Woohoo! It's Fiesta Friday! Can't Post

The added Woohooo is because we get a three-day weekend here in the U.S. for 4th of July / Independence Day and, for once, I won't have to bring work home! Laugh

Gather 'round the bar, the pool, or grab a comfy chair and let us know what your weekend plans are (whether it's a 3-dayer or not), or how the past week treated you.

*kicks juke box* "God Bless the U.S.A." by Lee Greenwood starts to play.

p.s. For those interested, if you haven't been to the Decorah Eagles webcam site recently, the three eaglets are almost fully fledged and will leave the nest in the next week or so. Enjoy!

OhioHobbit and I have concluded . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

that for us Fridays come every three days!

We are in a warm-up right now, so a lemonade for OhioHobbit and a raspberry iced tea would go nicely! This has been a fairly dry week. We actually had to water yesterday!

I harvested a small batch of green and wax beans which were delicious! It is difficult to wait for things to ripen. I want veggies and I want them now only it doesnt work that way!

We had a bit of excitement this week. Then I spent a couple of days waiting for paint to dry. Our excitement was that our rural mailbox at the end of our driveway was vandalized on Sunday night about midnight. Someone drove past and smashed the side with a baseball bat. Needless to say, it didnt do the mailbox any good. The next morning OhioHobbit straightened it out as best he could and we went and bought a new mailbox. We like a decorated mailbox, so I paint on them. With the enamel acrylic paint, I had to let each color dry before putting the next one on; with two sides, it took all day on two days to finish it.

The mailbox we had before the one which was smashed was stolen. OhioHobbit had used a magnifying glass and burned a pretty design of vines and hummingbirds on it (it was wood slats). Someone must have decided he (or she) wanted it, so just took it.

We dont have any special plans for the 4th of July. We generally try to stay home when there are lots of people out and about. The county seat has a First Days (supposedly honoring the founding of the town in 1804) festival. The town and park will be full to overflowing with people. The fireworks will be on Monday night and there is never any place to park within a mile of the park well just stay home.

Well, I hope everyone has a great weekend and for U.S. sibs a great 4th of July weekend (a three-day weekend)! Have a great week next week.

Hello, folks! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been meaning to show up here for a few weeks now, but I kept on forgetting, and then showing up late! Anyway, I've been busy writing articles for the Trinity website, which has been an excellent job so far! I've been learning a whole lot, too.

My phone broke last week, which was kind of obnoxious, but I decided to take the opportunity to get an iPhone, which I've been eyeballing for a while, but I just kept balking whenever I actually had the opportunity to get one. I finally ordered it, and it came in the mail this morning, which ended up being pretty fortuitous because my laptop decided to break this morning (I was near tears at that point). So I've enjoyed most of the morning installing free apps. (now that I'm on TORn, I'm wondering if there's a Quenya app...I'd love that...*goes to check*)

Anyway, cheers, and I hope people are doing well! Happy three-day weekend! (which I just remembered this morning, which helped make me feel a little better about my broken laptop) Happy Friday!

More news than you can stand... [In reply to] Can't Post

This is the extremely 'scrubbed' version, but admins, please contact if it needs to be 'edited' further. We now return you to your regularly - or irregularly - scheduled Fiesta post...

<drops a dime in the jukebox to play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNKhIJfB510 and helps himself to a TALL rootbeer float with chocolate ice-cream, chocolate Cool Whip, and chocolate sprinkles!>

Dear friends,
This morning I had a status conference to have the judge rule on 2 separate contempt of court issues and to clarify when I was imputed at minimum wage since final orders didn't specify. Also ruled upon was a request to engage a therapist not on the CFI's list recommended to the court. The court opted to compel on the contempt issues, only ruling against me to have my attorney fees paid for not having followed the court orders in the first place.

I was also accused of perjury to the court, claiming that I was working with the military and earning a wage. The judge dismissed that saying (correctly) that it was addressed at final orders. If I understand the FSR lawyer correctly, the letter I got about four days ago saying that my driver's license IS suspended was a clever lie and when this paperwork wends through it will be as if nothing had ever happened to my license. I'm a bit peeved that they can lie like that but at this point I think I just need to pick my battles and keep my mouth shut.

