Luke Goss for Thranduil [In reply to] Can't Post

-I could buy him as Legolas' dad, and he even has a voice similar to Bloom's (in Hellboy 2, at least).
-Worked with GDT before.
-Pretty good actor, from what I've seen.

Casting the Voice of Smaug [In reply to] Can't Post

For Smaug you need an actor with a voice in a deep register (even if you boost the low end due to Smaug's size) who can project charismatic, smooth menace. So out of left field, how about Iggy Pop, Michael Dorn, or most especially Avery Brooks? Checked out any Deep Space 9 eps where Brooks gets angry? I wouldn't want to mess with him!

I hope that Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler and Hugo Weaving should certainly reprise their roles in The Hobbit.

Richard Armitage for Thranduil, all the way! [In reply to] Can't Post

I really think that Richard Armitage should play Thranduil. He has really elven features, not unlike those of Orlando Bloom, so it fits. When I saw Richard's picture, I just thought, "Wow! He looks just like how I imagined Thranduil!"

Armitage... [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree...Richard Armitage would be perfectly cast as Thranduil as well...

I don't, however, want to see either Viggo Mortensen or Liv Tyler in The Hobbit...
in no way does it enhance, nor make any it sense to the story.

Hi [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, he's been in dramas on the BBC - North and South (period drama); Spooks (modern day spy); and more lightweight stuff like the current series of Robin Hood where he plays a tortured Guy of Gisborne. Those are the ones I can recall off the top of my head.

I personally like him for Bard.

Well If You Use Orelando [In reply to] Can't Post

as the Ideal Elf, he does look the part. I am more concerned with acting as I am certain that Thranduil will be enhanced in the movies. You know, like have lines and stuff. He is visible in the book but does not have a lot to say.

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

When I say he's been in tv dramas I should have clarified to say that he has starred in these. I still see him as Bard more than Thranduil as he has that brooding man of action quality. Someone you could rely on in a tight spot. Not that I've given him too much thought you understand....

sorry but... [In reply to] Can't Post

there are so many other actors who'd be awesome as Bombur...
I really hope Gorge Garcia is not Bombur...
think of them casting a young, spry, swashbuckling Bilbo...not good right?

Bombur needs more years on him...
my first choice would be Ian McNeice.

quite likely... [In reply to] Can't Post

you're right...about ole Baggins...

I just think that are tons better choices to explore for Bombur...
I just get the sense that Garcia doesn't have that quality nor the vocal skill to match what I'd imagined Bombur to be like...
he sounds...not like a Dwarf should sound...in lieu of describing it outright...
but, I'm not making the decisions here, either, so...

the 'Lost' connection...not really all that pertinent...and not a convincing enough reason to cast him, in my humble opinion.
cheers.Evil

someone in a separate thread suggest another actor who may have had potential as Bombur...for get who it was now...

I find myself on both sides of many arguments [In reply to] Can't Post

this is partly due to a split in reality. First there is the book "The Hobbit" and all that lies within its pages. Second there are the references within the Book to happenings in the greater Middle-Earth. Third there are outside materials within Tolkien's writings that expand the understanding of the Hobbit within the greater Middle-Earth writings. Fourth there is the canon of the three Peter Jackson LotR films. Fifth there is the DelToro factor and his history as a film maker.

I will argue one way on what I think would work as a big market film and another for the story as written. I love the Peter Jackson movies but feel so very much more about the Tolkien book(s). Also I speculate on what might be done with each scene, applying what I know of cinema to the situations here I get to venture into how I would visualize the story. Pitching these ideas to the diverse group that hangs out around here gives me feedback and lets me see with new eyes.

What do people think of Charlie Cox? [In reply to] Can't Post

Am I the only one who thinks Charlie would be a PERFECT Bilbo? He's got just the right balance of good looks, similar features to Ian Holm, Britishness, and seriously great acting chops! Anyone else agree? Thoughts?

at first glance... [In reply to] Can't Post

I know I'm somewhat, if not a lot stalwart on this subject...I'll just hate it if they get the casting for Bilbo wrong...
they got it bang on with Ian Holm. period.

Charlie Cox...not the Bilbo I see at all...
I've never heard of this guy...never seen him act...but just by looking at him I'd have to say no...

he looks almost pretty enough for an Elf...but, I dunno...
you just have to kind of get a 'sense' about who the perfect Baggins should be...
don't get that from him...Evil

Good looking doesn't mean elfin; check the clip... [In reply to] Can't Post

See Stardust. Honestly, the character he plays at the beginning of that movie is the same sort of unexpected hero that Bilbo becomes. And, if you ask me, Elijah wood is pretty good looking. He played a hobbit!

Toby Jones [In reply to] Can't Post

On one hand, I would like the new Bilbo to bear at least somewhat of a resemblance to Ian Holm, just for the sake of continuity. However, I would love Toby Jones in the role.
