My Debts to TheOneRing.net
TORN may loom large in my chapter on official and quasi-sanctioned LOTR websites in The Frodo Franchise, but I certainly didn’t discover it when it was founded. Quite the contrary, I was not an early internet user. In addition, as I wrote in the preface in the book, I was one of those Tolkien fans who deliberately ignored the making of the film trilogy, not wanting to get my hopes up about the adaptation.
It was really only after I decided to write about the film that I ventured onto the internet to any real extent. That was in early 2002, and originally my project was to do an article, subsequently published in a film-studies journal called The Velvet Light Trap. By the way, that article has been quoted widely, but it’s out of date and has some errors. Best to avoid it and rely on the book instead.
Anyway, it was impossible to write about the film trilogy without exploring the internet, and it was during 2002 that I discovered TORN.
Once I embarked upon the book project, I knew there would be a chapter on LOTR and the internet. I knew I wanted to deal with New Line’s site, with Ain’t It Cool News, with TORN, with McKellen.com, and with some samples of smaller, fan-originated sites.
From the start, the four TORN co-founders were incredibly generous with their time and recollections. My first interview was with Corvar, on June 12, 2004. He happens to be a fellow Wisconsinite, so we met in a little cafe in Milwaukee. The second was with Tehanu, during my second research trip to New Zealand; she fed me a lovely meal on an incredibly stormy night in Auckland and then answered many questions. (I interviewed her a second time that November, on my third and final research trip to New Zealand.) The third was with Calisuri on August 29, 2004, during one of my three research trips to Los Angeles. A few days later I talked with Quickbeam and Asfaloth in L.A., while they were still editing Ringers.
I’m sure Xoanon would have been willing to let me interview him as well, but I decided it was not to be. With all the traveling I was doing, a separate trip to Canada to talk with him seemed just a bit too much. And speaking of too much, the text I was drafting on TORN was turning out to be way too long. I decided if I had yet another interview, TORN would take over the whole chapter. (I know, what would be the problem with that, right? But I got to interview Ian, too, and his webmaster Keith Stern! As it was, the internet chapter became two internet chapters.) But Xoanon was very helpful, answering questions by email.
Since The Frodo Franchise came out in 2007, TORN has been equally supportive in getting the word out about the book, mentioning it in news items whenever even a small excuse to do so arose. Links to entries on my blog of the same name have sent me a lot of hits. The fact that TORN and The Frodo Franchise blog were chosen as the two sites regularly linked on the recently added Shire page on Del Toro Films felt like a double honor—to be listed there and to be side-by-side with the premiere Tolkien website.
Tehanu paid me the ultimate compliment after reading my book: “Your account of TheOneRing.net’s beginnings and how it functioned gets it absolutely right. More than that, you capture how it felt to us at the time. Nobody else has managed to get enough of an understanding to do that.” As many of your will recognize, that passage became a blurb on the back of the dustjacket.
I quote that not to boost myself or the book, which I hardly think I need to do in this context, but to emphasize how much help I received from those incredibly helpful interviews. There’s no way I could have captured how working on TORN felt to its founders if they hadn’t conveyed their feelings to me. That my prose then synthesized all that interview material well enough to suggest the authentic early history of TORN pleases me more than I can say. Much though I hoped that my book would reach a general audience, the core groups that I hoped to satisfy were the filmmakers and the fans.
If I manage to get a project on the Hobbit and bridge films launched, this time you can be sure that I’ll be monitoring TORN from the beginning!

On August 20, 2001, Tehanu stumbled across my now rather infamous essay about Tolkien's mythology at Hollywood Jesus and posted a link to it here at TORn. LOTR traffic at Hollywood Jesus exploded, with tons of emails raining down on my inbox... and most of them negative! Two days later, Tehanu had to retract the link to the article with the disclaimer, "I wish I had read through" to the end...
I was relatively new to the Web at the time, and had not yet learned how ill-advised (or rashly provocative) comments can come back to haunt you in a big way; I also had not yet developed into a serious academician, and so had not realized that I was supposed to be a Tolkien "expert"... complete with all the ramifications. I was just a website editor with very specific ideas about Tolkien, and thought I would be merely humored as such. I didn't expect to be translated into Spanish and Swedish, you know!
Thankfully, a great many of TORn's regulars -- Tehanu included -- stuck with me through the development of HJ's vast coverage of Peter Jackson's films, a publishing legacy of which I am very proud, and through the polishing of my ideas (and manners). Tolkien in Perspective, now out of print, was the culmination of that early project, and does fully articulate the thinking behind that early essay. (The last surviving copies are available through HJ Books.)
As my later books came into print, Xoanan was kind enough to give Peter Jackson in Perspective the highest recommendation possible: "A must-read!" The book is still the only comprehensive single-author examination of Jackson's film on the market.
As I hit the convention circuit and entered my "public speaker phase" (nods to Little Big Man here), the ORCs in Pasadena and Burbank have to rank with the best of experiences, as I had the pleasure of finally meeting Tehanu, Xoanon, Altaira, Mr. Cere, and Balin (bless his soul) among many others.