It was tough not to feel at least a little smug as I left court and indeed most of the rest of the day. After what I'd been through all of last year and now half of this one, none of which I asked for or tried to incite, causing me to lose my house at a big loss and I didn't even get phone calls. I am repeating the mantra that the only loser here is my son and that is true and I'm focusing on that to NOT be smug about this - I need to make sure I remember that it's him that I need to work for and not to feel good for karma because none of that helps my son.

Speaking of work - or LACK thereof - On Tuesday I enrolled at my old school because they offer the degree I want - an MBA with a focus on the Environment and Social Sustainability (read "green technology") and I plan on taking a double courseload to try and fit not only the masters degree, but as much as I can of a doctorate in before my post-9/11 GI Bill runs out. I wanted to transfer that to my son, but as there is no way I can re-enlist for 6 more years I cannot transfer it so my next-best option is to get a doctorate, TRY to get a government job so that whatever student loans I get (plus the $32k of loans I have now) will be paid (working as a teacher OR for the Fed government will repay student loans for you), and when the time comes teach or get a position at a university so that even though I cannot give my son a CHOICE of colleges to attend that at least I could give him ONE choice should he choose to go to college.

I've worked up a budget to find out what I'll need to support us for 2 1/2 years (the length of the GI Bill) and then trust that I'll be able to continue to support us when the Bill runs out until the end of the doctorate. The numbers look decent as long as the financial aid comes through even close to as-expected. The University specialist estimates I'll be $4800/year short with the GI Bill and the projected living expenses would leave me about $4800/year short as well for a total shortfall of $14,400. Given the $32k in student loans for the Bachelor's if I took loans for the shortfall that would take my debt to $46,400 and leave me less than a year from a doctorate. As nearly as I can numbers-crunch this should be doable as long as the numbers come back as expected.

Theoretically both Masters and Doctorate are 3 years each. Masters at double-pace would be 1 1/2 years and because I've taken 2 masters-level courses for my bachelor's it would only be 1 1/4 years, giving me 1 1/4 years to do the doctorate. Further, my school allows 4 masters classes to count towards a doctorate so that would shave it to 2 years, leaving me with only 3/4 of a year gap - IF I can keep pace that long at that level of work! I've been out of work for 10 months now - the longest by far I've ever been unemployed - so something has to happen and this appears to be the best course both for us financially and for my being a full-time single dad.

My son appears to be not only adapting well, but getting the scars put behind him. He no longer freaks out every time I yell (which isn't often, but still...) and appears to be settling nicely into the routine of our lives. Tonight he treated me to something special - he sang and danced, all made up on-the-spot, in the style of old musicals, hip-hop, and classic love-song style (though he skipped the 'love' part). I truly hope he gets into the Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning that I've applied for at the most recent therapist's recommendation this Fall. The school is up the street from CTU (my college), literally, and the music teacher also teaches the kids theatre (right up my son's alley!) and he was trained at JULIARD in NYC! (For my international friends here, Juliard is considered among the finest if not THE finest music school in the U.S.). Right now he's #3 on the waiting list.

I want to try and move to either an apt or house or something in that part of town (west/middle as opposed to northeast where we are now) as that part of town is cheaper and I want to cut down on travel time as well as be close enough to really get into school with him. I can try to find someone to take over my lease for whatever time remains between whenever I move and February (when I moved in) or I can wait and start the school year for both of us here and try to move during the year (would rather move once I find out he is in the new school, but that might not be until Aug, meaning at best a move-date of Sep, and then it would depend upon finding a renter here. Oy!)

Went to my grandmother's 100th birthday celebration the start of this month and the trip was FUN! The boy and I canoed the Mohican River, just as his mother and I had done 10 years prior for grandma's 90th b-day, and went to the Lake Erie Islands just as she and I had done. I chose those deliberately so he would have common experience to share with his mother. He's now been to 12 states and the capitals of 9 of those 12. hehe!

Tomorrow I get to contact the school's "military benefits team" - yeah it's a private school that pre--err HELPS military get an edumucashun! That will be 1 part of the budget. Most of my bills I'm going to let go hang not because I don't owe or even don't want to pay, but I just have no choice. I can't get work at what I was earning in the military and as a student couldn't afford to try. I'm down to very little money, I have enough for July and that's it - at least until I get the tax money back, then I'll have enough to get through September and school starts Oct 2nd. Cutting it close as my money is gone as of paying rent today (thank goodness for food assistance!) and I'm now relying on getting my tax money to bridge the gap until school (and the military assistance that goes with it) kicks in October 2nd. Yikes!

