Looks like clean up is going ahead [In reply to] Can't Post

Good to see they are already cleaning up and making progress with it.
All those tumbled down bookcases look so sad, and that will be a lot of work, getting them upright and filled again.

How is the situation at home? Is it calming down a bit?

Be prepared to be jumpy for a while when you hear noises. I've been close to a gas explosion and it took a while before I didn't jump when a loud noise close to me occurred.

All the best!

I just wanted to say that you're all still very much on my mind. [In reply to] Can't Post

My brother lived through the big quake in Istanbul in which 10,000 people died, and I remember how long it took for life to get back to normal for so many people. I'm guessing our NZ sibs are having some long hard days right now. As others have said, I feel helpless, but I hope it helps a little bit to know how much your TORnsibs love you all.

Well, I hope things begin to ease now [In reply to] Can't Post

So you can all get back to some form of "normality". Poor Sammy's nerves must be shot!

We are both doing well, it will be six months since our wedding next week, I can't believe quite how quickly this year is passing.

Hopefully life will quieten down for you after all of this!

Christchurch quake map. [In reply to] Can't Post

An interestnig way to view the original earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks: http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

That is an awesome video. [In reply to] Can't Post

Well-constructed - and frightening: one can almost feel the earthquakes.

A couple of times I had the impression of watching a shooting-gallery...Unsure

How horrifyingly interminable this must have seemed! [In reply to] Can't Post

I can hardly imagine how it must have been, going on and on and on like that. What do they think about the chance for future quakes--is it one of those California-type situations, where it's not so much if, but when? Unsure

Fascinating. [In reply to] Can't Post

I was interested in the number of events outside the main area of activity (a few to the northwest, several near the end of the peninsula). Have the geologists produced a map of the faults they think were active yet? I gather there were some they didn't know about.

Scientists think the fault last fractured [In reply to] Can't Post

around 16,000 years ago. Talk about losing out on the odds.

I saw an aerial photo in our newspaper (and I can't for the life of me find it online) of a field with a visible deformation across the surface. The farmer had marked out his field with the words: "No fault line? Yeah right."

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Stop lying, Starling!!! Just kidding. [In reply to] Can't Post

Today there was another big aftershock at 7am & then two more at 1pm which woke me from an awesome dream where I was fighting Dr Evil at his moon base.

I've fastened my big bookcase to the wall so it can't fall down on me again. What a strange week it's been - & we now have some new rivers that have appeared out of no where.

Keep fighting the universe, Starling.

Is it still, still going on? :/ The media seems to have dropped the story here [In reply to] Can't Post

and I'm hoping that the aftershocks have lessened. Any word on your house? Are your pets coping better? I don't think my dog would ever get over it--she runs and hides at distant thunderstorms none of us humans can hear or see until up to an hour later!Unsure

Do keep us posted if you have the time/energy--maybe an update thread when things finally quit rocking around?SmileSmile

Still rockin' [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your kind words. I guess the reason the media around the world have dropped the story is because there were no deaths.

And yes, the aftershocks continue....

I certainly won't say "rock on." Are they pretty much the same magnitude, [In reply to] Can't Post

as it appears from your link, or is there any tapering off? Hope you are eating a bit more now.Smile

I might sing "La Cucaracha" for you . . . (I'm rather dense sometimes--do you mean the tremors and cracks in the buildings are forcing out the awful things? If so, I'm impressed with your altruism. I'd be more likely to build little prisons.Wink)

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yep, still in Nelson and all fine :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

I live well away from any damaging effects of the quake, although we did feel it. The rocking/shaking woke us up, but it wasn't enough to get us out of bed.

My sister in ChCh is not so lucky: 80-yr old house has cracks and a damaged chimney that may need to come down; horrible motion sickness from the aftershocks, although that's settling down a lot in last few days; and the historic building where she works as a guide is severely damaged and closed till further notice so work is pretty uncertain. Even from this distance it's been an intense 10 days, providing lots of phone support for her, and living thorough the experience vicariously.

Still, a lot of people are much much worse off than my loved ones, so there is an enormous amount to be grateful for. I can only imagine what it's been like for everyone down there -- very glad to read here that all the ToRNsibs are OK.

Thanks for thinking of me, Riv :-) Lovely to see that folks on here remember me!