Though I had been a Lord of the Rings enthusiast since I was a little girl, I never dreamed I would one day grow up to illustrate something that has become such an important part of my life.
I stumbled upon the TORn website years ago before the first film came out, and was delighted to meet a number of people from TORn at a San Diego Comic Con where several of my publishers were promoting my work. I stopped by to watch the TORn crew set up before the convention officially opened, and Garfeimao recognized me and brought me into the fold. She kindly introduced me to other TORn types, and some of the cast as well, who were also hanging about before the show, including Sala Baker and Lawrence Makaore. Then I was taken aside and introduced to Richard Taylor and Daniel Falconer.
This generosity was not only most appreciated, but the kindness and interest of the people at TORn helped to bring my work to the attention of some of the official LOTR licensors, who later hired me to do work for them. So, not only was it a great experience to meet so many new people here, and to have found so many new friends, but being a part of the TORn family has helped me to realize a lifelong dream: to illustrate scenes and characters from The Lord of the Rings. Coolest job ever!
The LOTR fans are the most generous and friendly fans I have ever met. Downright hobbity. Good food, good conversation, good fun. Of all the conventions I have ever attended, it is the LOTR conventions that I most WANT to attend. They feel like family reunions.

that I love your book, so I'll not go into detail here again
The chapter about TORn was one of these I particularly loved; as interesting as the whole book is, it was so exciting to read about the site where I spend so much time and to see names there and in the fanfic chapter I knew not just from the film business world, but names of normal people. It was just great to see them being mentioned at all, and in such a lovely way!
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

What can I say? We, including and especially myself, are proud and honored to be working with TORn...and have no doubt: those involved are the elements that make it truly special. Passionate, respectful, and insightful...they embody the best of Tolkien...and I am so thankful to be part of their Fellowship. However, unlike the Fellowship that came to an end with the crowning of Aragorn, our Fellowship will continue...and grow...and be the wellspring of friendship for us all.
While I've worked directly with Chris, Mike, Deleece, and Larry...let me say: the whole is certainly more than its parts...though its parts are indeed mighty.
My friends of TORn...I will continue to follow you my brothers and sisters, my captains, my kings...

TORn has been such an important part of my Tolkien “experience” in the past decade, and I still visit at least once every day that I’m online. You help define Fellowship for all us fans and have given us such a wonderfully supportive community.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Xoanon at a fan convention and enjoying a wonderful dinner in Queenstown with Tehanu. I’ve met many TORn staffers online and at conventions like ORC, ELF, and the Fellowship Festival, and I appreciate the behind-the-scenes efforts of everyone I haven’t yet met but have heard so much about. Thank you so much for your dedication and continuing hard work. My experiences as a Tolkien fan, author, and professor are all the more enjoyable because of TORn.
I’m looking forward to DragonCon to renew old friendships and make new friends, and I’ll “see” you online.
Here’s to another decade (at least)!

Oh, that map was such fun to do! My pleasure absolutely! I've been a Tolkien fan for about 100 years, so all the in-jokes made complete sense, and it was nice to play with images of TORn messageboards as places in Middle-earth. And all the while create a coherent piece of artwork. An excellent project!

Also, thank you once again for the amazing TORn map. I still can't quite take in the fact that I have the original. I'm continually amazed and humbled that you and so many people here would do something like that. It means more to me than I can ever express in words. A hundred more THANK YOUs come to mind.
Questions! I have a few to start with:
1) Regarding your artwork, I was wondering if you have a favorite medium to work in. I imagine sketches are primarily done in pencil? But, what would you rather break out and start working with? Or, do you enjoy variety.
2) Is there another Red Carpet sketching tour in your future?

And yet it's not surprising. As I wrote somewhere once, Tolkien was no Luddite... and he certainly made use of the printing press, didn't he?

Pencil is of course very good for sketching, but to develop a pencil sketch to the point where I'd call it a finished artwork takes quite some time. Far quicker is watercolour. I recently taught a painting workshop in which I did three complete paintings in a short time - only possible because I was using watercolour. So I guess watercolour is my favoured medium - it's fast, and used properly can be quite dramatic. (I can upload small images of a couple of those paintings in one of these posts, if you like, if I can figure out how - I'm a newbie at this posting business... ;-)
Having said that, I was working on some advertising artwork yesterday, using acrylic, and got a great result resonably quickly.
And for sketching, one shouldn't overlook charcoal - this can be very expressive, and because there's no colour involved, it's necessary to make the most of light and shade, tone. Great discipline!
As for another Red Carpet Sketching Tour, I'd LOVE to do one - it was EXCELLENT! It's on the horizon - we're just figuring out whether to try an Autumn one instead of Spring. Come along!

Thanks for the compliment! I've been painting in acrylic for the last few days - it's artwork for an advertisement - and it's been good to explore that medium a bit more. I can't "let it out of the box" yet, until the ad campaign is up and running, but I'll put it up on my website when I can.
Landscapes... hmmmm, they look great painted, SHOULD be painted - and I do them now and again, when something really grabs my attention. Some dramatic lighting or whatever. But I have a number of other images in my head that are insisting on being painted first, and also a calligraphy exhibition coming up in August. These things, plus the need to do commercial jobs to pay the bills, keep my painting output frustratingly slow.
But I'll get there. I have a series of oil paintings in mind (some more NZ wildlife, and one from Maori legend), and also another large watercolour of a wellington scene. Can't wait to get started!

