A lot of people liked the Gimli humor too though [In reply to] Can't Post

When I saw The Two Towers EE in theaters recently, plenty of people laughed at the jokes. I think it's more because they provide a bit of emotional relief from a pretty intense movie (especially on the big screen) than because they're particularly hilarious. Personally, I'm okay with some of it but there are some Gimli bits that still make cringe.

Bifurcate [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
If they are using Bifur as a play on "bifurcate" (in the sense if dividing into two branches,) they might also be going for a split-personality disorder with him as a result of the accident, somewhat as DrDeath suggested.

You'd think they'd have enough trouble distinguishing 13 dwarves, without splitting one into two personalities. ;)

Time for a 'Hobbit' filk? [In reply to] Can't Post

That almost sounds like a challenge! So who will be the first one to actually write the "Hero of Lake-town" filk-song based on the song "The Hero of Canton" in the "Jaynestown" episode of Firefly? It might start like this:

Bard.
The man they call Bard...

I wonder if he'll fight with it like Sam and his frying pan. Wink

I'm delighted to see such impressive attention to detail - just like in the LOTR movies, especially when there's an added bit of subtle humor to it. I bet we see lots of little personal details like that that will further serve to set these wonderful characters apart.

Yes, no, maybe so... [In reply to] Can't Post

Don't know if it supports or undermines the theory, but Bifur translates from the Old Norse as something like "Trembler."

Bofur [In reply to] Can't Post

You can see Bofur (and Bifur I think) around the table in the Empire picture of Bag End and they look much more 'real' than they do here. I think these pictures have been 'stylized' (if that's the word I'm looking for) to a degree and look much more cartoony that what we will eventually see on screen.

That Empire Pic [In reply to] Can't Post

Judging from that picture, I'm going to guess that Dwalin is the one with the white beard and the bald one is Balin (as we all know full well which one Thorin is).

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

I think it's the other way round. [In reply to] Can't Post

Balin's age is emphasised in the book, and I think the filmmakers will stay true to it by making him the white-haired one.

If Tolkien was writing the movie script... [In reply to] Can't Post

... I think the Old Norse meaning might very stand a chance of playing some part in Bifur's more detailed characterisation (although -- who knows precisely what traits the word 'trembler' might contribute).

However, the English meaning of Bifur (or at least bifurcation) could've been suggestive when the actual screenwriters began their necessary task of fleshing out Tolkien's rather rough character sketches (well, rough in some cases).

The good, the bad and the ugly [In reply to] Can't Post

Mixed feelings! We can see that the costumes and weapons are wonderfully detailed, as always. I now think Fili actually looks fantastic he's got the prosthetic 'Gimli-esque' touches that make him believable as a member of the Dwarven race but still allow the actor's face to shine through, and that twinkle in his eyes is certainly endearing (and for some reason reminds me of Tom Hardy's character from Inception). On the other hand, it's now crystal clear that Kili doesn't have a beard... of any description... whatsoever. Designer stubble all the way. He's even more of an Aragolas than I thought he was. I just don't understand how they could get Fili so right but get Kili so wrong.

He does remind me of someone, i'm not sure exactly who but i want to say Richard Hammond.

With that crazed look in his eye, I'm kind of getting the vibe of mad Stephen the Irishman from Braveheart (played by David O'Hara, although the actors themselves don't really resemble one another.)

It is quite a different look with them all together. I think I'm starting to get Mr. Jackson's idea here. And I'm willing to see how it all pans out--things may still be adjusted here and there before the films come out.

Thanks for doing this!Smile

All beards are special. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's just some are more special than others.

Now isn't that special!

******************************************
Brothers, sisters,
I was Elf once.
We danced together
Under the Two Trees.
We sang as the soft gold of Laurelin
And the bright silver of Telperion,
Brought forth the dawn of the world.
Then I was taken.

Brothers, sisters,
In my torment I kept faith,
And I waited.
But you never came.
And when I returned you drew sword,
And when I called your names you drew bow.
Was my Eldar beauty all,
And my soul nothing?

So be it.
I will return your hatred,
And I am hungry.

Okay, I've slept on it. [In reply to] Can't Post

And my opinions have modified somewhat.

Bombur is starting to grow on me, vacuous expression and all. I'm digging his...sphericalness. I can't wait to see the others trying to cart him around after his little dip in the black river. Heh!

Bofur is still fine. One presumes he won't always be wearing that ridiculous hat.

But I still hate Bifur. Or, rather, I hate that thing sticking out of his head. Even in modern times with modern medicine, you simply can't survive with a chunk of metal imbedded in your brain. Fantasy, or good fantasy, must still abide by certain rules of believability, unless your name is Mary Sue and you're writing bad fan fiction. So I'm hoping the "ornament" gets lost between now and December 2012.
