Dear All- [In reply to] Can't Post

I intend to post a more lengthy post later in the week. Today is a day where I feel like collecting myself and meditating about all things past present and future. nevertheless I didn't want the day to be over without dropping you all a line. Compa- I did intended to be the Irving K of middle Earth and your "handle" in fact always inspired me to do good. Much of the visual design and previs and creatures etc is likely to survive into the final movie, so, I'll be delighted to see the final film and trust that the right director will step in into this massive endeavour.

I will drop by soon enough and I want to thank you all for the kindness, wrmth and wisdom you have shared with me.

Yours Truly

No, lets not hope that [In reply to] Can't Post

I do not want PJ to take the reins. We got 9 hours of PJ's Middle Earth and it is time for someone else to give it a shot. The dream choice would be Alfonso Cuaron, IMO. He would both present a strong (and brilliant) vision, while respecting GDT's and PJ's work thus far.

I'm going to have a tough time being as optimistic about these films with someone new at the helm.

and self respect. Good on you Guillermo for having the grit to make such a decision as you have.

You have set a Stirling example for those of us who live perpetually at the crossroads, fearing to go forward while lamenting the road not taken.

May you be blessed.

Wh-a-a-a! [In reply to] Can't Post

It is 12:30 in the morning and I am heading back to work for 12 hours with about an hours sleep. I got up and found the announcement and still feel queezy. I do not know if its from not sleeping or this news. I have truly fallen in love with your movies and appreciate your open honesty. I can imagine what a disappointment this decision must be for you. It would have been a great ride!

The promotional commitments [In reply to] Can't Post

extend well beyond the release dates. Six years from 2008 until the dust settles on the second film's BluRay/DVD release sounds about right.

2. Ridley Scott.

Scott, a master of the epic, would likely give us, well, something quite epic!

Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors, but he is NOT right for The Hobbit at all.Unsure

I really hope PJ decides to do it, but I don't see that happening.

Best of luck, GDT [In reply to] Can't Post

Apart from my frustration with the delays that seem to have brought about GDT's departure, as well as the disappointment that I will apparently never see his full vision for The Hobbit brought to the screen, I am awestruck by the class with which GDT has handled himself from moment one of his involvement. His humility, his respect for the source material, as well as his willingness to reach out to the fans, seemed to make him a perfect fit for the project. Alas, it is not to be, but there doesn't seem to be an ounce of resentment or finger pointing in his press release. He seems to feel truly honored to have made his imprint on the movie, and gives it his full blessing going forward. I tip my hat to him and wish him the best.

no longer care [In reply to] Can't Post

I knew it was too good to be true when he was announced as director. If PJ does not do it at this point I have no interest in seeing these films. All I'd be able to do while watching is think how much better it would have been if.......oh well, I'll stick to the books. Thanks for hangin' in there GDT. Can't blame you one bit. I look forward to your future projects and will always wish for your version of the Hobbit to have been made. I'm so frustrated with the powers that be right now that I should just stop typing.

Very Disheartening News... [In reply to] Can't Post

Nevertheless, as with all things, it happened for a reason. Not losing hope that these movies will eventually be made, and the right director will be chosen to step in and helm the project from here on out. Best of luck to you, sir .

A loss [In reply to] Can't Post

I will not say that nobody else can do the job or that two "Hobbit" films will not be of great interest to me when they play before my eyes (eventually) in the cinema.

It is comforting that scripts are finished and that GDT's stamp will be on the films.

However, I will always mourn not seeing Guillermo del Toro's "Hobbit". I am confident he had great things in store for us.

Another loss that I am feeling is that no director will ever be as generous to our community as GDT was with us here these past couple of years. His participation in dialog on these pages and his lack of pretense and his interest in speaking to and with fans in unfiltered conversation was meaningful to me on a personal level.

I don't mean that I have delusions that he was my friend but I claim with no hesitation that he was our friend and was one of us (although a remarkable one of us.)

He already directed one of my favorite films and I will continue to watch his career but now with affection for the creator.

As far as I am concerned he is part of the TORn family and will continue to report on his creative efforts. All is not lost on the Hobbit films but we have absolutely suffered a loss. I will always wonder about HIS unmade Hobbit movies.

And of course we wish him all success in all things.

I have no choice but to believe in free will.

I won't belive it untill i see and hear the interwiev. But if it's true.
I think that this is only a major publicity stunt, not for fame, but to get the project going. A wake up call.
I can't wait to see how the world reacted in the Extended eddition of The Hobbit.

All the best to The Hobbit Crew.