Can I put in a plug for a Red Carpet sketching tour for autumn 2010? (That would be March/April 2010). Some of us are kicking around the idea of visiting NZ around that time, and I would definitely love to do the sketching tour. Yep, an Autumn Sketching Tour would be great - and I think that's the way the organisers are leaning. Otago (in NZ's South Island) is incredibly beautiful at that time of year, so I'd love to go back and paint then. And the Valaquenta - what a GREAT interpretation Alassëa Eruvande has written with this! Wow! I only played a small, making a nice visual effect for it with the parchment and font, but I think the piece itself is the real gem. My Tolkien-geekiness was showing through, in that I could easily have re-inserted all the Tolkien names into the text, having read The Silmarillion so many times, even though the last time was quite a few years ago.

Hello all! I'm Alicia; I've visited TORn many times, but only now joined the message boards to say Congratulations!! Read through all of the messages on this thread... how nice to see all of the lovely people & comments! Everyone keep up the great work! As for the next Sketching Tour... I want to go so badly I can taste it!! Don't know when I'll get back to NZ, but I will, and permanently this time. In the meantime, I just bought a sketchpad & pencils today, & have done 2 truly awful sketches. Daniel - help!

I use good quality watercolour paper for most of my maps. Mostly Fabriano Artistico EW, Cold Pressed. Though I may switch to Arches - I've just bought a load of it, because it can take a lot of wetting and re-wetting, without losing it's crispness.
Having said that, the map which Bilbo is folding up in the FOTR prologue was done on brown wrapping paper! It was nice and brown and crinkly and easily foldable - but probably an archivist's nightmare!
And thanks for your comments about the onion painting. I loved doing that, and I'm looking forward to doing some more oils like it. I did several quickish studies first, trying the methods of various different Old Masters, and eventually settled on a technique which uses quite a lot of medium as a vehicle for the pigment, especially in the early and background layers. I'll try to attach an image of some progress shots of this painting below...

The easiest way to post a pic is to upload it from your hard drive. (Edited to add: I see you're already a pro at it, so disregard what's below unless you're in to reading dry instructions. )
When you're writing a post, there's an area to upload attachments at the bottom, which includes pictures:
- With your cusor in the "Browse" box, find the pic and double click on it to get it into the "Browse" box.
- Click on the "Inline" box next to the "Upload attachment" button
- click the "Upload attachment" button.
- do this for every pic you want to attach.
- put your cursor in your post where you want the pic to show up
Then, in the upper right there's an icon that looks like a picture of a mountain. Click on it, select "Inline attachment" then selct your pics. Repeat to imbed more pics.
FYI, for asthetic reasons and for those who might have slow connections, our picture posting guidelines are below. I can't wait to see what you select.
the maximum size of any picture posted should be 525 wide x 400 pixels high (or a better measure is: 210,000 pixels squared - width x height), but no wider than 670 pixels. The maximum file size per picture should be 50k. The cumulative file size of all pictures in one post should not exceed 250k (5 pictures of the maximum filesize of 50k, 10 pictures of a filesize of 25k, etc.).

Yep, doing art as a full-time profession is SOOOO different to that rat-race life before that! I could never go back. No day feels like work. Mind you, no day feels like a holiday, either. Every day's a workday and every day's a holiday, too - it's just a kind of continuum, in which weekends are meaningless, and I never remember what day it is.
I like my Cape Cod map too! I'm looking forward to doing some more real-life maps - NZ's Marlborough Sounds would be really nice.

Okay, that as a backdrop at rhe 20th Anniversary Party would be pushing it a bit too much I think--
But I just want to say, THANK YOU Xoanan, and all the other three, for what a wonderful gift you've given us. You have no idea. And I can't imagine how my (attimes) crotechedy self keeps "This place alive" but I will try to help!:)

Here are a couple of those watercolour demonstration paintings I mentioned. The first one is painted with a limited palette of only two colours: indigo and burnt sienna. So you have to make the most of tone and composition:
And for this next one, I put myself on the spot, asking "What shall I paint now?". "Do some figures" they replied, and "A beach scene". I also wanted to demonstrated a graded wash, so I painted this picture, very quickly, and with no initial sketching beforehand - just straight from my head onto paper with paint. Fast and immediate, necessarily loose:

I was fortunate to meet you at ORC 2006 and you autographed one of my favourite images of our hobbits! I was completely enchanted by this perfect respresentation of their personalities! But your enthusiasm made taking this home with me all the more meaningful. I have it displayed with my Sideshow figures of all 4 hobbits :) I still smile every time I stop and just enjoy it.
So many of our stories begin so quietly and personal; but they've led us all here where we can share our excitement and joy. Ten years! It's hard to believe.

