I see at least 3 ponies... [In reply to] Can't Post

The one partially obscured by Bilbo on the right, the one in the center and at least another one left to that one.

To those who put this together, you *rock*! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for giving us a chance to have a good old look at scenes in the video!

I get the feeling that PJ staged the backgrounds deliberately to give fans a lot of things to pick over, such as the FOTR screencaps in image 6. Good on you, Sir PJ.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

I wouldn't be at all surprised. Quite apart from his prowess as a director, he seems to be a neat guy with respect for his fans, whom he seems to enjoy.

Agreed. I too thought the roots suggested Mirkwood Forest more than Misty Mountain Cave. [In reply to] Can't Post

I could be wrong of course. But my thoughts mirrored yours, and I was thinking of posting about it. But you beat me to it. Lol. There are roots and the beginnings of trees wrapped around some of those Pillars, and there seem to be leaves along the ground. I wouldn't expect much leaf detritus deep in a mountain cavern. Your comments about Sylvester only add probability to our suspiscion.

In Reply To
I'm not convinced that all these sets are Goblin-town. We've got lots of roots going in all directions, which you wouldn't expect to see deep under the mountain. Also Sylvester McCoy was filming in this block, which means that they likely have been shooting some scenes at Rhosgobel or Dol Guldur. Some of those shots look more to me like Dol Guldur, which may have the look of a fortress being reclaimed by the forest.

Scene with Bilbo & Elrond [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, I'm probably being dumb here, but how do they do that? I thought they used clever photography techniques to make people taller and shorter, but Hugo Weaving seems over twice as tall as Martin Freeman, when obviously he isn't, and we see the front and back view ??!? Is Hugo Weaving on stilts, or what?

Bilbo's desk in 04 and 05.... [In reply to] Can't Post

... looks as if it's set up as it is in 'Concerning Hobbits' at the beginning of 'Fellowship'. It has a matching vase of flowers and looks quite cluttered. When Frodo sits there at the end of 'Return' the flowers are different and it all looks tidier. Does that give any hints about the 'framing device'?

Dol Guldur and locations... [In reply to] Can't Post

A fair point - the woods + heavy Morgul architecture is suggestive of this.

In the second half of the video about location scouting I >still< think they should use Mt. Taranaki.... It's a classic lonely mountain!

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Really not convinced about Bilbo's ears... [In reply to] Can't Post

In the scene with Elrond they make him look like some sort of pixie. In LotR, although they were prosthetic, most hobbit ears were covered with their hair most of the time so they hardly noticed.
Here Bilbo looks like he'll start doing some silly fairy dance any second...

I think you're right [In reply to] Can't Post

At first I thought it was Goblin-town, but at the beginning of the video PJ says "Sky darkens" and we see him sitting in a dark room, then a shot to what looks like the same set that Andy Serkis was in. It seems more likely to be Mirkwood because why would PJ mention the sky darkening in the caves under the Misty Mountains?

I see three ponies [In reply to] Can't Post

You're right. The screenshot makes it look like there's only one pony, but if after watching the video the other two "lumps" are ponies (the one in the middle rears its head and you see mane and a nose). Perhaps this is in Trollshaw and Bilbo is just beginning to sneak a peek at the trolls, trying to hush the ponies as he makes his way closer to them? There's definitely a lot of trees around. This set also looks similar to the campground set in Image 09, so it seems likely it is Trollshaw.

Earlier Posts mentioned the Red Dots? [In reply to] Can't Post

In shot 7 "Riddles in Dark" if you look closely in the Lower Left there is a Green Lazar Pointer-Type Device mounted on a Green Tripod next to the Big Leico Light with Barn-doors projecting Red dots on the Rocks. This to me,
is the Distanceing-Device
to help the 3D artists at their Montors..
to keep the Levels of 3D
BIGGER if they want? or smaller, if needed.

If you look around the Entire Screen Cap

they are in many Places, even way back in the Background or High in the shot...WHY?,
I think I know.
Distortion on purpose

to add to the Creepieness, the "Gollum-ness",
of this Scene.

(Remember "the GET OFF the Road" FrodoShot in FOTR?

Or used agian in Shelob's Cave?) when Gollum adondons him and we first see Her Highness?

It's a regular Camera Lens effect that is best described as "Lens Pull-in with a Zoom out?"

When we rig Big Rock&Roll shows, the Roadies need what is called "Precise Hanging Points"
for their Lights and Speakers for many reasons.

Later in Andy's First Block...good-bye shots you can see peices of Highly reflective squares of RED Tape....
another way
in "Wicked" Stagecraft to do this.

The curent advancement(at 48 frames a second?) in 3D Filmaking are making use of ALL these old
"Tricksey, Sneaksy Devices....

Leave it to PJ&CO
who hired the BEST of the BEST!
in the 5th Age of this world...
to reinvent Filmaking..2 More TIMES!

Ain't it Great?

Weta have said they're going digital for The Lonely Mountain, but they haven't said why. (I'd guess it's so they can control the environment exactly the way the want.)
