...is straight-up slapstick. All of these Dwarves (and their descriptions) are working perfectly for me. Their look, primarily, is humorous, mirroring the absurd situation of the story. We will be compelled to love them all immediately. As the story quickly becomes more desperate and tragic, we will 'feel it' the more, as in the book.

I agree, I think the level of detail is amazing but it's the diversity that really gets me. I think it's incredible what they've managed to do, with really relatively little to work with. I think they are going to look amazing together - I can just imagine how overwhelmed poor Bilbo will be when this crew shows up on his doorstep! :)
I never expected to get so much detail and diversity from the dwarves everytime I thought of Hobbit being converted to a movie. This is phenomenal, and no matter what we get from the missing dwarves, as a group, these dwarves are going to look magnificent!
It just makes the fact that they are making two Hobbit movies even more relevant now.

Not to get off subject.....but Kili is SOOOOO out of place when looking at all of them - and maybe that is intentional. I mean if Kili comes in with this Inigo-Montoya-You-killed-my-father-Prepare-to-die kind of attitude and Fili with this Viking-like-Erol-Flynn-swashbuckling attitude, it may work. But really, I am still very disappointed in Kili.
You know, to me Bofur(I think? James Nesbitt) looks EVERY bit as "human" as Kili supposedly does, maybe even more so, at least Kili looks a bit exotic. :) And his nose is decidely NON big or bulbous at all.
The only real difference is that Bofur is just older and his belt is hanging lower. He's not even that heavy beyond what looks like a bit of a beer gut. Same with Fili, the only reason he looks "heavier" is because his costume has that big fur collar but if you really look at it, he's pretty slender too and his "beard" appears to be just a rather short goatee.
IMO the problem isn't really that Kili looks too human--he looks no more human than either of those two-- it's that he's too "goodlooking"(I mean, it's not a problem for me, but for some apparently:)).
Yet logically if there can be dwarves who look like Bofur and look like Fili, there can be dwarves who look like Kili. (and I still think Kili's going to be the ugly dwarf so his supposed good looks will not only be not quite so shiny in the actual film but will not be considered a plus either:))
ETA: and just to ask here as well, has anyone gotten a hold of a higher res/larger photo of Fili and Kili as are available for the other dwarves.

PJ, as director, is the one who signs off on all designs, regardless of where they came from. IIRC most of the designs in LOTR came from Art Department staff, not the director.
PJ stated early on that he wanted 13 individual dwarfs with distinct personalities. (The temptation to scale back the party to a more manageable number must have been staggering... I think we are just now getting a glimpse as to why.) Assuming that for each dwarf their dialogue will be close to being as limited or non-existent as in the book, the best way to ensure that we are able to differentiate among them and get a taste of their unique personalities is via their appearance.
Having said that, the factor most likely affecting their appearance is that there is a different costume designer/head of wardrobe than the one that worked on LOTR. Who ever they are, they likely are trying to make their own mark with TH rather than slavishly copying Ngila Dickson's aesthetic. Should point out as well that although many crew from LOTR are working on TH, the new costume designer most likely brought on staff they usually work with.

rather than as individuals. I find that seeing them together (which is likely the way we will see them most often) takes the edge off their individual peculiarities... they're a great looking bunch so far.

...but the vision for the main characters of the Hobbit was likely established by the writers and directors, which means PJ, GDT, Philippa and Fran, and it is a very strong possibility that they asked for very specific types of looks and costumes for the dwarves.I don't think it is at all possible that a new costume designer just up and decided to go in a completely new direction with dwarf looks. There was most definitely some very heavy writer/director input here. These images aren't just images, they tell very specific stories, and I'm sure they asked for that.

Although I'm sure Tolkien never described him (or any dwarf, for that matter) as having cute dimple in his/her cheeks. Maybe someone can look it up.

I have to say that, the more I see of the dwarves, the more completely stoked I am about this group of actors/characters. Bravo to PJ and crew for having the courage to take on so many characters (they could have taken the easy route and cut the number of dwarves down to a more manageable size), and for giving us such a delightful mix. I think this crew will be intriguing us for quite some time!

would have made suggestions. And certainly having final say on designs means that they can ask for designs to be reworked or scrapped altogether, depending.
But there would be little point in hiring professional designers etc if their talent and vision was not expected to shine through. I would even go so far as to say that no self respecting designer would work on a film, no matter how big it was, if all they were allowed to do was act as a police sketch artist.

it makes a difference when you see them up and close. As for these dwarfs, Bombur is the most "intriguing" one for me, he reminds me of a character in Alice in Wonderland or something. And Bifur's hair will compete with Nori's originality.
And Bofur is the second smiling dwarf along with Fili. Each dwarf is showing to be very unique and not really blended as i thought they would be. They will all somehow stand out from one another and i really like that.

While PJ signs off on the overall look of each character, it's up to the costume designer and her crew to make them a reality and that will inform a hundred little details - like the exact height of a boot or the decision to use leather trim instead of embroidery or cotton velvet instead of silk - all of which can add up to a very different view than a different designer would make given the same sketch.

In the original text I don't recall any of the dwarves poking fun at Bombur about his weight. The novel's narrator (Tolkien) may have done so in a light-hearted way, appropriate for a children's book (as in "Poor Bombur had to be pulled from the river/dragged through the forest/stuffed into a barrel/hoisted up the mountain, etc...."). Hopefully, this same approach will be used in the film. I could see the visual comedy being played up in the film, but it would be nice if his size never really bothers the other dwarves, almost like it wasn't a big deal for them in a non-judgemental way. Not to be too PC about it, but hopefully the film doesn't have to resort to the cliche of making him have an eating disorder, or having the other dwarves mocking/cursing him over his weight for a few laughs.

I guess deep down I was expecting these 13 would have a greater resemblence to Gimli and the Dwarve Lords. I hope the outlandishness of some of them isn't an indication that they'll resort to corny humour - ie, the Brownies from 'Willow'.
