Sylvester McCoy confirms his role as Radagast at Armageddon Panel in Auckland... Can't Post

Over at WETA's Shadow and Flame forums, there's a poster who was present at Armageddon who says...

"Sylvester McCoy confirmed at his Armageddon Panel today that he has been offered the part of Radagast the Brown."

For those who don't know what Armageddon is, read more here.

I suppose it's just a matter of waiting for an official announcement now Cool

Great news [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he will make an excellent Radagast.

I guess Warners are holding back on confirming more of the cast to get maximum press coverage by staggering the press releases.

...even if we kind of knew about it already, it's nice to have confirmation. I wonder why he was omitted from the press release? And can we now say that the White Council/Necromancer scenes are definitely in the script?

So, assuming that the casting breakdown was accurate... [In reply to] Can't Post

Can we assume that the main cast of the "Quest for the Lonely Mountain" storyline will be:

Bilbo
Thorin
Gandalf
Fili
Kili
Gloin
Balin/Dwalin/Bombur

And the cast of the "Necromancer/White Council" storyline will be:

Gandalf
Radagast
Drogo
Primula
Itrail
Young Elf Lord

With Elrond, Galadrial, and hopefully Saruman and Celeborn on the White Council?

BTW, has anyone involved with the production ever mentioned bringing Marton Csokas back? Haven't heard anything...Crazy

Samuel L. Jackson for Bilbo, Woody Allen for Thorin, Lewis Black for Bard and Gilbert Gottfried for Smaug!

But they were announced as "leads", so I'm assuming they're introduced along with Bilbo in the Shire, then get caught up in the storyline concerning the investigation of the Necromancer and subsequent assembling of the White Council?

Elves and the White Council [In reply to] Can't Post

Young elf lords who might be involved could be Elrohir and Elladan? They have ample reason. I am not conviced by this Itaril thing though, it seems like they would have to spend a lot of time developing a character with little to no relation to the main story line.

Those of us who have read the books will know that around the time of the Council of Elrond they were out scouting about for the Nazgul and Orcs (if not exactly then, then shortly thereafter). Their storyline wasn't necessary for LotR, but as with Radagast, I hope the filmmakers take advantage of the opportunity to have them be at home when Bilbo and Co. arrive--just as I hope they take advantage of the opportunity to have Legolas be at home with his Dad when the dwarves and Bilbo get to Thranduil's halls. Let's keep our fingers crossed, Flagg. (If not, we'll have to be content to see them in the fanfilms Born of Hope and here

I still think she's more likely a little sister than love interest [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, the actress is still rather young, and her youth is fairly obvious; in the film-verse it's much easier to tell old elves from younger elves, and considering that we know nothing about Legolas' family other than his father and grandfather, it wouldn't be so much a canon breach as filling in the gaps.

The Fool [In reply to] Can't Post

It's interesting that he first met Jackson whilst playing the Fool in King Lear opposite Ian McKellen, I wonder if this might be an indication of how Radagast might be portrayed, a wild almost simpleton.

Isn't there a line in maybe The Unfinished Tales implying that Saruman and Radagast both failed in their mission, Saruman because was corrupted by his desire to create, Radagast because he lost focus and forgot what he was supposed to be doing.

Saruman starts shouting about 'Radagast the Fool! Radagast the Simple! Radagast Bird-tamer!' when Gandalf mentions Radagast to Saruman during their conversation in Orthanc in FotR (book). So there is some strange sort of correlation there.

I hope not. [In reply to] Can't Post

Why taint the films with a permanent reminder of something that ought never have happened? Fortunately, I don't think that sort of petty revenge is PJ's style.

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Lost Radagast [In reply to] Can't Post

If the Istari Radagast is introduced to the story in these two films, I have a strong suspicion he will not make it out alive. In other words, I think it will be a tidier story if he dies rather than wanders off and goes native never to be mentioned in PJ:LOTR. A likely victim in service to foreshadow of Saruman's LOTR betrayal.

Alternatively... [In reply to] Can't Post

...they could show Radagast with lots of moths flying around him and nestling in his hands and such. Then in the scene where the eagles rescue the travellers from the wargs, a moth could appear heralding the arrival of the eagles, the implication being that the eagles were sent by Radagast. Hopefully this would add new meaning to the scene where Gandalf is rescued from Orthanc in FotR, implying that Radagast is still around and helping from behind the scenes.

Only this week found out that Elladan and Elrohir were in the first draft for LotR, but sadly were written out when it got revised Frown
While they weren't really in Imladris during the Council, I was quite disappointed that they never went to Rohan with the Rangers and instead the Elven army turned up. Oh well, on second thought - better they killed Haldir than my two favourite Peredhil! But I hope they will make up for the omission in LotR and include them somehow in TH. It doesn't need to be a huge part, but I want to see them!

Killing Radagast is a real possibility, [In reply to] Can't Post

though I hope they don't go with it. Saruman may have had something to do with the Blue Wizards' disappearance... and if his treachery is brewing even at this early stage, he might just bump off Radagast too. Or he could die facing the Necromancer. And Jackson has already killed off Haldir for dramatic reasons, so it wouldn't be too surprising for him to kill more characters for the same purpose.
