I know we were all wanting some big news, but not this kind! [In reply to] Can't Post

First time I've been able to get on the site since the news broke -- I guess that's good for TORn's traffic count...

I did manage to check some other sites, though, that follow GDT's works -- it made me feel better to read comments from many folks who are happy that this will now allow GDT to focus on some films they've been waiting for just as eagerly as we've been wanting to see the Hobbit. So, some other great films will be made by him instead, for people who are waiting for them, and that's not a bad thing..

I was not very familiar with GDT's works, but he did win me over with the way he responded to all of us here, and convinced me that he had an approach to the Hobbit that made sense and would be an intriguing take on the tale. I'd love to see him keep hanging around here, too, but that's probably unlikely of course. I liked his energy -- at times very clear, at times teasing, and serious and lighthearted at the same time. No wonder he seemed so right for the Hobbit!

When I think of all the setbacks LOTR had, and the way that all worked out, that gives me hope for the same in this case as well. And maybe we'll eventually see a GDT Hobbit remake -- after all, Jackson finally got to do his King Kong. So if this a story he's meant to tell, I'd like to think that might happen yet, somewhere down the road.

Release Dates [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I'm impressed with TheOneRing.net for breaking this! They've been mentioned by every major news organization this week and should be proud.

Anyway, I must admit I have not read all 150 posts here, but something in the news stories caught me eye: they said The Hobbit movies are going to be released in 2012 and 2013. The interesting thing is that I don't think there's ever been an official announcement regarding this. We were originally told that the films would be released 2011 and 2012, though we've sort of gotten hints since (and assumed) the films would be delayed. It's interesting that as this newer, bigger news (about del Toro) has hit, the release date situation has been forgotten or overlooked (by the mainstream media, not by you guys.) My guess is the 2012 and 2013 dates are just target dates and there won't be an official announcement until the film has a greenlight. Kind of weird the media would be reporting them like they are.

Well, we're midway through 2010... [In reply to] Can't Post

There is no director, the cast has not been announced and there is a big question mark regarding funding from the studio.

I am thinking 2013 and 2014, the same conclusion Mark Sommer came to earlier in this thread based on the insinuation in Peter Jackson's remark:

Quote
"The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn't feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years."

2008 + 6 years = 2014. Nice catch Mark!

I'm a bit worried about the [In reply to] Can't Post

'quickly' part myself. Quickly as in 'lets get the ball rolling on this project' I'm more than fine with. But 'lets get this thing slapped together and released pronto so we can get some cash as quick as we can', worries me. I'm hoping (even though we've all been waiting and waiting and waiting) that PJ has enough clout still with the new folks running things that he can put the brakes on a bit so that the movies are given enough time evolve properly. I don't know about anyone else, but I waited years for the LOTR movies be done well (imho of course), I have no problem waiting a little longer for the Hobbit movies to be done well. Waiting this long for a couple of horrible movies would definitely leave a sour taste in my mouth (as I'm sure it would countless others!).

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

Wow [In reply to] Can't Post

So I'm sitting an hour south of Mexico City in a town called Cocoyoc and haven't had access to the internet until now. And then log onto TORN and see ... this news.

I can only wish Guillermo well and express my fondest and most sincere regrets that he will no longer be a part of this adventure. I certainly understand the frustrations he's had and do not begrudge a great filmmaker from wanting to actually wanting to get back to his craft.

I know this project is dear to his soul, as it is (of course) to Peter, Fran and Philippa. As long as it remains within their very capable hands, I am sure (eventually) The Hobbit will be made in a manner we all hope to see with a director that has the characteristics required. Which Peter himself has in spades already.

The Hobbit is worth 6 years [In reply to] Can't Post

Nothing Del Toro will do during the next six years will be remembered as significant compared to directing the Hobbit. Indeed, he will be remembered more for having co-written the Hobbit screenplay than for any of his movies, which most people cannot even name (ask the guy sitting next to you right now).

"Del Toro, yes, I remember him; he is the guy who did not direct the Hobbit. Can't name any of his movies off hand..."

In short, devoting six years to making the Hobbit is worth it. Surprised Del Toro did not see it that way.

Epic career misstep.

It is not the end of the world [In reply to] Can't Post

Guillermo is a great director, he is to good to wait for stupid delays. I am a little disapointed that he is not directing, but I think that any work he put into the hobbit will live on because any director who takes the reins will be crazy or prideful to ignore Guillermo's work. I hope that Guillermo can start on something like Frankenstein or Hellboy III.

As for who should take over, I agree with many other people, Alfonso should take over, he did a great job revitalizing the Harry Potter franchize and his other films are all great.

Very Unfortunate [In reply to] Can't Post

I was looking forward to GDT's new look/feel to middle earth...I only hope now that PJ steps in and directs...only he and GDT know how this thing should be directed.

I noticed something odd in GDT's comment when he said "The blessings have been plenty"...maybe he just used that word loosely, but isn't he an Atheist..?

What really happened [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To:
"To pay his legal bills and the punitive judgements against him for breaches of contract with the other studios he has committed to make films for?"

If you are right, then what really happened was Del Toro told MGM (or whoever), "Look, if I direct the Hobbit, you will have to pay untold dollars to absolve my obligations to other studios" and they said "No way." And he said, "Well then I guess I'm out."

This puts it in a whole different light, makes a lot of sense, and fits with the press releases, where they mention his obligations to other projects.

Seems like PJ might find himself in the same boat, though, if he too has obligations to other studios' projects. Guess they really do need a new director, and one who is not booked. This could be interesting.

Mr Del Toro [In reply to] Can't Post

I have only just been able to reply to your post to say how sad this turn of events makes me. I think most of us who post on TORN have come to believe that you are the best of all choices to bring the Hobbit to the screen as Director. Your insight, commitment and integrity have been proven to us and many will now fear what this forced change will bring as a degraded end product. I hope this fear will be proved wrong. It is, of course, equally sad that you have to leave this project after two years of full effort without achieving any final result.

Obviously the MGM situation and delays were not expected or welcome but I do hope that this situation does not signal increasingly fundamental problems with the project that will be seen to become even more damaging as time goes on. I wish you the very best for all future projects but still hold on to a slim hope that some agreement means you could return to Directing the Hobbit project.

Not the Messiah's Birthday --> His Visitation from Magi [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought The Strain on Cyber Monday from Amazon.com.

I see your interests in the Vampire corpus remain sacrosanct, Director Guillermo, if not a continuity to the Blade themes of disease born affliction for the un-dead.

I'll try to get your second and third novels, as I finish this first.

It doesn't necessarily need to be Christmas, but perhaps cold though....

This way the odors aren't as strong from the Cancer of Christmas Eve.

Oh?

I hardly noticed you weren't involved anymore.

I agree.

3-D will not be sincere to the soundtrack's scape Dimensionality.
