She's not near Christchurch. [In reply to] Can't Post

If I remember right, she's up in Nelson; and if I'm wrong about Nelson, I am at least sure she's nowhere near Christchurch. I spoke to someone last night who's in Nelson. She felt the quake up there, but it wasn't anywhere near strong enough to cause damage. So I'm sure Estelwyn's okay!

How is the weather treating you this morning? I hope the wind is kinder than forecast.

which is a 20 minute walk from the now closed-off central city. I think they're about to send in the cadaver dogs. Oh well, I'm still alive & confident of being in The Hobbit. After all, if I can get into Narnia, I'm sure I can get into The Hobbit.

A moment of humour: [In reply to] Can't Post

I heard on radio news that all the Pak 'N Save supermarkets in Christchurch are open this morning, and the products most in demand are water, batteries, fresh meat ... and liquor.

Can't blame them, really!

I'm finally here [In reply to] Can't Post

What an unreal experience the last day has been! I'm fine and our house has not been damaged, though like Starling and Nienna I have broken glasses and ornaments, including 2 of my LOTR busts Unsure. The pantry emptied itself all over the kitchen but really we got off lightly compared to others. We have power now and water which we are supposed to boil first. My boss rang me an hour ago and said our workplace in the city centre has been damaged and not to come in tomorrow or Tuesday when the situation will be reassessed. The aftershocks are still coming, though I think I'm imagining they are getting weaker and less frequent. I think the fact that the quake hit at 4.30am has been a blessing because most people were safely in their beds, not at work or on the streets. There's going to be a massive amount to do to get Christchurch back up and running properly.

Because of the fire in the central city, there was talk of it. It was only in one building though. Actually, it was in a really revolting strip club which I have always hated. No comment...

And I'm glad to hear your house has come through it unscathed.

I've been really impressed with how thorough and organised Civil Defence has been (or so it appears from the news reports). Between that and the Government, and communities rallying to help each other, it sounds like everything is in hand for the immediate care and long-term recovery. How does it look to you on the ground?

I am in the central city, just outside the cordon.
I am in the queue to get the Earthquake Commission to assess the house, as I have no idea if it is safe. The cracks have increased since the first night of aftershocks.
At least I don't have to go to work for a couple of days, so I can gather my wits!

Hang in there. Smile

It is a relief to see that you have checked in.
You may not be able to get to work for a while, by the look of things here in town.

I am so sick of those aftershocks. At least they are becoming fewer and far between, but the poor dog is very sensitive to them and he may need a valium prescription.

I slept at my friend's last night [In reply to] Can't Post

I came home this morning and the landlord came round with his builder friend to have a look. A lot of the cracks appear to be just surface ones in the plaster and wallpaper, but there has been significant movement in the outside wall, and possibly in the wall between the two flats.
Now we have to wait for our turn with the Earthquake Commission.
I am quite happy pottering around in the day, as there is still a lot of tidying up to do. I have places to go tonight if I don't want to sleep here.

We've Been in Australia Attending Aussiecon... [In reply to] Can't Post

...we'd planned to go to Christchurch tomorrow...

We understand our B&B is pretty much undamaged and is open. However, now we hear there's water contamination. Since this is our first (and likely only) trip to this part of the world, we'd really hoped to see a little of New Zealand. I'm currently on hold with my airline, trying to see if I can swap a Melbourne-Christchurch flight for a Melbourne-Wellington flight.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

It would be a tourist experience you wouldn't forget! Seriously, though, I wouldn't bother. I live in the central city and it is a mess. Even if your B & B is undamaged, as you mentioned there are problems with water, sewerage is an ongoing issue, and large areas of the central city are cordoned off, making it very difficult to get around.
Christchurch is definitely not at its sparkling best. Unsure

I've been out of town for the past few days, and I've only just now heard about this. Your recount has me so fearful of what you've been through and what could still happen. I'm so sorry you've had to go through this, but I thank God that you're all okay. This is incredible.

Give your menfolk and extra hug for me... and for you *warm hug*

I'm still so stunned...

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