Congratulations!
I can't imagine the last ten years without TORn. You've welcomed us, informed us, and entertained us, and in the process forged a community that crosses all possible boundaries, uniting seasoned fans and newbies alike, showing us the common Tolkienian ground we share.
TORn has been the place I sent my students -- those few who did not already make it a daily visit -- and my own first stop for news and updates. I've appreciated the times you've called on me for interviews or featured news about my scholarship, speaking engagements, and classes. It's been a pleasure to make memories with the TORn staff, whether they are of sparring soldiers on horseback in Toronto at the Gathering of the Fellowship or singing Hobbits in Pasadena at ORC.
The great news is that TORn has just hit its stride. More movies are in the making. More events are planned. More books are underway -- in fact, I recently signed a contract to write a new work of my own on Tolkien, and I look forward to sharing news and updates with TORn -- and more Tolkien fans are yet to be made. Despite the great ten years you've given us, I have no doubt that the best is yet to come. Like fine wine, TORn is aging well.
So thank you, my friends, both for all you've accomplished and all you will do. I look forward to spending the next decade with you. Well done, indeed! Congratulations!

We all have grown a lot through the years. I'm amazed as how Tolkien's work has spawned such an incredible comraderie among those who are touched by his sensibilities. I think TORn is a reflection of those. I've found so much tolerance, encouragement, loyalty, humour and inspiration here; and I've seen it in your work at Hollywood Jesus, too.
So here we are sharing a 10-year Anniversary. It's a pity those who predicted a falling-off of fan enthusiasm after the films were finished were so WRONG! :D I think it's grown even stronger. Deep roots and all that.

At the moment I'm flooded with jobs for an advertising company in Auckland - each job is different from all the ones before it, and each has its own challenges. Then I must start work on another set of replicas of the Treaty of Waitangi documents for permanent display in our national museum in Wellington, Te Papa. I also have some other bits and pieces of which I can't speak, for confidentiality reasons, as well as some paintings which will soon demand to be painted, and a calligraphy exhibition in August.
And that's about as far ahead as I can look - I've kinda got used to the feeling of not knowing what's around the corner...

..erm, in my art of coarse.
I confess, the whole idea of 'sketching' in watercolor boggles my mind. When I think of sketching I think of succinct lines, not of shadows and shapes. Yet, the use of shadows and shapes helps one's mind fill in the details that aren't necesarily there. You've broadened my perspectives in that respect. Thank you!
Now, if you will, indulge me with a few favorites of my own:
Bag End in Ink washes - Daniel Reeve
Talk about shadows and shapes. I love that this entire composition is done in different shades of the same color. I can't stop looking at all the details accompished with such simplicity.
My other fav:
Tuatara - by Daniel Reeve
This pic also doesn't seem to have too many different colors, mostly different shades of brown and green. Yet the feeling of shadows and dapples of light is so strong you can almost see the fern fronds moving.

I was hoping to find you here. Now the party's complete! I'm so thrilled that you're going to be a part of the new films. I can't imagine what it must be like to work with both GdT AND PJ. The creativity and excitement must be palpable at time.
Come to think of it, this is sort of a 10-year anniversary for you, too... or around-abouts 10 years. It seems like a flash. And here we are again. TORn was here to speculate and articulate about how LotR would be done, and we're doing the same thing for The Hobbit. How cool! We live in such amazing times!
Thanks for always being so generous and gracious, sir. I can't wait to see your work again. You really do represent so much of Middle-earth for me now because of your handiwork.

Well, I'm certainly honored to have been a part of that spirit, and to be perceived in that way, too. I honestly can think of only one instance over the years in which my sometimes outlandish ideas have been met with outright hostility; and in the company of fanatics (yes, fans), that's pretty remarkable -- something that truly distinguishes Tolkien's work above his peers. If only actual religion could be approached so peaceably...

From one newbie to another, welcome aboard TORn, Alicia!
Of course, I've met you in person on the Red Carpet Tour - but you didn't mention sketching then. Until you can manage to get on a Sketching Tour, start with simple subjects, and just try to capture the light and shade. Squint your eyes at whatever you're looking at, to reduce it to patterns of dark and light, and draw that. Try it with charcoal, 'cos you can get nice darks and cover areas quickly - and experiment with smudging it with your fingers for smooth shading.

Thanks for the advice! "Start with something simple"... so I guess a tree probably wouldn't be the ideal first thing to sketch...?  No, I didn't mention sketching on the RCT... I only ever sketched 2 things, really, & would have been mortified to show them to you.  No visual artist am I!

I have always enjoyed Native American Spirituality. Actually i was just trying to find in one of our two 'People's Guide to JRR Tolkien' books for you, an essay concerning the wonderful similarities between the elves and our native Americans, but i can't locate it presently.
Yes, TORn has so much to offer. I am still amazed after the years. And seeing newbies are great. It is fun seeing them in there own ways adjust and contribute. So many bright spirits.

Happy Anniversary, TORN, from Lady of Mist, who used to be on this site nearly EVERY day, starting in 2002 until the 3rd Oscar Party in 2004. A special hello to all the TORNettes who swooned in Estrogen Island! Although I've been absent for such a long time, I have fond, wonderful memories of hanging out here and connecting to all of you who love LOTR and the films. Discovering TORN was one of the best things that ever happened --- no drug could ever deliver such a high. I met some cool people through the site and had many good times. Some of us still get together and and do things (like going to the Renaissance Faire and Pirate Festival). I miss the excitement the films generated and the anticipation what the next film would bring. LOTR led me to do some fun things these past 5 years, such as visiting Ireland and Scotland and connecting to my own culture and heritage, and changing careers. I went back to school and now work in a library!
So, I raise my glass and toast to the TORN folk (a special hello to Tehanu!).
Now, can I have a piece of cake?
And, Aragorn, you're still my hero of heroes. Swoon.....

