Mythcon 39 -- Aug. 15-18 -- New Britain, CT Can't Post

This coming Tuesday, July 15, is the last day for online registration for the 39th annual conference of the Mythopoeic Society, to be held in mid-August. After that, registration will only be possible at the door during the conference. For the first time, this year's Mythcon will be held in New England, at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. Mythsoc is an organization dedicated to "promoting the study, discussion, and enjoyment of fantastic and mythic literature", with a special emphasis on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams and the other Inklings. The group publishes the literary journal Mythlore (usually twice each year).

The theme of this year's conference is "The Valkyrie and the Goddess: The Warrior Woman in Fantasy", and there will be a track of papers as well as panel discussions on that subject. In addition, there will be a variety of papers on Tolkien, Lewis, Williams and other fantasy. Here is a sample of the announced papers: "The Forgotten Women of Middle-earth"; "Tradition in Rowling, Tolkien, and Lewis"; "Tolkien and Oxford University"; "Feminity and Arachnitas in Tolkien's 'Shelob'"; "Realistic War in Tolkien's Battles"; and "The Feminism of LeGuin's Earthsea Books". There are also a variety of other activities and entertainments, this year including one I particularly want to see: a planetarium show on the astronomy of Middle-earth, led by Kristine Larsen, who was written some fine papers on that subject.

There is also a banquet where this year's winners of the Mythopoeic Fantasy and Scholarship Awards will be announced. Among the nominees for adult fantasy are Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay, who got his start working with Christopher Tolkien on The Silmarillion. The children's fantasy nominees include J.K. Rowling, for the entire Harry Potter series. The Inklings-scholarship nominees include Diana Glyer's The Company They Keep and The History of 'The Hobbit' by John Rateliff. And one of the general fantasy scholarship nominees is The Shadow-Walkers, a study of monsters in Grimm, edited by Tom Shippey.

There will be two guests of honor: Marjorie Burns, author of Perilous Realms: Celtic and Norse in Tolkien's Middle-earth, and Sharan Newman, author of the novel Cursed in the Blood as well as non-fiction including The Real History Behind 'The Da Vinci Code'. Other notable Tolkien and Inklings scholars attending this year's conference include Verlyn Flieger, Janet Croft, Arden Smith, David Bratman, Mike Foster, Christopher Gilson, Joe Christopher, Diana Glyer, Wayne Hammond, and Christina Scull.

I know of at least three TORN contributors besides myself who will be attending: visualweasel, drogo, and Aelfwine. Anybody else?

I *am* tempted, but [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been watching and mulling and thinking it all over, and am still undecided!

I'm not walking all that well yet. Do you know if all the daily events will be in one general location?

Also, I would not be staying in a dorm room, but in a hotel off site (if I go). So that would mean taking a cab or other transport back and forth daily (which is fine if I can get close enough when dropped off). Do you know the campus? Is this feasible for a person still using a cane? It's not walking per se that is difficult, even climbing stairs is OK, but long distances are still OUT. Totally out.

Usually the activities are confined to a few adjacent buildings. [In reply to] Can't Post

That was my experience last year in Berkeley, CA, and the year before in Norman, OK: all the panels and papers were in one building, meals were next door (and dining together is a big part of the Mythcon experience) except perhaps the banquet, and the evening usually started with a feature event in the panels/papers building, before everyone retired to the dorm building for lighter entertainment and conversation. But anyone with questions should check out the Mythcon web page. If you're not planning to stay on campus, then there's probably no need to register in advance. In my experience, meal tickets can be purchased on the first day of the conference -- except possibly the banquet. Again, e-mail someone at Mythsoc.

Yes, I'll be there! And here's some more info ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Coincidentally, I just posted some additional information on my blog, here. Some of this comes from a preliminary copy of the schedule which I think N.E. Brigand may not have seen, so stop by and take a look at some of those details.

I've also got a little teaser up about Mythcon 40 in 2009. Wink

Regarding your question about whether the events will all be in more or less the same place, the answer is yes. As N.E.B. said, this is usually the case, and it'll be no different this year. Registration and all the conference programming will take place in Copernicus Hall, roughly smack dab in the center of campus. Dining will be in Memorial Hall, just a building or two away from Copernicus Hall (to the west). The two dorms (not that you'll be in one of those, evidently, but just in case) are Sheridan Hall and Barrows Hall (aptly named!). The former is just east of Copernicus Hall, while the latter is a few buildings south of Memorial Hall. It seems to be a pretty small, tightly knit campus. I wouldn't think you'll have any trouble. And besides, I'm sure a ride would be there for the asking from any number of Mythies at just about any time of day or night. Or if you and Entmaiden end up sharing, so much the better.

Hope to meet both of you next month!

I'm not sure how many things I'll be able to attend; my Dad's birthday is that Saturday, and with him being recently widower'd, my family will be spending that day with him.

But I'd like to get to events Friday night and on Sunday! I'm a good hour's drive away. If anyone is hard up for a place to stay, give me a holler, we've got a "guest room", if you don't mind pics of fairies on the walls!

great! and a question about costumes [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't wait to meet both you and dernwyn! This is the first time I've attended Mythcon.

