That's exactly why Martin Freeman is the only choice. [In reply to] Can't Post

He's got it all. The acting, the humor, the resemblance to Holm, and the downright hobbityness that Bilbo needs.

I hope not! [In reply to] Can't Post

I really hope it is not true. I have nothing against him, but I don't find him proper for this role (and, as someone said before, a very British role). Maybe, James McAvoy would be better Smile

Nope. [In reply to] Can't Post

If they're picking someone so iconic with another characters... then I choose Dom Monaghan. Or Craig Parker (Haldir). Nobey Tobey Thank'ee.

unkowns [In reply to] Can't Post

If it were up to me, the entire movie (excluding returning actors) would be cast with unkowns. One thing I've noticed over the years is that the more movies i see a certain actor in, the less likely i am to connect with their character. Seeing Tom Cruise in anything today does nothing for me. The novelty for most big name actors has worn off Unsure We need new blood to fill the void Sly

Shall I describe it for you, or would you like me to find you a box?

If Martin Freeman isn't cast as Bilbo, my interest in this film goes down [In reply to] Can't Post

I've no doubt McAvoy would do a fine job as Bilbo.

But I'm not interested in FINE. Just as Ian McKellan IS Gandalf, Cate Blanchette IS Galadriel, and Elijah Wood IS Frodo, Martin Freeman IS Bilbo!

Anything less than that is a capitulation to all the prepubescent females on this board clamoring sweatily for McAvoy.

As regards Toby, he'll be fine as Bard (or even a youngish-looking Thranduil).

There are pre-pubescent females around here? *looks confused*

I think an unknown would be best, so that everyone can sit back and enjoy the performance rather than constantly thinking "there's Martin Freeman/Tim from The Office/Arthur Dent".

Sean Astin and Elijah Wood were far more well-known than Martin Freeman. Yet few were distracted by The Goonies star in Fellowship. Hitchhikers was a flop in the U.S. The Office, while a success in the UK, is only known by a relative few here in the States.

More importantly, in both personality and looks, Martin IS that character. There is no other Bilbo out there.

Bard and Bilbo [In reply to] Can't Post

LOL, I never said it was ideal. It's do-able. But I don't have any real attachment to those characters, so as long as the actor is good enough in the role, and the role is well-written (unlike say Theoden which was a complete and egregious departure from the book), I'm open to Bard and Thranduil being any number of characters.

But Bilbo's the big one. A lot of us have a very intense affiliation with that character. And to be fully forthright, while I think Ian Holm is a wonderful actor and did a great job portraying an older version of that character, he was cast too old for the role. Gandalf tells him he hasn't aged "a day", which we understand is due to his possession of the ring. This will cause an issue when fans watch The Hobbit followed by Fellowship, and will necessitate either removing the line in a later version, or replacing the actor in FOTR. Since I don't see that happening anytime soon, the former seems to be the best course.

'clamoring sweatily for McAvoy.' [In reply to] Can't Post

Its a long time ago since I was pre pubescent but I will hope to be 'clamoring sweatily' over Bard, Thandruil or Beorn as us females were spoilt for choice in LotR, some how a hobbit and a bunch of wrinkly dwarves wont do it for me no matter who plays those parts and if Jedward are chosen to play Fili and Kili even more so thats why we need a few hunky males in TH and Toby isnt hunky by any stretch of the imagination (no offence intended).

Im just not sure how old GDT and PJ will want to potray Bilbo, I always liked Mc Avoy but would be happy with Freeman but I also think Colm Meany would look the part too.

I have the feeling that... [In reply to] Can't Post

In the end it will all work out fine. I have the fullest confidence that PJ and GdT will pick the right actor for Bilbo Baggins, that most people will be happy with the actor they choose, and the choosen actor WILL play a believable Bilbo.

well, this postmenopausal female, much as she also loves McAvoy, would rather see Freeman in the role over all the other names so far put forth. But I'm willing to be surprised by an unknown. All the great actors were "unknown" once . . .
