How would you cast The Hobbit?

Let's all pretend that The Hobbit movie is finally going to be made and that PJ would be directing and
Howard Shore once again providing the music. Since our two main characters (or at least Bilbo) would have to appear
younger and the actors are definitely older, whom would you cast in the movie?
Would you like to see former LOTR actors play other roles in The Hobbit?

I would write Bilbo in as much older character so Ian Holm can play him. I am sure he would do a marvelous job. I would include as many originals as possible, even if just cameo., Like Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond, Galadriel, etc. I don't follow films much and can't give any new suggestions for Thorin, etc. I am sentimentally partial to a computer generated three stooges as trolls. But I think we cross some ethical barrier there. If you taught a computer to poke eyes and conk heads would it at some point think it is Moe?

Assuming none of the LOTR actors are an option, I would venture to propose this roster (I've focused mostly on British/Australian actors because of the accents):
- Bilbo - Colin Firth (another TORNsib suggested this a couple of months ago, and I agree that he would be excellent for the role)
- Gandalf - Jim Broadbent, Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, or Michael Caine (although it's difficult to imagine anyone else in this role other than Ian McKellan - Jim and John are my top two choices)
- Thorin Oakenshield - Russell Crowe
- The Trolls - Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short - how can anyone disagree with that? Very funny idea
- The Great Goblin - would there be too much makeup and prosthetics to even recognize anyone?
- Beorn - Ray Winstone (he's rough and tumble, but I'm sure he can be kind and warm, too)
- King Thranduil - Terrance Stamp (he can do nobility as good as anyone), or Kenneth Branagh
- Bard the Bowman - Ralph Fiennes, or Clive Owen
What do you guys think of these suggestions? Not that it matters, of course; it's just for fun...

In fact, that’s exactly why he shouldn’t play Bilbo. Bilbo is a dumpy, short, middle-aged guy. I don’t want to lust after him, I want him to be slightly absurd. (I wasn't sure if you were being ironic or not, the Internet not being a good conductor of sarcasm; but I thought I'd offer a rebuttal, just in case.)

I actually wasn't being ironic. Being a guy, I never considered the attractiveness of the actors in my list. I guess Colin is a handsome guy, so I can see your point. But would you still feel attracted to him once he has a wig of curly, messy hair, pointy ears, and hairy feet? I know he usually plays a very proper, civilized character, but I can picture him being slightly absurd, as you say. Did you see the scene in Bridget Jones 2 where he fights with Hugh Grant? Very absurd and absolutely hilarious. Once I picture him with a few more pounds and a rounder belly, I can imagine him in the role. Maybe my imagination is too much today. But nonetheless, I see your point and I appreciate it. I don't like it when Hollywood gets gorgeous actresses to play characters that aren't supposed to be gorgeous (or don't have to be for the story).

in that part, with, as you say, wildly messy hair (and his own hair is naturally curly anyway). I think he would get a great kick out of playing Bilbo. He strikes me as someone with a great sense of humour. If you saw Nanny MacPhee, he was pretty funny, while trying to be serious -- which is how I would expect Bilbo to be!

Following along the lines of Princess Bride:
Ian Holm's Bilbo is telling the story of his adventure to the Lonely Mountain to a group of children much like he did at the party. Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Sam and anyone else we want to throw into the mix are listening.
If we wanted Elijah's Frodo in as Bilbo (which I know we don't; but just for discussion's sake), we can think back at when he was in Rivendell with Bilbo looking at the Red Book and he tells how he used to pretend he was off with Bilbo on one of his adventures. Frodo could be listening to Bilbo's story (for the umpteenth time) and could do a fade to imagining himself as Bilbo.
Anyway...

Gandalf : Ian McKellen
Thorin Oakenshield :

Is an amazing actor and he would suit the part of Thorin very well indeed.If it were not for him and Peter O Toole Troy would have been a complete disaster.Brendan has a very similir phyisque to John Rhy Davies.

I'll throw in my vote for Martin Freeman, as well.
His work on The Office shows that he can handle heavier emotional stuff if the need arises...though his slightly befuddled, ironic style might not jell with Ian Holm's take on the character.

it was my one complaint, well, major complaint of the LotR films--why oh why did they need to double JRD's voice for Treebeard? He was wonderful as Gimli (except the drinking party), but I knew his voice instantly as Treebeard. PJ should have used someone else. And yes, Brian Blessed would have been a good choice, if his voice is as strong as it used to be. He's pretty old now.

Wonder if Brian Sibley could be tapped for someone, perhaps the mayor of LakeTown. I don't know if he is a good visual actor, but he did very well on the audio of Farmer Giles of Ham.

No disrespect was intended by suggesting you would make a wonderful Bilbo Baggins; I for one do not think you look like a goblin. I think you would be a fantastic edition to the already long line of brilliant actors who have visited Tolkien's Middle Earth, and a perfect successor (precursor?) to Sir Ian Holm.

One actor I've rediscovered that would be perfect for the part would be Sylvester McCoy. He played Doctor Who #7, and did a great job. He even looks about the same today that Ian Holm looked back in 1999 when they were shooting the LOTR films. Granted, he's in his 60's, but give him a dark wig and some makeup, and he'd be perfect! After all, Bilbo was already in his 50s when he found the ring, so it's not that big of an age difference. Look him up on IMDB.com and see what I mean!

It goes without saying that for Gandalf we need Sir Ian McKellen.
The problem arises with Bilbo.
I'd like to see Ian Holm, but if that's not possible, here are three solutions:
1-Find an actor who looks like an exact copy of a young Ian Holm, and then
a) call Holm to dub this guy
b) reshoot the scene in LOTR when Bilbo finds the Ring with this guy, leaving the voice of Holm.
2-use the performance capture (we need Holm to do the voice over) and create a perfect replica of the young Ian Holm we see at the beginning of LOTR.
3-Do a Princess Bride approach where they have our Ian Holm Bilbo telling the story to a group of little hobbits ) I say five to ten years before the 111th birthday of Bilbo) gathered on the floor or chairs around him (like at his party). We could have Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and maybe some others listening in with knowing smiles on their faces. Now, remember in Rivendell when Frodo told Bilbo he used to pretend he was off with him on one of his adventures? This would be a way for Elijah Wood to play both Frodo and Bilbo as he imagines himself on the adventure. (Thanks to grammaboodawg for this clever idea)
PLEASE, do not replace Ian Holm with another actor and pretend he is Bilbo... it would be just wrong.
And, most important, it would be painful for all the fans who have loved so much the trilogy, me included.
These solutions are not impossible to realize! They can be done. Please, don't ruin the whole movie with an easy solution.
As for the other actors... I leave this to PJ and Co. They already did a perfect job in LOTR, they know how to choose.

I don't understand this discussion. Bilbo did not age from the time that he found the Ring (this was an effect of the Ring). The prologue of the 'Fellowship' film shows Ian Holm, playing Bilbo, finding the Ring. This is accurate. He would have looked the same! No recasting necessary! Don't fix it if it ain't broke! I can't imagine anyone other than Ian playing Bilbo!

I've had one guy in mind for Bilbo for a while now, he's perfect, and it's Martin Freeman. He played the Jim character in the original british "the Office" and starred in Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy.
Nobody could be better. Average guy, with perfect comic timing, thrust into an impossible situation. He was born to play the role.