I notice something about costumes on the "progress" note at the Mythcon 39 site. That word sends shivers up and down my spine, and not enjoyable ones!! Crazy Are costumes optional? One assumes that of course they are optional by regulation, but the real question is "does everyone wear a costume?" One does not want to be a snot.

LOL

I've got a month to think of something or back out fearfully.

No need to worry: costumes really are optional [In reply to] Can't Post

From my experience (limited, admittedly; I haven't been to one of the really big Mythcons on the west cost), only a very intrepid few will be in costume. I myself am certainly not so intrepid, and will not be in costume.

Well, unless you count my typical air of arcane linguistic pretension as a costume. Wink

I'll have to miss visualweasel's paper since my flight doesn't get in till late Friday afternoon, alas, but I'll be around till Monday. Thanks for the plug, N.E.--I will be the one giving out (some of) the awards for fantasy and scholarship. Mythopoeic Awards Administrator is one of the hats I wear for Mythsoc.

The Final Schedule [In reply to] Can't Post

a.s. (and others):

I've uploaded the entire programming schedule for Mythcon 39 here. It's basically final at this point, so you should be able to refer to it to determine which papers, panels, and other festivities you want to attend, where they are, when the meals are, and so forth. There could be one or two small tweaks, maybe, but more than likely not. The opening time slot is Friday at 2:00 PM (mine, hahae). And it goes through noon on Monday. A Friday morning arrival would probably be fine (depending on your risk tolerance for the performance of the airlines, as you mention). I'm getting in Thursday afternoon — no choice, really. Given my range of choices here, any Friday arrival would be too late for my own paper!

One addition I will point out is Carl Hostetter's paper on Friday at 3:00 PM, right after mine (and in the same room). He had sent in a proposal, but it went astray and he never ended up on the schedule. I ran interference on that and Jessica luckily got him in.

I said when I posted the schedule that there weren't going to be any major changes — boy, was I wrong! I just got a revised copy of the schedule. Apparently, some of the university's meal breaks have changed times (or something ...), and a major reorganization of parts of the schedule was required. I've attached the updated schedule. What can I do? I see N.E. Brigand everywhere because he goes to absolutely everything! Although -- I will note that I have never seen him at the slash fanfic conference I've attended for the last 3 years.

But you, a.s., it's been too long, and the same goes for you other Marquette conference-goers that I first met years ago. Must do something about that. And of course I'd like to meet some other Tornadoes as well! But I suppose I shouldn't complain, as I've already travelled around quite a bit this year.

(If I knew where to put thisWink , I wouldn't have to say: NEB, just kidding back at you of course!).

Slash fanfic conference? I'd never thought such a thing does exist at all!

Do you know if there are any papers of these conferences online available? The very first fanfiction archive I stumbled over years ago was a slash archive, and even if I'm reading mainly gen nowadays, there are still a few slash authors I'm reading. So you did make me a bit curious what has been discussed at these conferences!

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

I seem to remember that they hold a Tolkien conference every five years or so. "Our" conference was in Septemer, 2004, so that's 4 years next month. I'm going to really try to get to Kalamazoo next spring. It's been way too long since I've seen you!

We've talked about that [In reply to] Can't Post

and when the Map exhibit came to Chicago, we tried to add on a trip to Milwaukee. Unfortunately, Matt Blessing was out of town the weekend we chose to Moot in Chicago. So if we're really going to do a trip to the archives, we'll first contact Matt and find out when he's available. The trip has to include a stop at the Mars Cheese Kastle so drogo can get his cheese curds Wink.

But we can also go to Wheaton College in the Chicago suburbs, which has a lot of Tolkien and CS Lewis artifacts, including the desk where JRRT wrote The Hobbit (and LOTR, I think, but not so sure of that).

And if we do a trip, we'll be sure to choose a time when the weather is nice. We got lucky last year in early November, but you never know with winter in the north. Milwaukee gets more snow than Chicago, and it's usually colder.

Mythcon Day 1: So there we are, having dinner with Wayne & Christina... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hammond and Scull, that is. This has been awe-some, realizing I'm sitting around in classrooms or in a dining hall with not only other TORnfolk, but these greats of the Tolkien literary world as well!

Visualweasel's presentation on the etymology of certain words was excellent and fun, with a cool powerpoint. I have only one complaint about it: it was too short. Wink I'll let him tell about the happy-face Nazgűl. Laugh

We - a.s., NEB, visualweasel, myself, WonderBroad I think, and lots of others, including a few well-known names - also attended David Bratman's talk on the women of LotR who Candice Fredrick and Sam McBride either grossly misunderstood or competely ignored when they wrote " Women Among the Inklings: Gender, C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams": Lúthien, Erendis, and Andreth. And after that, Carl Hostetter's talk on Elves and free will, which included some not-yet-published quotes from Tolkien, and which I think I actually understood (stuff like that usually flies right over my head).

