That's a common phrase - "Lord willin' and the creek don't rise" - and I've use it myself, never expecting, of course, that it would come true in a literal sense! That adds another amazing element into their already hair-raising story. Oh, gosh, that must have been one of the worst days of your life, not knowing where they were...

I'm recovered now, and NZ Toddler hasn't yet produced a repeat masterpiece -- though he was caught yesterday trying to get his pants down. Must put overalls on him tomorrow... Beren's tumor, the vets finally decided, was inoperable after all. So he got to keep his leg, but the tumor as well. It's a pretty aggressive one, unfortunately. He's been in good spirits up until about a week ago, when he discovered himself unable to run with his sister because it made him violently cough too much. Now anything faster than a slow walk is too much for him. He's eating people-food with extreme encouragement (buttered bread, cheese, and roast chicken with gravy), but I don't think even that bit of appetite is going to last for more than a couple more days. So he doesn't have much longer to go. We're just giving him all the love and indulgences we can right now. Did you know Beren (and the other two dogs) once spent the night on the bed with a certain person who stayed at my house who shares a first name with BG? I still laugh about that one. They always abandoned me at the first sign of company.

I'm sorry about your pup. I was so happy to see you, I forgot to ask about him. He is so lucky to have you, but why did this have to happen? This is the worst part of having pets. I had to intervene for my friend last week to help her understand he dog had reached his time. I've lost many myself... and it's never... you know... *warm hug* I'm so sorry, Ro. I know how much your furry kids mean to you.
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world. TORn's Observations Lists

It's so nice to be able to drop in and get a chance to reconnect a bit. :-) My seasons are still cross-wired, so I get the usual dejected about the onset of winter (and it's like Narnia in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe": it's always winter without Christmas!), then double-dejected about the onset of winter-like weather in May, just when the spring lambs and bunnies should be out frolicking and the earth should be smelling warm again. Then I can't figure out what to make of January, when I should be wearing wool sweaters and drinking hot chocolate but instead I've got the air conditioning on! Some people have said you get used to it after 5 years, but I haven't got there yet. I think the worst part is winter without Christmas. Get your bags packed and come on down this way! Sure would love to see you. We've had a dearth of visitors lately, and you've been promising to come for too long now. Our sleepout (or "outhouse", as my mother calls it) is waiting!

Fingers crossed that NZ Toddler doesn't go in for more passion and creativity any time soon. Oddly, Eldarion, who is by far the bigger troublemaker, never engaged in that particular misdeed. NZ Toddler is usually so mild-mannered and well-behaved (he even always says "thank-you" without any prompting, something Eldarion still won't do) that it sure catches us by surprise when he does something scoldable. I think Eldarion at this age was getting several time-outs a day; NZ Toddler probably gets less than one a week -- and not because we've just gotten more indulgent! I hope your weekend with your mom is going well. I also hope she knows what a gem of a daughter she has. :-)

I remember way back in my TORn newbie days when your beloved dog Squid passed away. I remember doing my best to write a poem in Elvish for you about him. Not sure I could even translate it now if I happened to find it again! Must have been hard to help your friend see what needed to be seen. You're such a dear. But I know this is the price we have to pay for all the love we share with them...doesn't really make it easier, though.

I admit double-taking when I first read it in this thread because my son's name is Beren. Not long into my divorce proceedings (pending as I type) I lost my golden retriever. She had been steadily losing her appetite for about four weeks or so and when my wife snatched my son and filed charges against me (I filed for the divorce so what she did was solely out of spite) poor Lucky just stopped eating altogether. I finally got her to the vet two weeks later and all the tests came back normal. Faced with the cruel choice of spending another $400 on tests or using that money for a completely unnecessary legal battle or opting for palliative care that might extend her life another 2 weeks or so I opted for her to rest. I had her for 12 of her 13 years and she'd had a good life but losing your first-ever pet is always hard. I hope your family takes it's ease in that Beren had a fine eight years with you as you're obviously a loving and caring family.

Yes, marmite and pototo chip sandwiches do exist, as do just plain ol' chip sandwiches. I would put it down to the oddities of children's tastes but I clearly remember one of my brother scarfing chip sandwiches when he was in his mid-teens. You had to eat them immediately after making them though, or the butter on the bread would make the chips go soft, and that was just gross. I remember that honey and hundreds-and-thousands sandwiches was a treat when I was in primary school. The idea of that mixture now is faintly nauseating.

it's always winter without Christmas! Maybe you could start a family tradition of having a special dinner at home in mid-winter, to give you a celebration to build up to? Think of the personalisation you could give it! I never considered the oddity of Easter and new life (represented by eggs) occuring in autumn until I thought about its origins in the northern hemisphere, during spring.

but putting potato chips in sandwiches can't be just a Kiwi thing, because it's still done in my neck of the woods. Seltzer's Lebanon or Sweet Lebanon Bologna, with ketchup and Utz potato chips on buttered bread is a regional favorite. Mom thought it was hilarious when she found out Dad's family did the same thing. (My mother started adding mustard to hers in my teen years, but I know she didn't always behave so oddly.) It's still common in other families, too, so when you see somebody get a packed lunch out and can smell the Lebanon bologna...you discretely look for the little bag of chips and watch to see if the sandwich gets opened. Then you know you're among your own kind. *** I have nothing but pity for the rare unfortunate local lacking the palate for any kind of Lebanon bologna. Visitors on business trips would have it shipped back home. College kids have it sent in care packages.

and they are just the sweetest breed. Mr. Losse and I always say we'll never have another breed of dog after having our first grey. We had a female before and wanted a great big male this time. Boy, did we ever get one! He is an absolute love. They generally are couch potatoes. He goes on two walks a day, but doesn't run at all. He usually doesn't even run at the dog park. He is very playful in the house, though, and loves to chase after his toys.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Aragorn threw back his cloak. The elven-sheath glittered as he grasped it, and the bright blade of Andúril shone like a sudden flame as he swept it out. “Elendil!” he cried. “I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil’s son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!” TTT, Book III, Chapter 2 And Éomer answered: “Since the day when you rose before me out of the green grass of the downs I have loved you, and that love shall not fail.” RotK, Book VI, Chapter 5

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. Return of the King. Thank you to all service men and women on this Memorial Day.

parts of chapters 10 and 11 of my novel are about the Big Thompson flood, and are based on stories I heard from my parents and Butch, and at the memorial reunions I've gone to. I also used one of the reunions as the basis for chapters 43 and 44. It just occurred to me, and given the topic of this subthread I thought I'd mention it. Thanks for your sweet thoughts, and thanks to dernwyn too :-)
