Whenever I become anxious or frustrated with the snags and pitfalls that have befallen this production, I need to remind myself that those snags and pitfalls have to be infinitely more frustrating for those of you who are (or were) in the middle of all this. Good luck to you! I know that these films will bear your imprint, and I am grateful for that.

You've left some mighty big shoes to fill. I hope whoever succeeds you as director of The Hobbit will "get" the story the same way you do. Thanks also for taking time to communicate directly with your fans on TORN. It's been a real treat to read your posts. Namarie!

I am saddened by the whole situation, but understand your decision and can only wish you the best, and I look forward to seeing your next movie (any chance on a film version of "The Willows"?). You rock, thanks for reaching out to fans, I enjoyed sharing reading lists on a post and discussing Algernon Blackwood! Peace

I have not been on the boards here in ages, but I *have* kept abreast of the news. While it deeply saddens me to read of your painful departure, it is also understandable. Your mark will still be indelibly stamped upon this project, and will be heard in the script and seen in the props and characters. Your love of Tolkien's story is not diminshed with this decision. All the best to you and to your family - you are a courageous man and a dedicated filmmaker. Good luck.
There's something of everything here, The Shire and the Golden Wood and Gondor and kings' houses and inns and meadows and mountains all mixed. ....and there are Elves when you want them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Formerly A'amel from days gone by.

I'm sure that we won't forget all the work that you have put into the films, and I think that you are amazing, as you are the only director on any film that I have heard of that has posted on the message boards of any fan site. I really hope that you will drop in again sometime! I hope you enjoy watching all the filmic family albums, and I'm really really really sad that you have to go!!

My feelings about all this, and my sadness for you over the decision you had to make, are impossible to express. I look forward to your future work and catching up on some things I've missed (The Strain comes out in paperback here on June 30th). Nothing you do ever disappoints. Perhaps when you are up around David Cronenberg's or Ridley Scott's age we can look forward to your version of the Hobbit, a remake if you will, or perhaps more accurately, the way it should have been made... With deep respect and thanks, Dennis Chadwick

Dear Guillermo, I'm so sorry that things turned out as they did, but I'm sure we'll see your "fingerprints" in the Hobbit when the time is right, and we see it come to completion... It's too bad there were so very many obstacles... Wishing you the very best in all that is ahead for you and for your family... Namarie!

Thank you Guillermo, for all you have put into this project, and for the time you have spent here among us on the boards. It was very exciting to hear your comments and bits of information along the way. I was looking forward to seeing your vision of The Hobbit. And now, I look forward to seeing your influence once these films finally hit the big screen. We wish you all the best.

This decision must have evoked so much emotion and i know i cannot fathom it's depth. I can only say that you have added already so much value to the process and to our lives. I believe the tide of TH will be before us all too, as you suspect and we can all take the joy of it together because i feel you are very much one of us in heart and soul. I will wish you peace of mind in days to come and may it be ever fruitful on your road of inspired and creative ventures.
''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings! In the air, among the clouds in the sky Here is where the birds of Manwe fly Looking at the land, and the water that flows The true beauty of earth shows With the stars of Varda lighting my way In all the realms this is where I stay In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

Whatever some people may wonder and second guess about this decision, the bottom line is no matter how great or important a project may be, there is a limit to how long your life can be on hold for such a thing. Mr. Del Toro -- thanks for all you gave to the effort. While it surely is a very sad moment for most of us, including myself, I'm sure it is saddest for you in ways we can only imagine. The way this is going, who knows? Maybe you'll complete a few other projects and find yourself free again by the time The Hobbit ever gets a green light, though admittedly, as fans, we certainly have to hope things will work out much sooner than that. Meanwhile, to us your name will always be in the credits no matter what -- though surely you will make it there more literally anyway, given all you've contributed. All the best in future ventures.

for keeping us in mind. I am looking forward to seeing your next several projects. Thanks for all the work you have put in on these films. I'm very appreciative you've put in so much time and effort to this project. There are those who would not have done as much with the current status of the films. To me that shows passion, loyalty and dedication to the art of movie making. Well done sir! Do what you feel is right! And do come back to join us when you have a few free moments!
What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

I'm sure that Mr GDT's contribution will have been startling; I remember being moved so much by Pan's Labyrinth, especially where the fantastical side didn't detract from - indeed it wholly fed - the emotion. I do hope that like Sir PJ he will be allowed cameos in the Hobbit mkovies - let's cheer ourselves up and think about where HE might turn up eating a carrot or whatever...!

Thank you, GDT, for your messages to us here and for the care you have put into these movies so far. I won't repeat all that I wrote before, when your departure was first announced. The feelings are the same; we are honoured indeed to have had you in our midst, and I hope you won't be a stranger! Knowing what it is to be involved in creative endeavours, I can imagine - but only imagine - how very, very hard it is for you to walk away from these films, and how frustrating it must be to see legal issues create this impasse. Please know that we all here (well, if I can take the liberty of speaking for the community in general! certainly I, anyway!) feel for you, and are saddened to see you go. I wish you every success and look forward to seeing your future creations - with a sense of pride that a member of 'our' community makes such wonderful art. Blessed be!

have gone so far, GdT probably felt it best to make the change before filming started. It would have been worse to fine it was necessary to leave after filming commenced. Good Job, Elizabeth!
