't bring any more attention to it, but I kind of want the other Dwarves to belittle him and make fun of him, and possibly even consider him to be the ugly one.

Plus, I think we should have buried Tolkien in a larger coffin, he probably cant turn very well in his. -Rossmonster

This video blog shows how good PJ is at dreaming up framing devices... [In reply to] Can't Post

he used the "being lost--where am I" to go into the PInewood stuff and kept it up as a device. Inserting Saruman there was a touch of genius. It strikes me that PJ's not a bad actor himself.

Their names aren't Khuzdul, but Old Norse [In reply to] Can't Post

So I wonder what route they'll take to pronouncing them. I remember some of the names in LotR were purposefully pronounciated worng, because people were expecting to hear the "wrong pronounciation" after saying the names like that for decades.

Bilbo mentioned the Troll argument in LotR [In reply to] Can't Post

He told about it to the Hobbit children. "They were all arguing how they would cook us: would they ----" and so on, I can't remember the whole quote exactly.

I have high hopes the culinary agument scene is kept. I imagine the Dwarves are going to get captured after putting up a fight, after which the Trolls start to argue about how to cook them.

Yes, but I also expect [In reply to] Can't Post

that their faces will be visible while the trolls deliberate, so we can get reaction shots. So either they'll be tied up but not in sacks, or they will be put into sacks with their heads sticking out. This for the same reason that makes every lead actor in an action movie fight without a helmet, or take it off, or at least raise his face guard in the middle of the action, just to make sure that you can see his face.

This is one of my cinematic pet peeves, along with people leaving doors sitting wide open while there are supposedly raging blizzards going on outside. Tongue

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

The one on the left and the one in the middle [In reply to] Can't Post

are just the same costume in different colour, and perhaps in different texture. But I don't complain, because I really like them. It's Elvish and yet not slavishly identical to what Hugo wore in LotR.

However, the costume on the right look a bit wierd. The colours are (probably intentionally) similar to his Council of Elrond robe, but the shape is all baggy. Maybe it just seems like that because of Hugo's posture, and will look better when he's standing or moving.

Perhaps the lighting [In reply to] Can't Post

and the way things are shot will alter the appearance of some of the materials somewhat. Maybe they're going for a sort of Elven cloth-of-gold effect, but more fluid?

Bare arms? And the sheer white one seems to have some silver sparkles that remind me far too much of either my high school prom or that cheap Halloween fabric they sell at Wal-mart. The grey overdress just seems blocky and heavy to me, a long way away from her flowy, beaded gowns of LOTR.

and not as good as in LotR. However, I do like the shape of the white dress. The bare arms aren't such a strech when you remember Arwen's "you can see my thights" Dream Gown...

The material might seem better on film. And anyway, I'm happy the new designer isn't just copying Ngila but going for something new. Otherwise I couldn't really respect her that much, I guess.

Because he's young... [In reply to] Can't Post

One them made the comment he didn't have a beard because he was young, so that seems like what they are going with in the film, his beard hasn't all come in yet, which was also one of the ideas tossed about here. I dare say he will get a fair bit of teasing about it and he looks like a young dwarf to me.

Never had a doubt in my mind that RA would make a great Thorin and seeing him in action is even more convincing than the still photo. :)

I just about died when Saruman came on! That was fantastic. And I loved "Daddy" from John Rhys Davies. :)

In Reply To
And for those theorizing that it's because he has to cut it off because of the spiders' webs, he's clearly already beardless in the Bag End scenes. He does at least have a decent-looking dwarf nose, but he still looks like a dwelf!