Much love to all,
GAndyalf

I won't tell the Gaffer you're harvesting green beans. He's been hovering over his green bean plants, carefully watering and feeding, and nary a blossom do they have, let alone beans. He's given up on growing tomatoes -- the corner of the yard where his garden is just too hot for them. He does get some good hot peppers, though, which are no doubt acclimatized.

What a lovely mailbox! But the reason for your painting it is a shame. Some people!

Maybe he should try planting them in the shade. Mine do pretty well in just morning sun. I can't imagine tomatoes not doing well in heat. Mine don't do as well some years because it isn't hot enough! Same problem with peppers, though, I don't grow hot ones, just sweet peppers.

Happy Fiesta, Everyone!! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow! It's Friday AGAIN!? and JULY!!!??? This spring and now into summer have just flown right past my right ear! But I did LOVE going to the LotR Marathon for the past 3 Tuesday nights. Especially the RotK edition which I was able to moot with FantasyFan and her ever-incredible daughter!! *waves HOWDY* I'm going to trail off in a sec and do my mini-writeup on it.

I'm off to Mom's for the weekend to work on her basement window and grill some steaks! She's doing wonderfully well after her very hard illness and is living on her own again. 89yo amazing woman!

I hope everyone has a glorious weekend and that the USers have a chance to catch some fireworks. I think I'll grab a chocolate milkshake, Altaira! I feel reckless and wild today! :D

Cheers one and all! Stay safe!

It's Craft Show and Lobster Fest weekend! [In reply to] Can't Post

In our town, they set up a huge arts and crafts show all around the lawn of the Town Hall, and the local Lions Club serves boiled lobsters in the shell - it's always fun, cracking them to poke out the sweet meat and dipping it in melted butter! A true New England treat!

(If you don't want lobster, they do have barbecued chicken.)

Might I have a raspberry Iced Tea please, Altaira? And how's the weather been out your way? Will you be having fireworks? (Our fireworks are in two weeks, when they close down the main street for a massive all-town bazaar.)

I was bored... [In reply to] Can't Post

So I got on the Goodreads website and started "becoming a fan of" some of the authors on my book list. I haven't quite figured out what being a fan of an author means, because I haven't seen any posts or other activity related to these author pages. I don't even see a place to show me all the authors I've become a fan of.

In any case, I ran across an "author" page for Sir Derek Jacobi. He isn't really the author of anything, he's the audiobook narrator, so either there isn't a way to differentiate between author and narrator, or some Goodreads users weren't careful when they added the books to the site.

One of the books in his list, however, is Mr. Bliss by JRRT. I didn't know that he'd narrated anything by Tolkien. I'm fairly sure that it's not on audible.com, which is where I get my audiobooks. I'm positive I would have snapped it up, if it was there. Unless it was abridged, of course, but I don't recall even seeing it.

My weekend plans are pretty dull. Taking mom on her errands tomorrow, and probably having lunch or something with her on Monday for the holiday. Otherwise, just slouching around the house and running a few personal errands, as I usually do.

By the way, if anyone here is on Goodreads, I'd love to be your Goodreads friends! PM me with your Goodreads ID, or I can give you mine. Cool

I'm afraid I don't know a thing about Goodreads. I did get a Nook Color not too long ago and am still working my way through the collection of classics and the collection of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works that I downloaded. Good luck figuring it out, and have a great, long weekend! Smile

Thank you and No! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for your kind comments, but no I don't paint for commercial gain. I can't stand wondering if what I do is good enough for someone to pay money. I did try carving leather visors for sale, but didn't sell any. I did make a few wallets and purses which sold, but to friends.

I (heart) Canada... [In reply to] Can't Post

I love living the border -- gives you a healthy perspective on the fact that the world has lots of people in it, and not all of them think like you! We also have sizable Mohawk population here.. so we really have three cultures here, four, if you count the French influence. Much different than my Shire-ish childhood in the US Midwest. I've appreciated that the people here have helped me feel at home, and it has been a good place to raise kids -- they all seem to be turning out OK, anyway, so far!

