Just a guess... [In reply to] Can't Post

but the red markers are probably lock points for computer set extensions. I'm not sure what you are referring to as a laser, but that probably has something to do with the motion capture set-up, which I might add, has the first self-illuminated mocap suit that I've ever seen. (because it has to shot in the darkness) -very cool.

I'm guessing in the shot from behind [In reply to] Can't Post

We're actually dealing with Freeman's scale double wearing a mask (a technique they used in LotR in a limited capacity). I can't be certain, but the proportion of the arms are of a smaller person whereas in the front-on shots, the fact Martin's kneeling is disguised somewhat by the balustrade.

I'm becoming more and more convinced by Freeman actually. Originally i thought he was almost 'too obvious' a choice but hearing his Ian Holm voice in the first video, then the slight worry about his informal look in the Empire photos and now in full Bilbo regalia (the red smoking jacket is a bit lighter and brighter than my preference but it's cool enough) i am getting the official Bilbo feeling off him- this country gent having to pull on his underused guile to get through these events alive.

The little snippet of Gollum in Riddles in the Dark was cool- sans digital effects pretty much as close as we've seen to the cinematic result so far. I'm kind of hoping that with Gollum we'll see a more 'whole' version of his personality. I wasn't particularly fond of the polarised personality showboating that went on in LotR, and i feel that the two sides should be a lot closer in The Hobbit given the relative security he feels in his cave with the Ring. There's more of a grey area, more Slinker and Stinker rather than Smeagol and Gollum. I also hope Riddles in the Dark isn't the last we see of him. I think it would make sense that he leaves his cave as quickly as possible following Bilbo's escape- it's no longer safe for him to be living down there without the Ring to protect him from trouble, and i think it would be more cinematic if he had some expanded role which could come to a convenient end when he's captured by the elves of mirkwood, making use of the events recounted by Legolas during the Council of Elrond in the books. In fact the idea that when Beorn comes back when they're staying with him and tells them he's been out killing goblins, Bilbo could have a further moment of remorse for Gollum in hoping he isn't what Beorn caught before seeing the remains and so this expanded role will allow Gollum to get a bit more of the time his LotR role would call for than simply having him appear as a cameo monster along the way.

The sets shown at the beginning of the video is definately Dol Guldur, it matches the description of the set in Empire and the plant matter is a total give-away. I'm hoping Goblin town will be a bit more organic in terms of it's architecture anyway- some strange trogladytic hive of goblins with a whiff of Shelob's lair crossed with Isengard's caverns (only without the scaffolding). It should feel that the dwarves and Bilbo are interlopers in some kind of hornets' nest, individual 'cells' overhanging the main thoroughfare where Goblins sleep or just watch, layers of overhanging tunnels like airducts that they can suddenly drop down from or grab at the dwarves (possibly being the way they could leap on Bilbo and drag him off or back from Dori and the dwarves). It's the kind of PJ playground of nastiness that will make for something rather different than the analogous Moria sequence in Fellowship.

The pony looks partially blocked by Bilbo, but it looks like stone troll legs to me in the center background of the picture.

Is this a sketch of Thorin in Thranduil's hall? [In reply to] Can't Post

First, I freely admit to adapting the image in this link from TORN's image #23. When I noticed the large paper on the center of the table, I realized it was an Alan Lee sketch and decided to take a closer look. I've rotated and cropped the screen grab down to the sketch, then stretched it out to make it look "flatter," and finally sharpened the contrast.

Do you see what I see? The architecture looks Elvish, but not like Rivendell; and that could be Thranduil standing on the left with Thorin kneeling on the right, guarded by two other Elves. What do you all think?

It's not. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's the reference camera. There is a camera dangling about 6 inches away from Andy's face that is used to pick up every nuance in his expressions in order to get the best match possible with the CG Gollum.

A deliberate hint? [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree, the way they showed PJ and Andy sitting together at that desk made me wonder if they were hinting about Frodo's scene with old Bilbo.

Nice! [In reply to] Can't Post

A little quirky humor from Bilbo as well while sneaking around, it appears. I really think Martin is going to nail Bilbo in the same fashion that Ian did in LotR.

But then... [In reply to] Can't Post

... why have they got Bilbo's desk set up exactly as it was in 'Concerning Hobbits' at the beginning of 'Fellowship'? The vase of flowers is that detail that particularly catches my eye - it matches, and a vase of flowers is such an ephemeral thing. Also, if you look at the pictures to the right of the set in the wide shot, which someone has speculated are photo references, the figure in them, so far as you can make it out at all, looks more like Bilbo than Frodo to me because the hair is too light in colour for Frodo.

I don't know why this should be but I'm as sure as I can be from here that it is.

...not trying to make a lot of them, honest! But the second one down on the left is someone with an open book before him, and it's too fair for Frodo. So I'm just saying maybe, just maybe, with the desk being set up as it was for Ian Holm's Bilbo....

Hang it, what else have we got to do but guess what these things might mean! It's a long time from now until next Christmas....

*Black* Book of Westmarch?? [In reply to] Can't Post

I noticed that the book on Bilbo's desk (Images 4 and 5) which PJ mysteriously keeps his elbow on the whole time looks black rather than red/burgundy. Is this, then, going to be a different book than the one in which Bilbo writes The Hobbit? If so, what do you think the old hobbit is up to writing (or reading) this time?
