A Hint Where the "Break" will Be? [In reply to] Can't Post

If these are indeed the titles that are to be used, they give a hint as to where the first movie may end, and the second begins. Assuming the first movie will be An (or The) Unexpected Journey, and movie two will be There and Back Again, it seems reasonable that the first movie will end before the company arrives at The Lonely Mountain (There).

hm.. [In reply to] Can't Post

"is it the best title to sell the movie to worldwide audiences?"

Well, what's wrong with it? :) It seems fine to me-it's not dry and boring, it sounds pretty intriguing. In any case non-fans might be drawn to the movie, and others will not. You can't please everyone. Tongue People shall complain no matter what.
That being said I am currently making my mother read The Hobbit so she'll know what happens when the movies comes out. Who knows how many other people will read the book by the time the actual movies comes out. XD

I'm going to go ahead and assume [In reply to] Can't Post

An Unexpected Journey = Part I.
There and Back Again = Part II.

"There" refers to Bilbo arriving at the Lonely Mountain, which will undoubtedly happen in the second film. And "Back Again" refers to Bilbo returning to The Shire, which will also undoubtedly happen in the second film.

It's pretty obvious to me which title is meant for which film. I would be utterly shocked/disappointed if it were the other way around.

Speaking of movies titles getting shortened [In reply to] Can't Post

on screening boards, they also get shortened on ticket stubs. All my LOTR stubs said "Lord of the" on them. I wonder if they will fit "The Hobbit" on them, or if I can expect to be amused by "The Hob" or "The Hobbi" or some other odd variation? Laugh

They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

OH YEAH! If they're flipped around... I think they're AWESOME! So familiar, so authentic, so what I wanted them to be in terms of tone and expression. THANK YOU Mr. Underbelly!!! *fans face* After YEARS of wondering about whether or not The Hobbit would ever be made, to waiting for the word to GO, to having them blow up into TWO films *twitch* to finally casting and now (possible) titles... I'm so happy I could spit!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Excellent [In reply to] Can't Post

I was a bit worried about the possibility of taking chapter titles and how that may limit the applicability of the titles, but this I like

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

"An" is better than "the" because it preserves Tolkein's language. More than that, it sounds much more poetic. I mean "The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey" somehow sounds like some sort of spinoff series or something. It seems too limited in its scope. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" places us in a world in which the story is but a small part of the fabric of the universe.

Ooohh! Film titles! Film titles! [In reply to] Can't Post

This reminds me of the wild, insane speculation and discussion of the titles of the Star Wars prequels when they debuted. I was a regular on The Force.net and Jedinet in those days. WOW--the epic discussionsLaugh.

I add to the chorus of "Flip them around and they're perfect." It continues the tradition the Team and Mr. Shore had of borrowing chapter titles for song titles, bits of script, score cues, etc. And "An" of course. Does anyone get the idea that TPTB are "field-testing" this stuff with fans on sites like this to get feedback, before it goes "official"? WOuld be a nice thought.

And does anyone else get the idea that in the days to come, expect other major "bombshells" to hot the wires, like announcements of other cast members, all carefully planned to distract us from sussing out details, throwing off Spies, etc, as the final prearations are made for the cameras to finally roll?WinkSlySly

Some things are inherently too dreary... [In reply to] Can't Post

... like Part I and Part II. These titles (which are obviously going to be flipped around) are very "Red Bookish", so to speak, and already elevate these movies from being perceived as mere prequel/sequels to the Lord of the Rings. I'm impressed!

On the topic of "The Unexpected Journey" versus "An Unexpected Journey", my inclination is towards "An Unexpected Journey". "The..." is way too much of a cliche, especially for a made-up title. I prefer "An...", which is a rather unexpected title in itself!

Either way... very cool! Cool

An vs. The [In reply to] Can't Post

I prefer "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" because the other one has the word "The" only two words apart, sounding unnecessarily repetitive.

Good Titles... [In reply to] Can't Post

Most people have said it by now - the titles makes sense if the unexpected party is attached to the first movie - the article doesn't suggest which title goes with what movie...

i like them, i liked the idea of "there and back again" being used...

Surely it would have been better as "There and Beck" ?

It should definitely be "An".

For a really long film title, the complete title for 1999's "The Talented Mr Ripley" is "The Mysterious Yearning Secretive Sad Lonely Troubled Confused Loving Musical Gifted Intelligent Beautiful Tender Sensitive Haunted Passionate Talented Mr. Ripley."

Love the titles [In reply to] Can't Post

Definitely:
1. AN Unexpected Journey
2. There and Back Again.

The only problem with the latter title is the fact that it kind of gives away the ending (although that was true of Return of the King as well). It's not as much of a problem since so many have seen LOTR and know Bilbo does, in fact, make it back again, but for those who are entering this world for the first time might perhaps feel a bit spoiled.