Cheers, Lily and thanks for the good wishes!

What a week... [In reply to] Can't Post

Make it a nice cold Coke for me please :)

After nearly a year waiting, I found out yesterday that I got promoted... this was a huge deal for me. The saga to getting promoted in my job is pretty epic, including sitting exams, filling out 12 page self assessment forms, interviews... You'd swear I was applying for to be president of somewhere :)

But after months waiting - I got the good news yesterday. Considering how terrible the economy is here in Ireland, it's kinda like a mini miracle !!

On top of that my good lady friend finished up in college this week. She was really busy this last month, finishing up assignments, doing work placements and studying...

Over all it's been a good week and the sun is out here in Dublin so things are looking good for the weekend :)

I haven't played much with other people so, it's different but, I like it. Our options, as far as picking songs go, is great because there are two guitarists. I'll be playing the bass guitar.

Scots and Irish Gaelic are slightly different. Welsh is considerably different, and Manx is its own animal again!

The key to the Presidency is charisma - never let anyone tell you that any president has real power, though the President of the U.S. has some, it's nowhere near what is often touted in the media. -But that's another matter for another time!

It will, because I will not ALLOW it not to.

I've been gone for a while, but I've been slowly reappearing now and again. School's kept me busy-I have one year left until I graduate, then head off towards even more school *sigh* I'm interning at a local news station for the summer, so that's been fun. I got in all my hours for this past week in only two days because there was both a fire and a flood near by, so that was hectic and yet very eye-opening.

I'm not sure what my plans are for the weekend, but you can bet relaxing is a high priority :) Happy 4th to any fellow Americans!

to name a FEW! hehehe Zep is the GREATEST rock band EVER (and yes, given your comment about them and giving permission I know you at least slightly disagree w/me).
But everyone who appreciates them even a little should listen to Sandie Shaw's version of "Your Time is Gonna Come", the first-ever cover of a Zep tune about 8 months after Zep originally released it. Nice take and her voice is GREAT and the 12-string guitar accompaniment is both different and appropriate.

I hate to sound pretentious but here we go :)

To me it's hard to describe the awesomeness that is Stairway. I think it's more than just a song. It's so close to perfect as a song gets that i personally think its closer to a masterpiece that just a song. I mean I listen to it and I think - nothing comes close to that. I get the same feeling about bohemian rhapsody by queen. I think they are songs that are in some way separate to the bands that created them, they are just really special things...

Hi all! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Altaira for the webcam again. It was fun sitting up there in the breezes taking the view with those guys.

There is a couple of things to report. Mrs. sil's father has a tumor in his throat and they are still in process on how to deal with it. We are waiting for info which is slow coming. He is 87 and in his usual good spirits and alert mind. He has trouble swallowing but he getting by. He still gets out to use his scooter around the yard.

On a lighter note young sil got a haircut, finally. Only they took it all off the sides and left it on top in a strip. I said i only wanted to pay 2/3 of the price....No, just kidding, he wanted a mohawk for the summer so i let him have it. I also let him have it by saying stuff like:

"How!"
"You big brave. Have many scalps?
"You on war party?

All he can do is laugh and shake his head because it is a par/usual my goofing around like that.

We are trying to get in shape but the younger one is doing a better job of it. I squeak when i run and he doesn't.

One more thing: the wife gave me a warningShocked, no not that kind of warningMadLaugh. She said she got wind at work of a MUY MALO virus that comes in by email disguised as a postcard from Hallmark. A word to the wise.

Have a lovely longer(hopefully)weekend guys. You deserve it!

At that age ANYthing is serious so I hope all passes well!

My boy has had 'pseudo-mohawk' as a haircut before - the barber left about 3/8" or so on the sides and then shaped the top by gelling the tophair to the mohawk point.

I'd go all dork on anyone wanting a traditional mohawk by enforcing (if a child under my tutelage) that they learn the history of the Mohawk Nation before allowing them to get it.

Wow, that's a lot! [In reply to] Can't Post

I figured that since you hadn't been posting much lately, you must have had a lot going on.

Is it possible for you to skip finishing the Master's and go straight to the Doctorate studies? Some degrees let you do this, and some schools let you do this. I could have only done one more year of school and a dissertation to get a Ph.D. at my grad school instead of getting my Master's only, and I would have ended up just taking all of the same classes I took anyway plus several other ones. It may not be the case for you, but look into it if possible. It could shave off some time and money, and when you have a kid to support, that's a big deal.

