I can't find the actual schedule of talks and/or general fun online at the moment...what time do things start on Friday? I haven't made plane reservations yet and am thinking of flying in Friday morning instead of Thursday night. I could get a flight that arrives at the airport at 9:30 (if you can count on the airlines nowadays but anyway)... a.s.

a.s. (and others): I've uploaded the entire programming schedule for Mythcon 39 here. It's basically final at this point, so you should be able to refer to it to determine which papers, panels, and other festivities you want to attend, where they are, when the meals are, and so forth. There could be one or two small tweaks, maybe, but more than likely not. The opening time slot is Friday at 2:00 PM (mine, hahae). And it goes through noon on Monday. A Friday morning arrival would probably be fine (depending on your risk tolerance for the performance of the airlines, as you mention). I'm getting in Thursday afternoon — no choice, really. Given my range of choices here, any Friday arrival would be too late for my own paper! One addition I will point out is Carl Hostetter's paper on Friday at 3:00 PM, right after mine (and in the same room). He had sent in a proposal, but it went astray and he never ended up on the schedule. I ran interference on that and Jessica luckily got him in.

... those desiring to “pretend-heckle” are going to have to get there fifteen minutes earlier now. I said when I posted the schedule that there weren't going to be any major changes — boy, was I wrong! I just got a revised copy of the schedule. Apparently, some of the university's meal breaks have changed times (or something ...), and a major reorganization of parts of the schedule was required. I've attached the updated schedule. My paper now starts at 1:45 PM on Friday, and some of the papers scattered about earlier in the previous schedule have now been moved to Monday.

I hear Wendell is sending more of his collection, and Ted Nasmith is donating some signed calendars. I may toss in some of my preciouses too; it depends on what I want to part with for the sake of charity, or the Society. The Star Trek novels that had been at about the last 5 Mythcons were donated to the San Jose library book sale, alas.

I wish I could go to this year's event! Unfortunately, I've blown all my money and more on 4 other conferences this year and can't possibly fit another one in. I hope all of you will take lots of pictures and give us a full report of all the fun you're going to have. And watch out -- your picture may end up on visualweasel's blog! What can I do? I see N.E. Brigand everywhere because he goes to absolutely everything! Although -- I will note that I have never seen him at the slash fanfic conference I've attended for the last 3 years. But you, a.s., it's been too long, and the same goes for you other Marquette conference-goers that I first met years ago. Must do something about that. And of course I'd like to meet some other Tornadoes as well! But I suppose I shouldn't complain, as I've already travelled around quite a bit this year. (If I knew where to put this , I wouldn't have to say: NEB, just kidding back at you of course!).

Slash fanfic conference? I'd never thought such a thing does exist at all! Do you know if there are any papers of these conferences online available? The very first fanfiction archive I stumbled over years ago was a slash archive, and even if I'm reading mainly gen nowadays, there are still a few slash authors I'm reading. So you did make me a bit curious what has been discussed at these conferences!
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

I seem to remember that they hold a Tolkien conference every five years or so. "Our" conference was in Septemer, 2004, so that's 4 years next month. I'm going to really try to get to Kalamazoo next spring. It's been way too long since I've seen you!

Just a thought. Well, OK, we couldn't probably hold a "con", but we could hold a "field trip" and all go at the same time. And then party in the evening. Or skip the field trip and just, you know, party in the evening? LOL a.s.

and when the Map exhibit came to Chicago, we tried to add on a trip to Milwaukee. Unfortunately, Matt Blessing was out of town the weekend we chose to Moot in Chicago. So if we're really going to do a trip to the archives, we'll first contact Matt and find out when he's available. The trip has to include a stop at the Mars Cheese Kastle so drogo can get his cheese curds . But we can also go to Wheaton College in the Chicago suburbs, which has a lot of Tolkien and CS Lewis artifacts, including the desk where JRRT wrote The Hobbit (and LOTR, I think, but not so sure of that). And if we do a trip, we'll be sure to choose a time when the weather is nice. We got lucky last year in early November, but you never know with winter in the north. Milwaukee gets more snow than Chicago, and it's usually colder.