Thanks weaver - and the Valaquenta treatment was a pleasure. I actually quickly made a new font for it; Shire Upright, based on my Shire Regular. Made a few changes, added a couple of fancy letters, et voila!

Yep, I finally signed up, and can lurk no more! It already feels like I'm a TORnSib, having been in involved in the map project, and now these anniversary celebrations - as well as the films, of course.

When creating something like this, I have to bear in mind the overall composition all of the time. From a distance, the viewer needs to see the overall tone changing gradually from the sunlit side of the Hill to the shaded side. So the details must be drawn/painted not only so that they make sense "locally", but also so that they fit comfortably within the broad sweep of the whole thing. Quite a balancing act, when you're relying on the white of the paper for the highlights, rather than being able to paint them back in - I guess it just comes with experience. Though I do remember having to go back and darken some previously painted parts of this, once I saw the overall tonal range developing. As with a lot (all) of paintings, you need to step back and study the whole composition as it progresses - musn't lose sight of the big picture! With this sort of painting I enjoy depicting things by, well, not painting them! Like the gate here, which isn't painted at all - it's there only because bits of whatever's behind it have been painted in.

This is actually quite a big painting, painted with a palette knife. Up close it's loose smears of paint - it gets more photographic the further away you view it from, of course. You're right, there aren't many colours here. As I usually do, I tell most of the story in tones: the all-important light and shade.
Here's the tuatara is on my wall (I like the imperious, almost disdainful gaze of this guy, and painting him larger than life increases his majesty and presence), and also on the cover of the Systematic Biology journal from a year or two ago.

As I've said, TORn is actually a great source of information for those of us who work on these films - but it would steal too much of my time to make a habit of lurking (love that word!). The Valaquenta you made is really beautiful, thank you for taking the time to make it. And it is great that you take the time to talk to us these days. As you say in a later message, how do we get things done. Well this weekend, I don't. I've spend almost the entire weekend behind the computer. There is so much to read and so much to see (and to scream and jump around when something great shows up again, your work brought tears to my eyes (there went another 10 minutes without being able to do anything)).
I have one small question. I heard from a friend that you first wanted to make the maps for Narnia in blue tones. Is that correct? I would have loved that, now they looked a bit to much like the ones for LOTR. And I think the blue tones would so much have fitted in with the ice-age.

Here's the Narnia map I made first. The 100 Year Winter. Always Winter, never Christmas. Narnia the way we first encounter it.
But it wasn't to be. Although Andrew Adamson liked the map, he said it celebrated the Witch's view of the world; so.... could we lose the snowflakes...? Arrrggh!! And that's why the official version is the brown one you're familiar with.

Speaking of Real World maps, I have a question.
With maps of real places, there must be some consideration for scale and measurement to accurately portray distance. So with all these Fantasy lands you map, how do you figure distance and relations to each other? Tolkien, at least, did some drawings that showed where things were, but you still had to go in and add distances, how was that researched or did you just sort of wing it? And with some of the other fantasy worlds you worked in, those with even less reference points, did you just create the lands and distances and directions that were incorporated into your maps?

I volunteer for this film festival and ran into John Noble there tonight, since he's our special guest this weekend. Anyhow, I mentioned I was Staff for TheOneRing.net and he actually remembered me from ORC when he was a guest there. I mentioned to him that this weekend was the 10th anniversary for TORn and he said something about how is such a great place, a big place. I'm hoping I can get some more comments from him tomorrow, since I'm sure to see him when he goes to the theater, I'm the venue coordinator after all.

Hey Garfeimao, great to hear from you!
Luckily, others before me have researched Tolkien's lands, which as you know were well described by JRR and adequately mapped by Christopher. So where necessary, I made use of the research done by Karen Wynn Fonstad and Barbara Strachey and published in their books.
The clues for Narnia were a bit sparser, but were still there to be found. And in both Middle-earth and Narnia, it's handy to be able to use leagues as ths scale key, since they're a handily ill-defined measure! :-D
I remember discussing the dimensions of Skull Island with Dan Hennah, and making sure everything was placed at appropriate distances - as well as giving the island a true position on the Earth (and in doing so I was careful to avoid plonking it on the epicentre of the Boxing Day tsunami off Sumatra).