Courts. Ugh. What a trial. Wink I'm glad things went as well as they did for you, and hopefully with everything else, you can get your ducks lined up in a row and finally move forward, or at least sideways. Maybe diagonally? Or Diagon Alley?

I'm glad to hear your son is doing okay. I'm sure it's been rough on him, all of these changes, court, everything. But it's great to know he has a wonderful opportunity with school!

Sending you lots of good vibes!

Hmm... let's see... [In reply to] Can't Post

Funny kid story! Today, little Ian wasn't napping. He does this sometimes. Almost every other day, he doesn't really nap, so he gets some quiet time. Only sometimes he's not so quiet. Today, he spend almost the whole time calling me. Sometimes at a little whisper... "charlene?" Sometimes yelling at the top of his lungs... "CHARLENE!!!!!" Sometimes in a coy, flirtatious, sing-song way, "oh, Char-leeeeeeeneee!" He mostly just does this to get attention. His parents want him to at least have some down time even if he doesn't nap, so I usually don't go to him unless it sounds important or if he's being so loud that he's disrupting his baby sister's nap or his mom's much needed rest after chemo. So, he kept calling me in any way he could think of, and suddenly, he burst out in song, putting my name in any song he could think of. I had to stifle my laughter because it was just so cute and funny. His mom heard it too, and she started cracking up. I swear, that kid is too clever for his own good!

I'm suffering various aches and pains this week. Good aches and pains. I'm working with a personal trainer and it's going well. The first half of the week my abs and my arms hurt. The second half of the week, my armpits have been hurting. Yup, my armpits. Well, okay, it's probably related to the pectoral muscles or thereabouts. But I never thought I'd ever hurt there! Leave it to me to be entertained by having pain in muscles I'm not used to using because it seems comedic to have pain in that particular area. At least it's that good pain where you know you're working something that needs to be worked and you haven't actually damaged anything. Another plus is that my trainer is impressed with me! Apparently, the assessment tests I had to do so he could get a sense of what my needs are show me to be a lot more ahead of the curve than most people who use a personal trainer for the first time. Either it's because I have some pretty good muscles under that post operation weight gain, or I'm just stubborn as a mule and don't give up easily. Or I just have a good attitude when it comes to knowing that some things just take work, and I'm willing to put in the time. I'm looking forward to fitting back into my old clothes again!

I'm typing this from my mom's computer, by the way. My new laptop was doing this weird thing where I'd be using it and the screen would suddenly go black, like it was going into screen saver mode. I brought it back to the store, and they just gave me a new one. I figure, sure, that's fair, because I hadn't even had that other new one for a full month yet and was already having problems. But now, I have to transfer all of my info from my old laptop to the new one, and that's going to take a couple of hours. I felt a little vindicated when I talked with the tech guy at the store. I mentioned that the experience of buying that new laptop was unpleasant because the guy I bought it from was being kinda rude and pushy, and the tech guy knew exactly who I was talking about. Apparently he has a reputation for that, so I'm glad to know it wasn't just him thinking he could pick on me specifically.

So, now I have a new new laptop. Yay, I think? CrazyCoolLaugh

Thank you kindly!

I rather doubt I can, since the masters is in a wholly different area than the bachelor's was (bachelor's in Information Systems Management, Masters and Doctorate in Environment and Social Sustainability) but ya never know until you ask!

The interesting thing I've learnt about courts is inertia is even more prevalent there than in Nature, which is why when awful things were filed about me first - didn't matter that not one whit was true - the courts went with that inertial force until slowly, ponderously, the evidence finally reversed that inertia entirely and now it's just as unstoppable in my favour as it was against me before. Not fair and even with it rolling my way I don't like it (from strictly the aspect of it being inertia and nothing to do w/what's "right") but that's my observation of "justice" in the U.S. I'm looking at a quantum leap forward and it should be possible but we will see.

