"however it never hurts to question or speculate on what ifs..." [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally, I think I would find having baseless and nasty rumors spread about me on the internet to be very hurtful. I don't know why that suddenly changes just because the person in question chose a high profile career.

I wasn't suggesting tabloid type what ifs [In reply to] Can't Post

it is interesting to speculate sometimes on things that do have some basis, and not to spread as rumor or gossip, but to question and discuss the possibilities respectfully, and it doesn't need to become nasty.

If getting busted for drugs twice isn't grounds for being let go, I'm not sure why juvenile shenanigans like these would be.

The trouble here -- [In reply to] Can't Post

Because of LOTR's success and the way being connected to it and future related productions came to be viewed, the sense of what a huge loss having to leave TH would be is immediate and profound. Townsend likely had no idea what he was leaving behind... at the time sticking to his guns must have seemed more important than anything he thought he would get out of starring in LOTR. TH is viewed in a completely different way by all concerned (it may yet prove to be otherwise, but for now TH is a sure thing). To an actor, losing a role in TH has greater potential to be personally devastating (in every sense of the word) than leaving LOTR might have had.

In other words, because of what RK has lost, any speculation at all, at least for the time being, could be viewed as being nasty... not least because RK is a real person who was (and may continue to be) important to our community.

Well, we don't know what's going on with Mikael either way... [In reply to] Can't Post

And remember Stewart Townsend was let go, and he was playing a lead character.

In any case, let's just hope they find someone to play Fili soon, as they're bound to need the Dwarves in the near future, I image.

PS -- the wording of PJ, mentioning they haven't shot "much of Fili's storyline yet", inferring that Fili will have his own distinct story within the films and will not just be a "background Dwarf", further confirms if there was any doubt that Fili and Kili will be major characters in Thorin & Co.

I would rather be watching Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" and Ridley Scott's "Prometheus"...it's going to be a long few years.

What I hope [In reply to] Can't Post

is that later in the shoot, when Rob's health is hopefully back up to par, he can come back for a small role or a background part, just so that he is somewhere in the film. I'm sure it'd be bittersweet for him but at least he'd always be associated with The Hobbit in a small way (other than 'that Dwarf who left at the start of filming').

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I hear what you are saying, and understand the breadth of this [In reply to] Can't Post

At the same time, I still think it is possible to speculate in a respectful way without being nasty...the problem is how some may misinterpret or mistakenly view it as being nasty, when it was not intended to be...

When you say "...RK is a real person who was (and may continue to be) important to our community."
Are you saying he was here on ToRN as a regular poster? (I think I'm not interpreting correctly what you mean by 'our community', and would be good to get clarification, as I don't want to misinterpret what you meant...I know full well what it's like to be caught in the cross-hairs of misinterpretation !?
