Yep, I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Christchurch looked like such a wonderful place to visit - I'm sure it will be again sometime.

We've enjoyed Melbourne and are looking forward to Sydney! Tomorrow, we're taking a Great Ocean Road bus trip.

Over 100 [In reply to] Can't Post

aftershocks I just saw on Fox News - at least 20 last night. Man I feel for you guys/gals. Hang in there!

King Arthur: Who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder?
Tim: There are some who call me... Tim.

Tim: Follow. But. Follow only if ye be TORNsibs of valour, for the making of The Hobbit is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no TORNsib yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of an A List veteran director lie strewn about its lair. So, brave TORNsibs, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for Hollywood studio bureaucratic ineptitude awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth!

Studio Exec: And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped.
Studio CEO: This new learning amazes me, Studio Lapdog. Explain again how sheeps' bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.

you can retrieve any things of value at your house, and bring them to where you're staying?

If only it were possible for one of us to provide a home for Midgey (and the cats!) until this is over!

Probably [In reply to] Can't Post

But we are having so many quakes at the moment we don't want to go anywhere just now. The current advice is not to travel unless it is an emergency anyway. I just rang the police to go and check on my neighbour, who is staying put despite the two storey house next to her being cordoned off because it is condemned and will fall on her if it collapses.

Wine [In reply to] Can't Post

Yesterday we were listening to the trauma counsellor on the radio talking about what to watch out for as indicators of *not coping*. There was hysterical laughter as the person said, "Watch out for addictive behaviours such as over-eating, and alcohol consumption." At the time I was pouring wine and my friend was demolishing a bag of lollies! Laugh

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Wardrobe malfunction. [In reply to] Can't Post

The shallow 5.1 aftershock this morning wasn't an aftershock - it was a new earthquake. The mayor then came on radio - he didn't sound good. Not many people heard that little interview because the quake knocked out power again, but the radio station replayed that interview later once power was back on.

I then realized that I hadn't eaten anything for a few days & that I've lost a lot of weight. So I went to the supermarket (amazingly it was still open though some of the ceiling had collapsed) to get some food - & my pants fell down!

I'll keep on truckin'.

Brandy in my coffee please [In reply to] Can't Post

It was a tough one this morning. This aftershock threw more books around than the Saturday quake. The worst of it was the dreadful smell of sewerage in our part of town - I thought the army would ask us to leave. I fine it easier to keep working! The smell disappeared after a couple of hours thank goodness.

I phoned all staff advising them not to come in to work if they were too nervous - they all desperately wanted to come in to work so they would have company. It's much better being together.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I'm a bit nervous about getting through tonight.

We're at 284 aftershocks and counting... [In reply to] Can't Post

as of not-quite 3 hours ago. I'm so jumpy, my adreneline shoots up when I hear the slightest rumbling or house-noise: a door opening, a heavy car driving by outside, the dog pawing at the door, the boys dropping something: it all sounds like the start of another aftershock. I have to say, though, I'm getting more likely to stay put than head for cover: "Oh, that feels like about a 4.5 right now; I think I'll just sit here and wait." My younger boy, NZ Toddler, is really nervous about it all. I put him down for his nap this afternoon and he clung to me asking if there would be another earthquake. He finally lay down muttering to himself, "No more big aftershocks, just lots and lots of little aftershocks...". He's also been getting up in the night and joining us in bed. Actually, I took our older boy out last night to sleep in our sleepout with me. I felt a lot more secure sleeping in a room with an aluminum roof and siding, as opposed to our brick house with its heavy tile roof!

Our little town just north of Christchurch is hard-hit in pockets, but our neighborhood is more or less fine. Funnily enough, a teenage girl delivering yoghurt, cheese, and water knocked on our door this afternoon. I assured her we were fine and had all the food we needed, but she insisted I take some, so I took some yoghurt. Good on her for getting out to help people; that was really touching. The level of support out here is fantastic, and although the grocery store has lots of gaps on its shelves, it's got plenty of food as long as you don't have your heart set on one particular thing. Our downtown "central business district" -- really just a couple of blocks of businesses on one street -- has been reopened to the public, but lots of the businesses are still closed and some are severely damaged. Our swimming pool, library, and post office are closed indefinitely, and the smaller of our two grocery stores, which was in the process of undergoing extensive renovations which they were very excited about, will probably be demolished.

Our university has delayed reopening for another week, til 20th Sept, meaning we're losing two weeks of teaching, or else having the end of the semester pushed back. Not sure yet. We're expecting to be allowed back in to clean up our personal spaces tomorrow and Friday, but we won't be allowed to do much more than that. The library suffered major damage inside (though not structural); there might still be some pictures up here. They're saying we won't be allowed to access any books for the rest of the semester. How we can teach, and how students can be taught, without books in many disciplines remains a mystery.

That's about it from here -- I'm back to the sleepout tonight!