Maybe you can answer this but probably not - why is it that ALL the women on the dating site I use that are massively compatible w/me live in the Bay Area? Most annoying, that! LIP

The hardest thing is he's gonna be in his 4th school and only entering 3rd grade if he goes where I hope and he's said as much that despite all the really cool stuff (he went with me to check this school out) that he wanted to stay where he knew people. Hard to knock anyone, kid or adult, for that! But the school is on the same street as my college and if I'm lucky enough to find a place to live in that area (UGH! ANOTHER move?! Waaaahhhh!) I should be VERY set for that phase of our lives. Not quite the Potter-o-phile for Diagon Alley (which I could never escape overlaying on Diagon Alley Portabello Road from "Bedknobs and Broomsticks")!

Have had no 'news' on your front in an age as well, hope all is spiffy w/you and yours?

Bookstores. [In reply to] Can't Post

I would say it's the bookstores. It seems that in the Bay Area, specifically in San Francisco, we have more bookstores per person than any other city in the US. I think the percentage of graduate educated people is a lot higher than the national average here too. So I'm guessing if you tend to like women who are more likely to be well read and more educated than average, it could be a little easier statistically to find them in the Bay Area (of course, despite the fact that there are plenty of wonderful, well read and educated women all over the place, as can be evidenced by the amazing women who post here). It can also be that the Bay Area is a place with a lot of computer savvy people, so that could explain part of it too. I remember when I moved to Raleigh, and I was shocked that people hardly seemed to make use of Craig's List, whereas everybody and their computer-clueless brother in the Bay Area knows it's a great way to find jobs and loads of other things.

Anyhoo, I'm doing well. I have a free trip to Hawaii coming up in August, so I have much to look forward to! Smile

Bookstores are GOOD! [In reply to] Can't Post

I wasn't really expecting an answer but it's as plausible as any since yes, intelligence and literary familiarity are very nice for me. Thank you for answering.

So you've about a month to go before your trip - how exciting! 38 states but no Hawai'i! Maaan! hehe

Drop down and give me 20! ....50 jumping jacks and stretch. Get in the pool and give me 20laps and concentrating on reaching on each stroke. Go out now and run 20 minutes easy and come back and stretch thinking on it as meditation. Get on the bicycle trainer witrh low resistance at 90rev/min for 20 minutes. Ok, pick a power bar and some gatorade and grab a banana too. Drink a full pint of water in the next 2 hrs too and again by 4hrs.

Wanna change trainers? Ha! No, you are doing great! You are experiencing the great bodily wakeup and it is in full swing rebuilding itself. Each workout is a controlled 'breakdown' of muscle fiber, tendon, ligaments, lung, heart- the whole cardiovascular system and bone. It is the only catalyst or platform to rebuild and strengthen each body system for greater performance. But it must always be measured against injury and also from doing too little. Patience, consistency and time does amazing things. I believe your trainer sees that you have the ability to embrace the right spirit to do just that. I am proud of you:)

Little Ian is an interesting little guy. A lot of energy that one day will be directed to do grand things.

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

A thought about your son and college. [In reply to] Can't Post

My kids both went to the community college where I teach, (and where they got free tution) and then my son went to the local state university, which I paid for by teaching summer school. They both lived at home throughout their college, and my son got a student bus pass to commute the 20 miles to college from home. No, they didn't get a choice of colleges, but it worked out fine. Both are working in their chosen fields now, and my son is already making a lot more money, with a bachelor's degree and five years' experience, than I am with a master's degree after 30 years. So this business of getting your kid into the "best" school is highly overrated, in my opinion. Also, neither one of them has any student loans to pay off, which puts them miles above their friends financially.

That's actually "the plan", Auntie... [In reply to] Can't Post

With the GI Bill and yellow ribbon programme he could have gone anywhere and that's always preferable when feasible. However, given that I can't give him that, the next-best thing is to work at a college and that way he'll at least have ONE choice that's free. And I SOO agree w/you on the student loans! I have $32k for my bachelor's and among the things I'm eyeing carefully is how much more to take out for the masters and partial doctorate so I'm not in debt forever. Also to help alleviate my student loans I plan on getting a government job, which will also facilitate our living overseas in 5 years.

I'm hoping to avoid them somehow with my daughter, although I have no idea how (teaching at a college is not an option for me . . .Unsure).

a state university is a good deal. I paid four years' tuition at CSU without taking out any loans. It was about $6,000 per year. By having my kids live at home, we saved a huge amount.

