Not sure if there's a thread on this already, didn’t find any… So anywho, back to my question Do any of you use quotes from either the movies or books in everyday life? This is my list: (sorry if it’s a bit long ) ~I’m slightly annoyed at the beginning of The Fellowship (book that is) when Tolkien carries on with "Concerning Hobbits" when ever someone babbles incessantly (like my Dad in geek-speak-mode or my Grams) My Mum and I go “Concerning Hobbits!!!!” ~Bilbo's "I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." ~I use the "box line" from TTT, especially around my 5 foot nothing BFF ~When ever I don't want to share something I say "myyy precioussssssss," ~When ever I walk past the sushi counter in the grocery store sing Gollum's little song when he's in the forbidden pool. And the whole "give it to us raw and wiggling," bit ~when ever anyone hits me I go "White Light! White Light!". It's from the TTT appendices. ~This isn’t exactly a quote…But, when I’m gardening I have a tendency to talk to the plants and trees in Elvish (Quenya) and hope the willow in the back yard will sprout legs and start walking around and all sorts of stuff that I can't think of at the moment...
"For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars, from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds, and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!"

We've gotten this questions before... but it's ALWAYS FUN!!! I love the White Light one. I use that, too! When I'm miffed about something, "Well, isn't that a plague and a nuisance!" When I'm asked if I've gone to the meeting. "Yep. Been there and back again." "When in doubt... just follow your nose." Lots and lots of them that creep out when I least expect them ;)
"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West." ~Hug like a hobbit!~ "In my heaven..." I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world. TORn's Observations Lists

I like your list. I am lucky because my husband is as large a Tolkien and LOTR movies fan as I am. We certainly do use "My precioussss" a lot. Mustn't be hasty. Po-ta-toes, fine balast for an empty stomach.

"Second breakfast"? Ok, it may be goofy in a Jar Jar Binx way, but I remeber it fondly. The accent that is said with always cracks me up. Also "A pint!" best and strongest most memorable, etc is hands down :"YOU SHALL NOT PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASS!" Gandalf`s badassery at its finest. "And Rohan will respond!" I like it because it`s a closure to magnificent Lighting of the Beacons sequence. "Than you are not affraid enough" Strider to frodo after Frodo`s invisible goof with the ring "She`s an Elf!" Sam points out Arwen`s Obama-sh ears (OK, I made that up). I usually hate expository lines but this one was well-placed because one couldn`t know what she was. So sam is stunned that mythical Elf is in fact in front of them.

just went on a long weekend getaway to a little town called Fredericksburg, Texas. In that town, they have a hill that they call "Cross Mountain", on which someone has erected a giant metal lighted cross, which is pretty cool looking at night. In pioneer days, the hill served as a look-out as well as a point for beacon fires. So we got to joking around about beacons saying, "The beacon of Cross Mountain is lit! Fredericksburg calls for aid!" To which the reply could only be: "And Kerrville will answer." (Kerrville is a neighboring town.) Yeah, we crack ourselves up. We also thought that the trail up to Cross Mountain reminded us of Weathertop. You could even look down on one side and imagine seeing the Wraiths slipping up.
And suddenly the Ainur saw afar off a light, as it were a cloud with a living heart of flame.

Back to favorite quotes, I find Arwen quotes very cool, well, at least those showing she`s wearing pants in the relationship with Aragorn. Aragorn is so much like a Princess Aurora/Briar Rose from Disney`s Sleeping Beauty going "I thought I strayed into a dream", "I`m asleep. This is a dream" and "It was a dream, Arwen, nothing more." I was patiently waiting for him to break into singing "Once Upon a Dream". But Arwen will have none of it as she is bent on getting his way aka marrying Aragorn. So we get quotage coolness like: Aragorn: You said you'd bind yourself to me - forsaking the immortal life of your people. Arwen: And to that I hold! I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the Ages of this world alone....I choose a mortal life. (and while saying this she gives him the Evenstar necklace) Aragorn: You cannot give me this! Arwen: It is mine to give to whom I will....like my heart. I like how Arwen in unmoved by Aragorn`s reluctancy. Instead of trying a "tell me your fears" couch session with him, she pretty much orders him to take her heart and neckless. She doesn`t beg or plead, she demands. And then she stalks him It is nighttime and Aragorn is awake and smoking his pipe and remembering something about Arwen (below): Arwen: (this is said with her voice in the background to show he remembers this) The light of the Evenstar does not wax and wane...it is mine to give to whom I will...like my heart...sleep. Notice the "whom I will". She never says "you" which is why he rewinds it in his head over and over. She honored him but also gives a roundabout point that it`s her current will that it is given to him. She may change her will so be careful what you`re doing. In short, Arwen calls the shots, not Aragorn. he now thinks she is irreplaceable because she trained him to think so. Guys value trust very highly and Arwen did her best to assure him she`s the most trustworthy of the bunch aka nothing really matters but us, er, me but shhhhhh. Arwen: If you trust nothing else - trust this - trust us. (she then touches the Evenstar necklace that Aragorn now wears and looks up at him and they kiss). Finally, Aragorn trips over his relationship skirt in yet another failed attempt to break up with Arwen He then tries to give the Evenstar necklace back to Arwen but: Aragorn: This belongs to you.... Arwen: It was a gift - keep it.... Ice,ice, baby. That was cold. You can sense "or else" in her eyes and the way she pushed the neckless back into his hand. Aragorn remembers instantly that this is a babe who can summon waters and what not. An Airbender, Waterbender, maybe even Firebender but he won`t push her that far. Aragorn gets the message. There will be blood or there will be wedding. So he makes HER choice.

