We get our first look at Bilbo (with some dwarves in the background), Gandalf, and a behind the scenes shot with Peter Jackson and Martin Freeman). Hurrah! http://www.ew.com/.../0,,20504849,00.html

Where's that flailing Kermit .gif when you need it? Freeman looks great as Bilbo, but I have to be honest—he's so perfect for the role that it's really just seeing your expectations fulfilled. I'm a bit more interested in the dwarves; I'm having trouble picking out specific actors, but I think Thorin's going to have dark hair… can't wait to see this in better quality once the magazine hits tomorrow! (I'll probably have to pick it up, heh.)

Gandalf is just like out of FOTR, which is as it should be. Shame we don't get a better look at the dwarves.

Gandalf the Grey! How I've missed you! And... and.... and.... BILBO! Martin you're so perfect its not even fun! Oh and I see Thorin! The Dwarves look nice and all Dwarvish, not too pretty at all. :)
Plus, I think we should have buried Tolkien in a larger coffin, he probably cant turn very well in his. -Rossmonster

Is it bad I'm more exicted about Gandalf than Bilbo?

As is already said, Bilbo looks pretty much as we knew he would look, and it's nice to see him and all. BUT DAMN, the last time we saw Gandalf the Grey was when he dropped off the Bridge of Khazad-dum and the White edition just wasn't quite the same. I'm suprised we got this much already. The Dwarves, from the little we can see, look absolutely perfect. These images made me trust PJ even more.

PJ mentions in the caption to the first photo that Bilbo has the biggest hobbit feet so far. And in photo 3 you can see what he means - large and exceptionally furry, it looks like to me...
They went in, and Sam shut the door. But even as he did so, he heard suddenly, deep and unstilled, the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth. From the unpublished Epilogue to the Lord of the Rings

And it's still very Richard Armitage i'm afraid . I know it's not a close-up but while the costume is lovely, the hair and make-up just looks like Richard Armitage done up as Cal Drogo from Game of Thrones- it's his eyes, it's his nose and the beard is rather close fitting rather than sprawling but well maintained and controlled. And not a hint of grey i may add. He also appears to be sporting dreadlocks (judging particularly by the exposed ear), but it may prove otherwise. I mean he doesn't look entirely un-dwarfy, but that ain't Thorin as i know him. Judging by the pictures and PJ's comments on Bilbo though it looks like they've slightly over-cooked the prosthetics- those ears and feet are enormous, and the costume isn't exactly that of a respectable hobbit- looks a bit boyish and scruffy- no jacket or even a waistcoat, practically collarless and all very drab. Don't get me wrong, i'm glad to see these pictures and they make me excited, but not wholly in the right direction.... Dr Death

Bilbo looks perfect but Thorin looks like a mixture of Khal Drogo and Jack Sparrow. He should also look older.

Finally! Freeman looks awesome! That dwarf on the end of the table almost looks like one of the Umbar pirates, and a bald dwarf?
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

With all the worry and controversy we have here over these films sometimes, it's nice to get an awesome picture to remind us just what we're waiting for.
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

... both the Bilbo and Gandalf and the interior of Bag End. Not sure how anyone thinks they know which dwarf is which from that picture, still, whichever they are I reckon what I can see looks pretty good. Enough like Gimli to be recognisably from the same world, yet distinct enough to be recognisable individuals. It's really happening!

WOW! This is right out of left field and no mistake. Who ever expected to see so much this early in the production? I am thoroughly excited about Gandalf the Grey, but mildly concerned about the look of Bilbo and the Dwarves (or rather Thorin, as he's the only one I can see with any bit of clarity). Bilbo's ears and feet look tremendous and his clothes look a wee bit shabby given his prim and proper pre-adventure lifestyle; and Thorin looks decades younger than I'd always imagined in my head. But hey! I'm not cribbing. I can live with all these personal little nigglings... PJ's always had my vote,my trust, and I'm just so glad all's coming along so well

The significance of the dwarf in the centre, his placement relative to the table (remember also the seating plan we heard PJ going through in the production video) and the striking resemblance to the person playing Thorin does seem to suggest that it is indeed he. I'd also take a slightly less certain prediction that the white-haired dwarf towards the back is Balin, although he might not be the only dwarf with white hair so i can't be sure. Dr Death

I always imagined Bilbo in more of a green waistcoat and trousers with a yellow shirt for some reason, but I like the casual way he's dressed here, and it will be interesting to see how he looks when he's out and about on his adventures. I pictured him with reddish-brown hair, and this isn't too far off. I don't seem to recall Bilbo reading a scroll in the book – have I forgotten something? Does anyone know what that's about? Thorin looks far too young for my liking; I'd been hoping they'd use make-up to compensate for his age, and that they'd cast him for reasons of fitness rather than looks, but his youthful appearance here puts a bit of a damper on that theory. I hope the other Dwarves are more Dwarvish.