Like everything, it depends upon what they want to study... [In reply to] Can't Post

Every school, public and private, has areas that they're a) very good at and/or b) that other schools just don't have to offer at any price. The reason I'm going back to Colorado Tech instead of a cheaper school (CTU is pret-ty expensive!) is that they're the only place that offers both MBA and doctorate with the focus on Environment and Social Sustainability. As my son has been a strong recycling advocate all his life and it's been one of those things rolling round the back of my head thing for years to do something important that I'm passionate about that it came to the fore like a freight train - I want to get into green technologies and I see this as my means to do so.
Best of luck to Ethel with her daughter and thanks again, Auntie Dora for the kind encouragement and sage advice!

And sometimes what's available nearby bends the shape of a life. [In reply to] Can't Post

When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to be an astronomer. But I didn't want to leave home, and I would have had to go to Boulder to study astronomy. So I did math instead, and enjoyed it just fine.

My son wanted to go to a private school on the west coast and study video game design. I told him we couldn't afford it, that he'd have to apply for a scholarship or pay for it some other way. So he went to CSU instead, and is now programming satellites (as far as I can tell. He's not allowed to say much about what he does.) I think he enjoys that.

Yikes! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmm... not sure that kind of training would work for me. Especially because I'm not a fan of Gatorade, which tastes more like colors than flavors to me. Wink I think red tastes the best, but even then, it really just tastes like saline solution to me.

It's amazing, what a good workout can do. I made a point when I started to let the trainer know about past injuries and such, so we can work together to avoid re-injury. There's definitely a big difference between the pain that comes with using a muscle properly that you haven't used enough, and the bad pain. And a trainer definitely won't be able to help you know the difference if you don't say what's going on right away. My trainer has been able to help me because I've been good about that.

The thing that cracks me up about my trainer is he's pretty young. I keep having this desire to get him in a headlock and noogie him, then give him advice about girls... like I used to do with my younger brother.

If the author is on Goodreads, fans are notified of new releases, blog updates and (I think) events such as book signings. If the author *isn't* on Goodreads, I think the only effect is that the author's name is listed under the "favourite authors" section of your profile.

Funny you bring up Bohemian Rhapsody, since Conan O'Brien recently interviewed Liv Tyler... apparently, her son loves Queen, and she told a funny story about how she woke him up at night, and he rose out of bed singing, "Beezlebub has a devil put aside for me," then fell back to sleep.

I need to find that clip and post it somewhere here.

I generally don't drink myself. But my older brother's wife is from France, and she thinks it's weird that I don't drink. So sometimes, just so I don't get stared at oddly, I'll have a couple sips of wine when we have family dinners at their house.

The taste of alcohol just grosses me out, not to mention my family history of alcoholism. Strangely enough, it seems the British and Scottish sides of my family have more of a history of alcoholism than the Irish side. Hmm...

'course, the other option is a scholarship [In reply to] Can't Post

My sister & her husband had very little money to help the kids through college, but my nephew set his sights on Harvard when he was 14. He knew he'd have to do more than just get good grades, so he went out for crew and won a sizeable scholarship based on both academics and athletics. And here's the cool thing: if you get into Harvard, they bend way over backwards to make sure you have the money to go. He ended up with about six different grants, some big, some little. His folks had to pay about $3600/year and he had to earn at least that much every summer working, but he came out without any loans to pay off.

My cousin's daughter won a four-year free ride to Smith ($80k/year tuition!) the same way, by excelling both academically and at a sport. Her younger sister also got into a good four-year school on an athletic scholarship.

So don't tell your kid he can't go to a top school. If he REALLY wants to, he could make that happen.

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.

Except to do the things that he can do and when 'the way' seems blocked to look for another way - NEVER to give up. It took me nine tries at college and 29 years after HS graduation, but I got my Bachelor's. It's taken a divorce and some terrible things to get me back into school for my MBA but I'm here. The only times a person is beaten are when they ALLOW themselves to be or are dead.
The nice thing about Hahvahd and Smith is they're essentially very well-connected fraternities - once you're in you're pretty well set for life from the very affluent connexions that going to such schools provides. The cost of going there is so drastically offset by those connexions and opportunities that it's actually a basement-bargain to go there.
All that said, I'm the poster-boy for the Pennsylvania Deutsch expression, "A man grows too soon old, and too late smart!"
