Omg, that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard! The people in it irritated me a bit, even the judges at the end; I don't like it how they told her that "everyone was against her at the beginning or whatever". But her voice was stunning, and I found myself mouthing along with the words (and tearing up a little bit, too!) That was so beautiful!

I admit you do get a lot of wannabes, but Susan is not a teenager trying to be cheeky and snark, she's a 47 year old woman, commonplace, humble, stepping on an international platform for the first time. He can atleast show her some respect as a person dammit!
Forgive my irritation, but I'm speaking as someone who's experienced being prejudged. I think Simon needs to be hit on his head because something seems to be loose in there. Plus, it's a bit too bloated and he's too full of himself. Sometimes I wonder if he isn't really losing it *hint: Lil Rounds is his favourite*
As for Susan, I would respect her even if she'd croaked her way through a laughing audience. Such a sweet lady with an honest to goodness personality  Come to think about it, almost the opposite of Simon (in more ways than one)

I watched that last weekend and was astounded, the audience were on their feet and it was obvious that the judges were gobsmacked, that lady can sing!
Another act which had a similar reaction were a father and son "dance" combination Stavros - they were unexpectedly hilarious, Simon had also written this pair off which is obvious from his very bored expression when the act started - he was very surprised though a few seconds into it!

And I think the clip is a lesson to all. Because I think everybody does have somewhat the same feeling when you see Susan the first time, and all the expectation weren't too high for her. Not that I believe she is a loser or something like that, but she just looks so ordinary that you don't think she can sing so fabulous as she does. I think the lady in the jury (I don't even know her name) puts it the best to words "it was a privilege to hear Susan sing and a lesson on prejudice to all".

He's such a jerk, and she completely makes a fool of him, in her sweet, unassuming way. I agree, even if she couldn't sing at all, I'd still admire her so much for being such an authentic person.

While she certainly seemed authentic, I can't help thinking that she had plans to be the next Paul Potts, and may have deliberately dressed plainly and acted frumpy in order to follow in Paul Potts' footsteps. We eventually learned Paul Potts at one time had a budding opera career, and did not quite come out of nowhere. On the other hand, he had pretty much given up on that career when he went on the show. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Boyle has more history in music than we learned in her first appearance. Nevertheless, she certainly plays frumpy well.

Great minds think alike.
Why does this clip make me cry so much? Here's a link with the lyrics printed. Maybe it's the combo of the lovely voice and the words of the song that fly in the face of the obvious stereotypes we all have of each other.
I think I've found my new hero. Anyone who can wipe that smarmy look off Cowell's face has my vote.
I'm definitely buying her first album.
I hope they don't dress her up too much...I like her the way she is.

I haven't followed any of this stuff, so when I heard them talking about Paul Potts, I was scratching my head and flashing back to the 1970s and thinking of the evil dictators category.

And I didn't mean to imply that she is a fake, any more than Potts was a fake. I have since heard that she has a learning disability and spent years caring for her ailing mother -- again, it all sounds quite touching and I don't mean to imply that it is fake. It just sounds familiar to those of us who are familiar with Potts' story -- and similar to Neil E. Boyd's story on year three of America's Got Talent as well.

Nothing we haven't seen a million times in the Idol auditions -- it's part of his shtick. Once he heard her, he complimented her and gave her a yes, so what's the problem? Simon usually knows what he's talking about musically and in terms of whether someone has a realistic chance at a career in music -- more so than any of the other judges on Idol, anyway. Well, OK, so he likes Lil, but tonight he basically said he wouldn't have saved her from elimination on Idol. (But why they saved Matt I have no clue!)

Yes, definitely. Actually, I thought she looked quite like Colm Meany -- oops, is that too non-PC? I don't really understand what all the fuss is about, though -- I don't care for that style of singing, and I don't think she's that special.

They saved Matt??? I'm in India and performance night is Thursday... results night is Friday... so, well, you get the point...  Ahh, anyway, don't worry about it. Now I can bug my mom during the show with "I know what happens next" 
About Simon, I kinda have a love-hate thing goin on for him. He is after all the most honest and perceptive judge, and he tells it like it is, which is something I admire in people. On the other hand, he sometimes prejudges people, which is a personality trait I personally detest.
I know he gave Susan a yes after she sang, but what's the big deal in doing that? He had to do that right? He couldn't possibly have said no. Now if he hadn't done that cocky eye-roll while she was introducing herself, which was essentially, a "yeah right, I can't wait to see you make a fool of yourself", that would've been something

saw this lady sing. I was shown the video last night at work and was just floored. I don't watch Idol at all, I see all I need to see in the promo's for it whenever it comes around. But this lady blew me away. Hope she succeeds. I also then got treated to the Paul Potts video from a couple years ago? Another amazing voice and story.

I've never even seen the show, but I heard alot about someone being really good, and I was just going to ignore it... but then I saw the link and thought "Aw, heck. Why not?" and I watched the vid.
I would have never guessed! It was so beautiful! I wanted to yell at the people screaming because I couldn't hear her, but then... If I had been there I would have probably screamed too. All-in-all... Susan Boyle is awesome!

I'll agree that she could have, perhaps, taken a little more nuanced approach, but she was so much better than most of the people you hear on those shows. She has a very raw talent, and could be a professional with the right coaching.
(The Colm Meaney comment was spot-on. I knew she reminded me of someone!)

It didn't occur to me that not everyone sees the show on the same night.
I do know what you mean about Simon tending to judge books by their covers, but to be fair, American Idol at least is supposedly looking for the "whole package" in terms of marketability as a pop star, of which appearance is a large part. To his credit, Simon eventually comes around if the vocal talent is big enough, even if he needs a lot of convincing (e.g., 29-year-old Taylor Hicks and his gray hair). Plus, on Idol, the contrast between Simon's snarkiness and Paula's niceness adds spice. ;-)

My daughter showed me this clip last night. I heard her talking about a " group cry " while she was ' skyping ' with friends. They had all just watched it together and were all crying with happiness for her. She showed me what they were crying about and I was absolutely blown away. I applaud her courage for standing there knowing she would have to suffer through the same cynical looks and snarky eyebrow reaises she suffered all her life, but she stood her groud.
Bravo to her ! I was very heartened to hear my daughter and her friends all praise her with many shouts of " Ohhh..she's SO cute !! " They just loved her .
I thought it was funny and cute that she was all set to just walk off straightaway after singing. LOL ! It was like." O.k. I did it, there you are. " She has my deepest admiration and respect. I wish I had a sliver of her singing voice !
There's something of everything here, The Shire and the Golden Wood and Gondor and kings' houses and inns and meadows and mountains all mixed.

Using chest register without any head resonance for high notes not only sounds harsh, but causes vocal cord hemorrhages (e.g., Jordin Sparks). I really don't understand why anyone likes that sound! It's like being shouted at. To me, it's as bad as nails on a chalkboard!