One of the best lessons I learned was this: Paint what I want to paint, the way I think it should be painted, rather than being swayed by the advice of others. (For "paint", substitute "draw", "sculpt", whatever). Because this way you get the undiluted essence of what you do; the strongest result. And the fact is, if you like what you paint, some potential art buyers out there will too. Some people's aesthetic tastes and art opinions will coincide with your own, and others won't. 100 people might walk past your work in a gallery, but the 101st person might fall in love with it and buy it.
So, in a nutshell, be true to your own artistic vision.
After that comes the more mundane, practical advice that others are probably more qualified to give, since mine was not a standard path into and art career, but things like having a website helps, getting the right people to see your work, arranging yourself a lucky break, etc... ;-)

I so admire your work - I am for ever in awe of its beauty, and your craftmanship, or should that be your penmanship
My map hangs proudly over my fire place, and is much admired by visitors.
Thankyou for being here for the Anniversary celebration and for all the good wishes.
Im still hoping that there's a book in the works from you, showcasing your calligraphy and art - hopefully we will will see one in the future? I have had my fingers crossed for one for ages
Will you be doing anymore Sketching Tours around Hobbiton and the LOTR sites?
and is there any chance of a Calligraphy Master Classes or exhibitions in Australia or overseas? Have you done any already with your work from LOTR and other movies?

Thank goodness for the conventions and gatherings that give us a chance to meet. ORC 06 was such a great experience, and I was so thrilled to have the chance to see you there. Your "Unsung Heroes Of The Lord of the Rings" was perfectly timed as a place to feed my need for another look at Tolkien's characters. I think they draw me to the story as much as (if not more) than the story itself.

but, the map now has a history ... a story behind it - I love maps just for that fact - they have so many stories to tell, just for the fact that they're maps.

I like the way you phrased it--we've all certainly had many different, and often meandering, paths to get here.
When I think back over the past decade, I'm remembering this weekend all the anticipation for the LotR films, never knowing that I'd return to a love of writing about film because of them. I didn't think I'd make it to New Zealand (and now I've been three times, and I'm looking forward to another trip when The Hobbit arrives). I never thought I'd get a chance to speak at fan conventions, much less meet some of my favorite actors there. I read Tolkien's manuscripts at the Marquette archives and was in awe of all the scholarship contained in one place. I can't even count the number of amazing Tolkien fans I've met in person or online, which is the best part of fandom. And now I'm trying to share some of my excitement for Tolkien's works with my students, so the path will continue long after I'm too old to figure out how to "post" on whatever new media come along. Ten years ago I had no idea where my Tolkien travels would take me, and when I look forward to the Hobbit films, I wonder just what all will come from our shared love of Tolkien in the next decade.
So, however we've made it here, I'm very glad we all have, and this weekend is the perfect time to catch up with everyone. It's a lot of fun to read the boards, so thanks for getting us all going to post this weekend!

Someone else posted the photo of my framed map, in my office, which I enjoy every day. But here I want to post one of my favorite photos from my Red Carpet tour of March '08 (so long ago, now!), when I got to thank you in person for your excellent work -- and not just on the map! What a wonderful morning that was for all of us.

This is the best, isn't it? I think there's something about Tolkien's works that brings us together--the nicest people I've met are "Tolkien people." Whether we love the films or prefer the books, or however we enjoy the many adaptations of our favorite literature, we share a common bond that often becomes the basis for some fantastic friendships. And it's great this weekend to read all these posts from people all over the world who are equally enthusiastic. Very cool.

And I'll add a shameless plug for my upcoming book, since you mentioned my earlier one. I'm excited about this book because I got to write about hobbits again. Tauris is publishing Hobbits: The Many Lives of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin about this time next year. I guess you can tell what it's about! The fun part for me was seeing, reading, and attending so many adaptations. "Research" is truly a wonderful thing!

to disclose the artist of the other map on my wall. She has been shy about it being so humble but i wanted to you to know about it after you noticed it.
It is the work of a very special person in my eyes. It was Elven's wonderful color version of Middle-earth of the Third Age. It really is beautiful work.
It was a gift from her after i obtained a signed copy of 'The Children Of Hurin' for her one chilly morning in NYC. She did not have to do that. She is most gracious spirit.

What a glorious weekend this has been! What a cause to celebrate......
I turned on my computer, looked in my Inbox and found none other than mega-talented director Guillermo del Toro, Oscar winner Richard Taylor, and the most brilliant movie effects/design team in all of Moviedom singing to me. Well, singing to all of us on TORn. It made me feel very proud and connected to a whole world of people I have loved for years.
FORGED BY FANS, FOR FANS. Lest we forget.
The roots of this amazing tree have taken hold deep in Arda, watered and nourished by fans who really love this stuff (like me).
It boggles the mind to think that 10 years ago Xoanon was fishing around for New Zealand photos with the assistance of a vibrant, plucky young woman named Tehanu. The mischief they sought to create was going to satisfy the biggest itch in Tolkien fandom, thought they did not know it at the time. In comes Calisuri, busy and brilliant, trying to make a clean website that's going to attract a worldwide audience. That ain't no easy trick. In comes Corvar -- magical prestidigitator of servers and bandwidth, the man who makes the damn thing actually WORK. Bring in a host of writers, special guests, contributors, artists, and Admins, all of them volunteering their time. Giving without expecting anything back, just the joy of the ride. All of them forging a special place on the Net that would eventually shake the foundations of Hollywood. Have you read the press we've gotten over the years?
No other Fan-driven endeavor would make a bigger mark on a high profile film franchise. Or would so effectively use the power of new media to further a community of people who love literature. The great stories of Professor Tolkien. Peter Jackson loved Tolkien as we did, so he became enamored with our quickly growing community as well. What a unique combination of attitudes -- literary, bookish, Tinseltown, blockbuster. Some kind of magic happened right under our very noses.