Quotes from the movies that I use in real life: "Taters, Precious". anytime anyone has spuds, that's what we say. And "Second Breakfast" - I not only say it, I eat it! (never knew what that 10:00 am snack was called.) sometimes someone in my family does something silly and becomes a "Fool of a Took!" Great topic!

if I am in a discussion with someone, about something tragic in the news or personally, it always seems to get to the question of "why does this happen", or "I wish those kinds of things weren't in the world to deal with", something along those lines. Many times I will find myself, I guess you could say semi-quoting, Gandalf from the FOTR, as he was talking to Frodo at Bag End...... "So do all who live to see such times. That is not our choice. The only thing we can do is decide what to do with the time given to us" That is actually a very inspiring statement to me; has always stuck with me, moreso than any other quote from LOTR's. A close second would be Treebeard saying "They come with fire, they come with axes... gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning. Destroyers and usurpers, curse them";j ust haven't found a conversation yet to use that in

I also love "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future". How true for modelling world! Models used to have 5`8`` minimum for height and then came Kate Moss and changed the future of modeling. Now shorter girls can do the catwalk.

It really is wise. And in the movie, Ian McKellan really brought it to life and said it perfectly. I just love that line. if I am in a discussion with someone, about something tragic in the news or personally, it always seems to get to the question of "why does this happen", or "I wish those kinds of things weren't in the world to deal with", something along those lines. Especially from FOTR. That movie was exceptional. The forming of the fellowship always gets me... Frodo: I will take the Ring to Mordor! [pause] Frodo: Though... I do not know the way. Aragorn: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword... Legolas: ...and you have my bow... Gimli: ...and my axe. Boromir: You carry the fate of us all, little one. If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done. Elrond: Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the fellowship of the ring. Pippin: Great! Where are we going? ...as does: King Elessar: "My friends, you bow to no one!" Also, lots of wisdom from Gandalf (well, duh!): Gandalf:Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many. Gandalf: A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to. (tell that to your boss just before they fire you for tardiness) Gandalf: There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power. (this is very true for all power-trippers you meet in real life)

It's not a precise quote, but I've been saying that for decades whenever I'm digging in my pockets trying to find something. And when I make eggs for breakfast, I find myself saying "Eggses it is!" When my daughter graduated from high school, the kid making the address began his speech with "I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." My daughter was all the way down on the stadium floor in a sea of caps and gowns, but even from way up in the bleachers I could see her fist raised in triumph. I got a great laugh out of your use of "concerning hobbits". I may have to start using that :-) Welcome to TORn, by the way!

We have a lot of deadlines in my line of work, as well as clients that aren't always fun..but fortunately my co-worker/husband saw the movies as many times as me... "What time do you think we have" and "I'm going to Mordor" are pretty handy ways to label certain projects! There are others, of course. I bet we still use at least one movie-line a week around here! Welcome to TORn -- anyone who can quote the appendices will fit right in around here. Make sure to check the LOTR movie board, if you haven't already, as we're doing a discussion of the FOTR appendices right now!

Some of the lines from the movies that I use regularly are: - When I see something odd/unexplained at first (such as a suspect e-mail or a traffic jam with no obvious cause) I say "What is this new devilry?"
- When I see people running (to catch a bus or whenever...) I say "Fly you fools!"
- Of course, like so many others, I use "My prescioussss" a lot as well.
- When my kids drive my nuts with ceaseless questions, I say "Give me a moment, for pity's sake." (the pity being for myself )
I always like this question because it reminds me to include LOTR in my everyday life. Thanks! Nuradar

Actually in my opinion anytime Billy and/or Dom appear you are going to find a funny moment. One personal favourite of mine, from the commentary, is when Dom is covering for Billy when Billy forgot whathe was saying. "I like eggs in the morning and bacon at night is that so wrong...... When I was 10 I used to eat worms." LOL I crack up every time I listen to it. And of course their whole disscussion about Gollum during the Forbidden pool sequence sends me into giggles everytime. I do love the white light moment though. :-)
What happened when Legolas and Aragorn road with Eomer in the van. Aragorn: Eomer, Legolas has his bow on my side of the seat! Legolas: Well Aragorn keeps slapping me while practicing his "heroic" poses. Eomer: Don't make me turn this van around.
