with a hand knit GranPatty afghan. One feels an obligation after the first one, you know, even if you don't really want to pick up the needles again. And even though one has app. 9 months to get it done in, I soooo wait till the last minute, and then it is a pressure. Crazy

I just hope I won't be knitting any more of THOSE.

But that Gollum afghan EPW posted a few days ago looked interesting.Sly

100% agree [In reply to] Can't Post

While we never got confirmation that this role even exists, if it does and they don't have Ronan, then its safe to assume that it could be cast with someone else.

I like Soairse, think she might be a bit young to be playing someones love interest but she'd have played a perfect elf.

Time will tell, who knows what Peter and co will do.

I really do not buy the love interest angle as a focus of the roll. [In reply to] Can't Post

If my hunch is correct the function of Itaril (or what ever the character is named in the movies) will be as facilitator for the Dwarves escape from their imprisonment in the Woodland Realm. I also see the character playing a role in The Battle of Five Armies as a connecting point between the two movies and as a identifiable face in the crowd. If the character is to appear in both of these segments it will require an extended obligation to the filming. I would say that Ms Ronan's conflict would lie with the later sequences as they would be more likely to conflict with other work.

That I buy into the love story element either, all the endless speculation comes from a tiny article in a casting call. And I've heard of many occasions where the casting call info is only used a gauge of the actor and not always a plot point or whatever...

How do you know that the new actress, if there is to be one, will do a worse job with the role than Ms. Ronan?

Interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

Does this mean that some (or most) of the White Council material will be placed in the second film? The two films will need to be shot in roughly chronological order so as to have enough time to complete the first one by its release date. I'm surprised that they won't be filming the White Council scenes during Martin Freeman's break, which was the general assumption around here... perhaps there will be more non-Bilbo material than we expected? Or perhaps Freeman will be needed for the White Council scenes. Evil

We don't know that... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and I think it's very unlikely. If they have written in a character named Itaril (something else we don't know) then the leaked casting call must have been genuine, at least in part, and that means that the character was created way back, when Guillermo was directing and writing. That makes it unlikely, to my mind, for two reasons...

Why would Guillermo particularly want Saoirse Ronan in the film?

If he did, and the part was written for her, why put out a casting call? Seems a waste of time calling for other actresses when you know you're not going to cast them.

Anyway, we don't know for sure she's not in the film, she only said 'probably'. And if she isn't, and the part she might have played, whatever it is, serves some worthwhile purpose in the story, there will be scores of other actresses who can play it. It might be a really lucky break for someone.

Bilbo doesn't need elfie sue to help him. He can save dwarfs on his own. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't buy any arguments that the story can't work without her and romantic stuff.
That's most likely the main reason for adding her into this movie-romance and girl power(a girl with sword and bow chosen to be warrior and guard but fighting with her feelings for elf lord). Sounds like some story from fanfiction net. Not very original.
Btw did Tolkien mention somewhere that woodelf king's guards were supposed to never to fall in love and get married? I don't think so. Too odd idea IMO.

That's fair [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll take your meaning to have been "an actress less suitable to me." No one could argue with that.

The initial phrasing of the comment reminded me of all too many fan-driven raves about how this actor or that one is the only one who could have played ... Frodo, Gollum, Aragorn, Lurtz, Bill the Pony, etc. etc.

I thought the casting of the LotR films was excellent, but I just can't concede, without access to alternate universes, that the casting was uniquely successful - i.e., that all other actors in any given role would necessarily have delivered a performance inferior to what we saw on our screens. I feel the same way about The Hobbit. I am excited to see what looks like good casting choices, but I doubt these actors are inherently the best for their roles out of the worldwide talent pool of film and stage performers.

UK Series vs. US Season [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To

Um, no. The first series was only three episodes, and I believe the second series will have only three as well.

What you need to understand is that a UK series is smaller, and usually much smaller, than an American season. Very few shows have even as many as sixteen episodes, and half that number is by no means all unusual.