10 years passes in the blink of an eye the way Ents reckon time. Seems to be true for Human time. I can't believe it has been a whole DECADE of blogs, spy reports, opinion polls, crazy red carpet interviews, struggles with a film studio, sneak attacks by Andy Serkis at fan conventions, two omnibus books of articles, and three hellzapoppin' Oscar Parties. Clean sweep of 11 Awards..... How the room EXPLODED when they won Best Picture! Oh, and there was a little thing we did called "Ringers: Lord of the Fans," which encapsulated 50 years of Western popular culture and its response to Tolkien.
Of all the fan communities ever conceived -- look what TheOneRing.net has wrought! So I congratulate the Powers that Be on a wonderful day. Happy Birthday, Mister Baggins. Happy Anniversary to you all and congrats on a fantastic thing.
I'm grateful to Xo for bringing me on board. And especially being entrusted to write for you from all those wonderful places. These people are gold, these Ringers. I have met the kindest, most creative folks over the years across the globe, and I acknowledge you all. You've been so kind to me, and shared so much great energy, shown such patience with me, and made this youngling Ent feel alive again. THANK YOU!
I look forward to volunteering and contributing again over the next few years, if you'll have me. Humbled at all times by the gentle affection TheOneRing.net has for this group of Hobbit-fanciers and Elvish ladies and sturdy Gondorian princes, I'm so glad to be part of it. Thank you sincerely.

Thank you for your own work on this site, Cliff, and all of the work that you have done for the fandom. I am a frequent participant of gatherings in SoCal and your enthusiam is always infectious. I will never forget the premiere of the Ringers film, either- it was a pleasure to see that I had made a brief appearance in it!

That pose is one of the things that really draws me to the painting. They're fascinating creatures. I was also drawn by the light and shadows of the NZ bush. I had the opportunity to walk some of the footpaths around Tane Mahuta this Christmas time with my husband, and it's really awe-inspiring. You captured the feeling of being there perfectly.

Try charcoal for a much quicker result! Just to get the feeling for light and shade.
With a pencil sketch it's too tempting to stop after you've drawn outlines of things and most of the paper is still white. But a good percentage (half?) of the page wants to be covered in marks, in order to give some depth and tone. With charcoal, that's much quicker and easier to acheive. And because it's less exact, you're forced to be looser and more "painterly".
And yes, it'd be great to see you on a sketching tour. And (thinking out loud) I'm sure Red Carpet tours will need my assistance on The Hobbit Premiere tour, sketching or not - but I'll still bring along my art kit....

I'm still hoping that a book might be possible too. Maybe the chance will come with The Hobbit - I'll try to get in early this time.
Red Carpet Tours are keen to run another Sketching Tour, probably next Autumn - I'll announce it on my website with plenty of advance warning.
I've started sussing out the calligraphy world (after working in a vacuum for years), so yes, classes and exhibitions are on the cards. I now edit the Calligraphers of Kapiti newsletter, and will run a small local workshop this year - and things will move onwards and upwards from there....

I work at home, and my home is on a back section, down a long driveway, away from the street. It's quite a big property (by suburban standards) with many trees and lots of bush. So I have a quiet room, birdsong outside (especially the tui, a beautiful native bird with an INCREDIBLE vocabulary of sounds), hardly any street noise, trees everywhere I look - all in all, it's a pretty conducive environment for creating art.
My only distractions are self-imposed: having a coffee (I have a fantastic espresso machine), getting outside for some exercise, mowing the lawn, chopping firewood, cooking meals (I like to cook), etc.
As I said earlier, no day feels like a work day!

Greetings ElanorTX, and thanks for the compliments!
On the film, several of us (Alan Lee, Grant Major, Dan Hennah and myself) agreed on all the various aspects of what the hobbits' alphabet would look like, and how Bilbo should write it. This included having accent marks over ALL the vowels (though I followed a self-imposed rule to restrict it to sounded vowels, or the first of the two vowels in a diphthong, etc, so that the text wasn't quite so cluttered). It certainly gave the Shire writings, the Red Book, etc an old-worldly, rustic charm. And it gave a tenuous link between the tengwar writings of Middle-earth and those written perhaps in some "newer letters, sometimes used now for the Common Tongue" (this is simply my justification - the fact that things are written in Latin characters at all is simply to allow accessibilty to audiences, of course).
So for the writings of some of the other races, I retained the most Tolkienesque of the various accent marks: the triple-dot (or triadic mark, as I started to call it) over the A, to maintain a kind of continuity. So you'll see that triple dot in my merchandising versions of Gondorian words like Faramir, Aragorn, for example, whereas Rohirric ones drop it but use Tolkien's acute accent over some of the Es.
And that's the only reason. It's purely decorative, giving a Tolkien flavour, and to put a kind of stamp of belonging that says "this is from the LOTR movies".