Mr. Del Toro [In reply to] Can't Post

I want to thank you for all of the work you've invested in this project over the last two years. I don't mean to sound like a brown-noser, but you really were THE guy I wanted for this project, and I continue to stand by that. However, I understand you have other commitments/projects that you'd like to get underway (Hellboy 3, Frankenstein, and At the Mountains of Madness to name a few). And while I would love nothing more than for you to direct these films, I very much look forward to your future work.

I'd also like to thank you for dropping by every now and then and talking to us fans. It really is a testament to your character.

I'm very sorry that it's come to this. Obviously it's out of everybody's hands, but it really is an absolute shame. I guess all I can do is hope and pray that most of your design work remains intact in the final version, since I am a huge fan of your aesthetic eye. This is especially true for Smaug. Your comments on his design especially had me grinning from ear to ear.

All I can say is thank you for the work you've done, good luck with your future endeavors, and all the best.

Oh, no! [In reply to] Can't Post

I am so sorry for reading ths news! I thought the films would be great not only because they are "Tolkien", not only because the scripts are written by the same guys as LOTR, but also because Mr. del Toro was directing them. And he was so excited about this. But he is wright to leave the project, he has others to take care of.
All I hope, now, is that PJ will direct the films. Alfonso Cuaron could be a good choice too, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" is my second favourite HP movie (after "The Chamber of Secrets").

Thank you, Mr. del Toro for everything you have done for Middle Earth, for us, fans of Middle Earth and take good care in the future! Good luck! Smile

Six years from 2008 start is only 2013 (inclusive) [In reply to] Can't Post

So that is still consistent with a 2012/2013 distribution...later than I would have liked, but beggars can't be choosers.
(2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 = six years).

Best wishes to you Guillermo in your new endevors and I hope you continue to drop by here on the forums - it has been a pleasure lurking in the background reading what you have had to say about the porcess!

I couldn't bring myself to pen down any of the thoughts that have been running through my head... [In reply to] Can't Post

... since I read the news this morning. I've been pondering about a lot of things, not all of which can be said in a public forum without me running the risk of exposing my most sentimental side.

Guillermo, or GDT, as I've learned to call you, I don't know you personally, but I do really feel like I "know" you. That probably makes no sense, but I suppose you do have an inkling of what I'm trying to convey.

To go back a few years, let me say that I hated the idea of someone other than PJ directing these films. After the months of uncertainty, you finally came on board, and I had no idea what to expect of you - you were the "wild card" on this project.

But over these couple of years you've shared with us not just your vision for The Hobbit but also your notion of fantasy and how fantastical creatures can come to embody human traits both at their best and worst. Before long, I was no longer afraid for The Hobbit. Yes, I was cautious about my expectations, but I also came to trust in you to make these the best films they could be. I became a believer.

This morning I feel a strange sense of loss - strange because I ask myself "How can you feel like you've lost something you never had?" And I'm telling myself "No. I did have GDT. We did "have" GDT. He was not only THE director, one whom I no longer felt was imposed on me but one whom I wanted to see make these films... no, he was OUR friend". We none of us have seen what you've done with these films thus far, and our only contact with you has been via these boards, and sheesh! I will miss that. You're a funny guy GDT, your posts could have lightened our hearts at the worst of times, and yet they had a certain gravity that gave us little glimpses into the brilliant person that you are.

I don't know where and how to end this post. Nothing I've said seems enough, nor will be. I'm not angry, not frustrated, not... nothing! Today I want to be silent, I want to be by myself. I don't feel anything. I feel... numb! I wonder if you know that feeling...

This can't be happening.. I am hoping this is a bad dream.. If it is true this is ^&^%$. Guillermo delToro, since 'El Espinoza del Diablo', one of my favorite directors.. Gone.

I hope all the best for you mister G. I am looking forward to your 'AtMoM'. I hope that some doors are opened with your time at the wheel of 'The Hobbit'. As of now I don't want to think of 'The Hobbit'. Good luck!

(and I hope there will be a messageboard on the official site of 'At the Mountains of Madness', so you can reach your fans on a personal level :), ofcourse you still can drop by on these boards.. I hope so. I really liked your nice (and intelligent) words on literature and fims. And ofcourse in a few months we will have 'The Fall'..)

Good luck!

So, so sad [In reply to] Can't Post

What a piece of news to wake up to...

I was another one who wanted Peter Jackson to direct 'The Hobbit' at first, but over the months I've come to share the excitement that many of us here felt about seeing Guillermo's vision of the story brought to life on film. To see it come to this is heart-wrenching for us, for you and the creative team in New Zealand it must be devastating.

Sir, you've been a complete gentleman to us over the months and I respect your decision and wish you well with all your future projects. Thank you.