Then buffet dinner in the dining hall. NEB, a.s., Christina and Wayne, a lady whose first name I can't remember (her last name was Sabo) and I sat down together. The authors live near where my hubby's family is from in western Massachusetts, so we chatted a bit about the economics of that area (and which shopping malls are good). Plus other stuff, like publishers, and the Tolkien Encyclopedia... NEB can probably recall a lot more!

Drogo, unfortunately, had his flight delayed for quite a while due to the thunderstorms in the area, but he did get there for the Planetarium show this evening. Kristine Larsen took us on a stellar journey through Tolkien's Music of the Ainur, and legends of the Sun and Moon, and trying to locate his constellations. At the end, she told us to check beneath our seats; NEB found a wad taped to his, so he won her biography of Stephen Hawking! We ended with chanting the Song to Elbereth ("...Thy starlight on the western seas"). She had other goodies for the rest of us, such as Sirius Black's family tree with a star chart to locate the names.

a.s. and I left then, but the others stayed for more festivities, such as a performance by the Lord of the Ringos. I'll be there next on Sunday, so I'll leave it to the others to fill you in on tomorrow's happenings!

Frown

We've been having a wonderful time. I got back a little while ago after Day 3 and the banquet - you'd never believe how such an erudite bunch can "play with their food"! Apparently making a "food sculpture" that has something to do with the guest authors' works is a standard event. The one I remember best was the plate with two opened butter pats and two pieces of overly-done beef: Magarine Burns (in honor of guest Marjorie Burns). There were also puns on "Perilous Realms": perilous 'shrooms, and pear-less realms...and others... Hopefully visualweasel will post the pic of whatever was on that one plate that he took a picture of, it looked like Mr. Bill to me...

Oh, yes, we did get a chance to do a little bit of heckling at him, when his cell phone went off in the middle of Wayne Hammond's talk on Tolkien's daily life as an Oxford professor. Angelic (It was actually his wife's phone, and he didn't realize it was on.)

The Mythopoeic Society gave out four awards (finalist lists here); the winners were Catherynne Valente, J.K. Rowling, and Tom Shippey (who sent in nice acceptance speeches), and Diana Glyer and David Bratman, who were in attendance.

I couldn't stay for the Lord of the Ringos - had to get back home. But I did pick up a CD of Ted Nasmith singing his own songs! And he presented a slide show which included many works we'd never seen before, many of them showing how he had progressed through the years as an artist, as we'd see same scenes painted at different times in his life.

And, yes, it was great fun hanging out with a.s., NEB, drogo, and visualweasel and all the cool Mythopoeic folks!

it was fated that I would survive Mythcon!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

And the icing on the cake: an ongoing friendly difference of opinion between two scholars on the subject of free will. Not that I'm interested in that subject. Wink

I'm still at the hotel waiting to spend a day with some family in this area before getting on the plane (missing closing ceremonies). Full report and hopefully pictures tomorrow. But I can't let today go by without letting everyone know what a wonderful bunch of people attended Mythcon. NEB outdid himself in the poetry competition, drogo made us all proud being one of the PTB at the awards banquet (and I'll never look at the phrase "playing with your food" the same way again!) and visualweasel really is an independent scholar and gave a great presentation and moderated a panel with the best of them!

I just followed in their wake, but had a great time.

The happy-face Nazgűl [In reply to] Can't Post

I’ll be writing up a detailed conference report in the next day or two (and I'll post a link to it here), but as to the happy-face Nazgűl, I had made the observation that one early explanation of the word wraith (in John Jamieson’s Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language) was a “guardian angel”, and to prove (as if it needed proving) that this wouldn’t have worked very well for Tolkien, I popped this up on my powerpoint slideshow:

Not very scary, but perhaps more disturbing. It was good for a laugh — as I’d intended. Tongue

Maybe I should make this my new avatar.

pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a few pictures I took with my phone (what a 21st century thing to say!!) I forgot to pack my real camera.

This is dernwyn and drogo going into the banquet hall where they got to play with their food in the interest of Mythcon tradition:

This is dernwyn and NEB waiting to listen to one of visualweasel's talks, this one a panel discussion with other eminent scholars (and a good job he did moderating, it must be said!!):

This is drogo late in the evening in the Hospitality Suite, where people just hang out after the day's events are mostly over (you can't send Mythies to bed early, it seems!):

And this is NEB in the Hospitality Suite, too, just hanging out with fellow Mythies including one with a camera phone! :

I'm sure there are better pictures, but this is what I have!

Cool

I plan to send a more detailed report to the RR...when I can. I was sort of hoping NEB would start and I would just comment.

Thank you for this; it gave me a chance to check out the excellent presentations I'd missed! There is a lot of good stuff at these conventions.

BTW, is there any particular reason why your "trilemma" link goes to the Isle of Lewis? Not that I'm averse to reading about that fascinating place's history again, but I don't think C.S. ever lived there...

Thanks for calling this to my attention. Sometimes Blogger cuts off links after special characters. In this case, the link was to "Lewis's trilemma", and it cut off everything after the apostrophe. I think it's fixed now, and the Wikipedia entry gives a good summary of the argument. I'm glad you enjoyed all the rest of the report too.