Congratulations on ten years! The success of TORn shows that there's not that much difference between the "scholarly" and "fan" communities when it comes to Tolkien: scholars are fans, too, and there are "scholarly" fans who make massive contributions to our understanding of Tolkien. There are also major contributions--in gaming, art, armor, costuming--that all are better off when they cross-fertilize each other. Thus by putting everyone in touch with everyone else, TORn has helped bring about what people 50 years from now will be calling the "Golden Age" of Tolkien.
And this would not have happened without TORn's perfect blend of being both fun-loving and professional. From the look and feel of the site to the way that the community keeps itself from dissolving into flame-wars or snobbishness, TORn is, to me, the model approach for getting more enjoyment and knowledge out of a topic. LOL! I just woke up bleary eyed, straight to the computer, came to see what was happening here - and promptly fell off the chair (and there's no smiley to explain how I feel)
Thankyou Daniel for looking over the photos *squeeeeee!!!* -* tries to retains composure*....
The map is on a 'blush' coloured handmade paper.
And it was done using pencils - a 1980 set of Rex Cumberland Derwents and Prismalo soft Caran D'ache Watercolours pencils.
I didnt do much of an underwash as I didnt have any means to keep the paper sretched to dry.
The inks are Winsor Newtons, and Indian Ink, using an Italic nib, scroll, and copperplate.
This is the biggest size map Ive done - the further along it got, the more aware I was of making a mistake - some days I just had to walk away rather than put the ink on the paper. I would look at your maps for confidence to get the pen and ink back on the paper. I love doing maps - and of all the maps Ive seen, I can stare at the maps you have done for ages - they are truly beautiful! You have been a great inspiration! For that I thank you sincerely!
And I also notice this huge amount of creativity and talent you have taking the water colours further, and the ink pen drawings -
I so hope that there are still some more maps of ME to see in the future from you - but I'll leave that there - its on my wishlist.

I get your news leter so I will eagerly awaiting any news if you make it over here to Oz - or I make it over there to NZ!
This time around I hope New Line have you at the top of the list for a book - and also quite a bit on the Extended Editions about anything you do (not that we know if you'll do anything of course ) - but Im putting my 10 cents worth in now - there can be no true adventure without a map! and THAT Dwarvish map is such an important piece in the story!

He took a big chance, trusting that some dedicated internet-based Tolkien fans could produce respectable encyclopedia articles on fairly obscure subjects (leaning on one another for advice and critiques, to be sure). It was an honor to be given that responsibility, and a thrill when this work was praised, as for example in these comments from Kelley M. Wickham-Crowley's review of the J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia for vol. 4 of Tolkien Studies:
Tolkien's contribution to Sir Mortimer Wheeler's report on excavations at Lydney Park is known to many through Shippey's comments in The Road to Middle-earth, but [dna] does a lovely job of both updating the archaeological assessments and of incorporating Tolkien's blend of Celtic religion, myth, and poetic inspiration when considering Nodens in "Report on the Excavation ... in Lydney Park, Gloucestershire."
The opportunity for a dozen TORNadoes to stretch themselves in this manner would not have arisen if not for the wonderful quality of the discussions here, and Prof. Drout's appreciation --which he shows again in this message-- of what fans can offer to Tolkien studies.

I've thought of you so much, and of how this wouldn't be a complete party without you here. Oh, Dear Sir... you are missed and still very much a MASSIVE part of TORn for me!
I've loved your guidance at all of our conventions and cheered whenever you appeared.
The very first thing I read in TORn was a link from the "official" site to your Green Book series "Where the stars are strange". It's still one of my favourite things to read that carries me into this magic journey we've all taken together through Tolkien's world via Jackson's eyes.

And it's perfect that you're here to share it with us. You've been so great about keeping the fire of our passion alive with your honorable book on Howard Shore's music for The Lord of the Rings and the heroic effort to give it the reverie it deserves. You've done so much to keep ME excited about the films and the music... and I can't WAIT to finally dive into your work :D

What a gracious compliment :) Tolkien really has crossed over all forms of "entertainment"; to include text, games, film, music, television, etc... but most profound to me is the social interaction that has come about. A qualitiy of Tolkien, to be sure, is to communicate, share, inspire, and maintain. I find that at TORn every day.

I echo your thoughts about the joys of making art. It is work, but it is work that is a pleasure. There is no greater privilege. And to be able to enjoy this great privilege in the friendly surroundings of home and green gardens...I cannot expect more of this life. Putter in the garden by day, draw and paint all night. What a happy life! I can't decide if it's all hobbit or all elf!
I do hope to see you again someday soon!

That was just about the coolest thing ever! It's 12:43 am and I just woke Mr. Losse up to see it. He wasn't quite as thrilled as I am, but that's just the sleep talking. Thank you all so much for taking time out to celebrate with us. This is one of my favorite "places" to be and some of the best people to be with. It's so wonderful that you're all a part of it, too! I have to admit that I'm giggling through my tears. I'm just an emotional wreck. I just can't say it enough, so "thank you, thank you, thank you!"

I was wondering how big the LoTR commemorative trees got in Willowbank Park in NZ that were planted in 2004 so I emailed the Friends of the Tawa Bush Reserves and Richard Herbert there was kind enough to take a few photos to show how much they've grown. He said they're about 12-feet tall - about double the height than when they were planted. Yay! I can't wait until I make it to NZ someday to see how big they've grown!
