Blessed... [In reply to] Can't Post

...would make a much better Thorin, he's got this deep booming, commanding, authoritative way of speaking & acting...or even Beorn. Either role, he'd be awesome.Wink

Look at you! Being all organized and stuff =) [In reply to] Can't Post

Seriously, thank you for this. It's especially useful for me since I haven't been here through the whole discussion. It is nice to get a quick summary of the ideas that have worked their way around the board.

Captain Jack: Who has a sonic screwdriver?
The Doctor: I do!
Captain Jack: Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, "Woo, this could be a little more sonic."?
The Doctor: What, you've never been bored? Never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?

*Motown's 50th don't ya know.

No really it is great that the old thread was finally cut loose. This one is by far more readable and exciting.

Casting [In reply to] Can't Post

some fantastic suggestions here.......particularly Brian Blessed as Balin and Martin Freeman for Bilbo.

I'd like to add another name to the mix.....Lee Boardman for one of the dwarves....but as for Bard the Bowman, how much further does one need to look?

Richard Armitage of course!

Richard for Bard...Yes Yes Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree with you totally Mulubinba...there can be NO OTHER choice! Richard Armitage was BORN to be a Tolkien hero!! He is a great actor and very versatile, and as the photos prove, his looks are perfect for the role!!

Born to be Bard! [In reply to] Can't Post

You're so right, Mulubinba, Mrs Bard, Flodwyns and everyone else dying to see Richard Armitage as Bard - he'd be utterly perfect! He does grim and noble better than anyone...

everyone's talking this RA guy [In reply to] Can't Post

but too me the guy that i see in these photos is too young to be the beaten down, seeing ill-omens in everything, grim character from the books. too much like a young ranger for my tastes.

Too young?? [In reply to] Can't Post

RA is not far off 40, weathertop - just the right age for a warrior in his prime. And (judging by his latest appearances on our TV screens) he does "grim and beaten-down" better than anyone I've seen.

But remember, though Bard is at first seen as a grim and beaten-down seer of ill omens, he soon proves to be much more than that. He is a far-seeing and inspiring leader of men, courageous and skilled in battle, noble in his dealings with the dwarves, forgiving and generous! No wonder his men proudly take the name of "Bardings" after he becomes King of Dale.

WOW!!!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

As much as a fan of the whole Tolkien world I am; I'm not much on keeping updated about things in the "real world", and had no idea The Hobbit was going to be made into a film. Fantastic!!!!! Something to look forward to for sureCool I spend most all of my computer time on a boxing forum and that's about it; so I'm glad I joined this site to get in touch with what's going on. Apologies if this is a somewhat rambling postEvil

never knew... [In reply to] Can't Post

of the existence of Richard Armitage til I heard him mentioned here....not exactly who I saw playing the role, but I'm sure he'd do a fine job...I never imagined Bard as being very 'noble' looking...Armitage looks like he'd suit Thranduil the Elvenking even better. I really like the look of Kevin McKidd or Clive Owen...but Richard could work.

and LEGIONTX....your post was anything but rambling...very short & sweet actually...yup...December 2011, 2012, you'll see 'The Hobbit' on the big screen...very excited to see it, as are we all...welcome.

Sylvester McCoy for Bilbo! [In reply to] Can't Post

In many of the stills from LOTR I've often thought Ian Holm as Bilbo bore a strong resemblance to the actor who played the seventh Doctor Who. The interesting thing is that throughout his time in that series he was at the bottom in my list of favourites in the role of everyone's fave time lord. That was until his part in the US tv movie starring Paul McGann in the role. This taught me that he was a perfectly good actor, but that it was the series (Doctor Who) that had somehow gone downhill at the time, and not Sylv.

Once made up as Bilbo, Ian Holm to me looks very similar to McCoy. I think Sylvester could carry it off with ease. He would certainly make a great hobbit anyway, but with his resemblence to Mr Holm, I think he'd be perfect.

Oh, and Brian Blessed was born to be in a Tolkien based film. He should be signed up immediately, and then they can decide what he plays when they're ready!. Any hobbit or better still, dwarf, would be a walk in the park to him. My wife is reading his autobiography and he grew up in my area of England. Yorkshire to be precise, and between Barnsley and Rotherham to be even more precise. My home town of Hoyland is a stone's throw away from his stomping grounds of Goldthorpe, Mexbrough, Wentworth and Hoober Stand ( a local 'folly' or monument).

Exactly! [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad you liked the pics, Eruthurin. (Who wouldn't???)

Here are two more of RA looking grim, intense and very Bard-like...

Anyway, this was certainly the way I imagined Bard as looking every time I read The Hobbit... and it was also exactly the way I pictured Aragorn when reading LotR!

Re: Richard Armitage as Bard. [In reply to] Can't Post

" Then Bard drew his bowstring to his ear. The dragon was circling back, flying low, and as he came the moon rose above the eastern shore and silvered his great wings.

'Arrow!" said the bowman. 'Black arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and always I have recovered you....... go now and speed well"