Mythcon Day 1: So there we are, having dinner with Wayne & Christina...

Hammond and Scull, that is. This has been awe-some, realizing I'm sitting around in classrooms or in a dining hall with not only other TORnfolk, but these greats of the Tolkien literary world as well! Visualweasel's presentation on the etymology of certain words was excellent and fun, with a cool powerpoint. I have only one complaint about it: it was too short. I'll let him tell about the happy-face Nazgűl. We - a.s., NEB, visualweasel, myself, WonderBroad I think, and lots of others, including a few well-known names - also attended David Bratman's talk on the women of LotR who Candice Fredrick and Sam McBride either grossly misunderstood or competely ignored when they wrote " Women Among the Inklings: Gender, C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams": Lúthien, Erendis, and Andreth. And after that, Carl Hostetter's talk on Elves and free will, which included some not-yet-published quotes from Tolkien, and which I think I actually understood (stuff like that usually flies right over my head). Then buffet dinner in the dining hall. NEB, a.s., Christina and Wayne, a lady whose first name I can't remember (her last name was Sabo) and I sat down together. The authors live near where my hubby's family is from in western Massachusetts, so we chatted a bit about the economics of that area (and which shopping malls are good). Plus other stuff, like publishers, and the Tolkien Encyclopedia... NEB can probably recall a lot more! Drogo, unfortunately, had his flight delayed for quite a while due to the thunderstorms in the area, but he did get there for the Planetarium show this evening. Kristine Larsen took us on a stellar journey through Tolkien's Music of the Ainur, and legends of the Sun and Moon, and trying to locate his constellations. At the end, she told us to check beneath our seats; NEB found a wad taped to his, so he won her biography of Stephen Hawking! We ended with chanting the Song to Elbereth ("...Thy starlight on the western seas"). She had other goodies for the rest of us, such as Sirius Black's family tree with a star chart to locate the names. a.s. and I left then, but the others stayed for more festivities, such as a performance by the Lord of the Ringos. I'll be there next on Sunday, so I'll leave it to the others to fill you in on tomorrow's happenings!

We've been having a wonderful time. I got back a little while ago after Day 3 and the banquet - you'd never believe how such an erudite bunch can "play with their food"! Apparently making a "food sculpture" that has something to do with the guest authors' works is a standard event. The one I remember best was the plate with two opened butter pats and two pieces of overly-done beef: Magarine Burns (in honor of guest Marjorie Burns). There were also puns on "Perilous Realms": perilous 'shrooms, and pear-less realms...and others... Hopefully visualweasel will post the pic of whatever was on that one plate that he took a picture of, it looked like Mr. Bill to me... Oh, yes, we did get a chance to do a little bit of heckling at him, when his cell phone went off in the middle of Wayne Hammond's talk on Tolkien's daily life as an Oxford professor. (It was actually his wife's phone, and he didn't realize it was on.) The Mythopoeic Society gave out four awards (finalist lists here); the winners were Catherynne Valente, J.K. Rowling, and Tom Shippey (who sent in nice acceptance speeches), and Diana Glyer and David Bratman, who were in attendance. I couldn't stay for the Lord of the Ringos - had to get back home. But I did pick up a CD of Ted Nasmith singing his own songs! And he presented a slide show which included many works we'd never seen before, many of them showing how he had progressed through the years as an artist, as we'd see same scenes painted at different times in his life. And, yes, it was great fun hanging out with a.s., NEB, drogo, and visualweasel and all the cool Mythopoeic folks!

And the icing on the cake: an ongoing friendly difference of opinion between two scholars on the subject of free will. Not that I'm interested in that subject. I'm still at the hotel waiting to spend a day with some family in this area before getting on the plane (missing closing ceremonies). Full report and hopefully pictures tomorrow. But I can't let today go by without letting everyone know what a wonderful bunch of people attended Mythcon. NEB outdid himself in the poetry competition, drogo made us all proud being one of the PTB at the awards banquet (and I'll never look at the phrase "playing with your food" the same way again!) and visualweasel really is an independent scholar and gave a great presentation and moderated a panel with the best of them! I just followed in their wake, but had a great time. More later. a.s.
