Some thoughts... [In reply to] Can't Post

  • Glad to see (and hear) that there'll be music.
  • I'm still a little bit worried about Kili, along with Tauriel that is the only thing I don't quite like yet about these films. However, I'll wait until I walk out of the theather to make my final judgement (as it should be).
  • Thorin looked older than in the promotional picture, good.
  • Galadriel, I love thee. Heart
  • Christopher Lee, you are a legend.

Chemistry! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was glad to see real honest chemistry between the actors. That was a big part of the success of LoTR imho. They look like they would be happy to have a beer together off set.

I'm such a rube that in the very beginning I was actually wondering "They filmed parts of the James Bond movies in New Zealand?" Then I saw the Pinewood Studio shot...du-uh.

The dwarves remind me a bit of Klingons but in the best possible way. I like Klingons.

I liked the look of all of them...especially Thorin.

Kili just looked young to me. I can imagine a young Gimli back home pouting and angry "How come HE got to go?"Wink Speaking of Gimli it was great to see JRD on set and to hear words of wisdom for the dwarves.

Great to see the old faces returning, especially Christopher Lee. That was a surprise.

I'm just happy they're including songs. [In reply to] Can't Post

I really missed the songs in LOTR.

And I hope they're not replacing the dwarves kitchen cleanup song with the cow jumping over the moon.

OMFG so much win! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been pretty calm about this whole process up till now, but seeing this last video diary.... SO DAMN EXCITED! I want to see this movie NOW! Seeing Lee back in full garb was epic, but for me the highlight was Cate. We've heard so little about her involvement till now, and then wham, there she is on set looking stunning.

The Dwarves truly look fantastic. I had no real problem with the promo shots but I wasn't sure if they really felt like a group of Dwarves. Seeing them all interact together on set has washed away all my doubts though, I even like Kili's look.

All you have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to you...

Good stuff [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ being inexplicably transported to Pinewood was pretty hilarious – they better put these things on the DVD. The Dwarves generally look better in their element and surrounded by sets and more natural lighting than they do when they're photoshopped into a giant grey background, as we knew they would. I'm feeling a bit better about Armitage as Thorin – he looks like he'll be a cool Dwarf leader, even if he's not really the character I took from the book. I'm afraid I'm still not feeling Kili – he just doesn't look like a Dwarf, and there's practically no resemblance between him and his brother. It looks like they're turning the Trollshaws sequence into a battle, which is not surprising; I'll have to see the final product before I decide what I make of the change, but hopefully the Dwarf-sacks and the troll argument are still in there somewhere. Cate and Hugo have hardly aged, and while I don't have the same passion some members here feel for costumes, it looks like the filmmakers have come up with some interesting new things for them to wear – I don't want them to look exactly like their Lord of the Rings selves. The scene with the Dwarves gathered around Bilbo's table for dinner looks suitably chaotic, and I can definitely get behind Bifur going crazy and sending the whole thing to hell (a bit like the scene in Time Bandits where the dwarves are performing for Napoleon). It was great to see John Rhys-Davies turning up, and seeing Christopher Lee as Saruman was just the icing on the cake. I hope he has a pretty substantial role in the film.

re: "I really missed the songs in LOTR. " [In reply to] Can't Post

So did I. We heard snippets of "The Road Goes Ever On and On," Strider singing a bit of "The Lay of Luthien," Gollum croaking out his greatest hit, "Ode To a Fishhhhh," Cool and that little poem by Sam about Gandalf's fireworks, but that's about it, as far as I recall.
There were a number of songs that were made up for the films (Merry & Pippen's "Green Dragon" song, Pippen's song while Denethor was eating, and some Elven songs); and of course, there was Eowyn's funeral song, and Aragorn's song at his coronation. but very few songs by Tolkien . I was hoping to hear "O Elbereth, Gilthoniel" at least once.
But I'm very happy that there will be suitable music in TH, and I love the tone of the film, from the little bit I've seen, so far.

"Become who you were born to be!"

“Now for some music!” said Thorin. “Bring out the instruments!” [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
Kili and Fili rushed for their bags and brought back little fiddles; Dori, Nori, and Ori brought out flutes from somewhere inside their coats; Bombur produced a drum from the hall; Bifur and Bofur went out too, and came back with clarinets that they had left among the walking-sticks. Dwalin and Balin said: “Excuse me, I left mine in the porch!” “Just bring mine in with you!” said Thorin. They came back with viols as big as themselves, and with Thorin’s harp wrapped in a green cloth. It was a beautiful golden harp, and when Thorin struck it the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else, and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over The Water and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill.

The dark came into the room from the little window that opened in the side of The Hill; the firelight flickered—it was April—and still they played on, while the shadow of Gandalf’s beard wagged against the wall.

The dark filled all the room, and the fire died down, and the shadows were lost, and still they played on. And suddenly first one and then another began to sing as they played, deep-throated singing of the dwarves in the deep places of their ancient homes; and this is like a fragment of their song, if it can be like their song without their music.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
Then dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

As they sang the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves. Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick. He looked out of the window. The stars were out in a dark sky above the trees. He thought of the jewels of the dwarves shining in dark caverns. Suddenly in the wood beyond The Water a flame leapt up—probably somebody lighting a wood-fire—and he thought of plundering dragons settling on his quiet Hill and kindling it all to flames. He shuddered; and very quickly he was plain Mr. Baggins of Bag-End, Under-Hill, again.

I can't wait to see what Howard Shore has in store for us with this scene. I wonder what a dwarvish viol looks like, and whether they'll lose them along with the ponies when the goblins attack them in the mountains. Come to think of it, how and why did they bring "viols as big as themselves" and a full-sized harp all the way to Bag End with them? Something tells me they'll be scaled down a bit for the film. Collapsible cellos, perhaps?

"The Naugrim were ever, as they still remain, short and squat in stature; they were deep-breasted, strong in the arm, and stout in the leg, and their snouts were long. Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man nor Elf has ever seen a snoutless Dwarf - unless he were rhinoplasted in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have snouts from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike..." (History of Middle Earth, volume 11, The War of the Truffles, p. 205)

I almost passed out watching this! Wink

This has to be the MOST AMAZING video yet!

The dwarves look SO much better in real life than in the photo!

As I watched this, I was somewhere between hyperventilation and joyful delirium.... And just when I would recover from the last surprise, something new would pop up - Cate, John R.D., Gollum saying, "Bless us and splash us, precious!"

And to top it all off, SAURUMAN is back! it was great to Christopher Lee!

I am SOOOOO excited, and the next 14 months shall pass like 14 bazillion years...

Kili has even less of a beard than in the promo photo! [In reply to] Can't Post

And for those theorizing that it's because he has to cut it off because of the spiders' webs, he's clearly already beardless in the Bag End scenes. He does at least have a decent-looking dwarf nose, but he still looks like a dwelf!

They will have hoods, I guarantee it [In reply to] Can't Post

I had thought the instruments might have fallen into that "childish" category and get cut, but if they're still in, the hoods will be. Trust me, PJ has probably heard enough about the hoods already that if by some weird chance they had neglected to put them in, they would doubtless have to go back and do it in pickups later!
