Welcome to the 'Unexpected Party' chat... blog... thing Can't Post

Like you, TORn will be following the chat and looking for those little nuggets of information that we can chew over and debate for the next few months... maybe years! We'll also be bringing you speculation from the TORn staff on "what it all means."

Feel free to respond to our blog and add thoughts of your own!

Thanks for this TORn and maegwen Smile

I'm soooooo excited right now... so that's another link I need to keep refreshing over the next few hours. It's 10:48 PM here in India, and what a night this is going to be... a night to remember Cool

Crows and Gibbets! What is The House Of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll around on the floor with their dogs! You are but a lesser son of greater Sires.

"O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas."

"It was Sam's first view of a battle of Men against Men,and he did not like it much. He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he was from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace..."

A purist's Hobbit film... and a very vague Bridge Film! [In reply to] Can't Post

My summary would be that GDT definitely wants to keep to The Hobbit book- talking animals, 13 dwarves, Beorn, idiosyncracies in the plot- he wants to keep them all! He obviously really loves the original story.

Also it seems like all the big decisions on the film 2 story are still to be made in the process of writing. It's a big gamble but should make an exciting next few years of rumours and discussion! Wink

Thank You for Clearing Up Problems with the Chat [In reply to] Can't Post

It was very confusing as to why some questions were getting through and come weren't. Granted, I'm new to online chats in the first place, so I figured I was doing something wrong. However, after reading your transcript, I felt less confused. Thank you for your diligence. Heart

I'm happy to help [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, have been somewhat tied up ;)

Did you try these instructions: http://archives.theonering.net/barlimans/instructions_pc_p.html

Do you use Zone Alarm fire wall? If so, you will need to make mIRC a "safe" program.

Glad to help [In reply to] Can't Post

If the transcript helped in any way, I'm glad.

The chat was very confusing, even for those of us who spend a great deal of time chatting. There was nothing you were doing wrong, I'm sure. :)

If zone alarm gives you any other problems [In reply to] Can't Post

Sometimes it decides that mIRC is a virus, silly thing. You just need to unblock IRC in your... IM settings, I believe. And you may need to make mIRC a "safe program"

This might not work for me [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think I have Zone Alarm - I was trying on my work laptop and it has McAfee. I did go through the instructions, but I get a "Software caused connection to Abort" message and I never get to a point I can join. I tried to check the McAfee settings and could not add irc to my safe list - the settings are all grayed out for me. However, it's not on the forbidden list!

I'll try to figure it out! thanks Smile

I submited a lot of questions, though the one I wanted most to be answered didn't make it, but I still got one question answered by PJ and del Toro!
Oh, I asked them if the 2 movies will be shot together. (I really hope they answered more about casting.)

Unexpected Party [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I must say I was a bit disappointed about the outcomes of the whole live chat. I was hoping to get to know more about the script and the cast.
Maybe it's all because of the ongoing lawsuit that they can't reveal much about the whole project yet, but it was like waiting for Santa and then just seeing him wave and being told that he'll come back another time...

Anyway, I still liked the idea of having this whole event!

I am completely stoked about the chat! [In reply to] Can't Post

Simply because they had taken time out of their busy schedules to come visit a bit, answering what they could since obviously this is the very beginnings of a great journey we're about to go on. Nice to meet the 'bus drivers' that are taking us along for the ride. I am just pleased overall!
A nice way to spend an hour!
Thanks WETA, ToRN and everyone else involved!!

Don't be disappointed. [In reply to] Can't Post

Most production decisions key off the script, so until it's actually written, most of the detailed questions simply can't be answered. I think the team was as specific as they could be for where they are in the process. I doubt the lawsuit has anything to do with it - they just aren't far enough along in the process to be able to do much more than answer in a general way. Of the few things they've settled on, some probably aren't under contract yet. And they were specific about one thing - there isn't a script - not yet.

That's not all bad you know. The script is the spine of the film. I imagine there will be some key decisions made before script is complete, and then we'll know about them in due time. Patience, young Hobbit.

Most movies we get announcements on have at least a preliminary script or outline, so it's very early days for The Hobbit. Just think how nice it is for these two world clas directors to reach out to fans. That'enough for me for now.

Well . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Since they picked the questions instead of a third-party, I don't know how much we could expect. Even then, they did take pains to explain as much as they could on certain points. I give the directors high marks for the effort made to include fans in any way.

I'm wondering [In reply to] Can't Post

why they had a Chat at such an early date, if they are that early in the Process. I was at first disappointed that we did not know more about the script...didn't exect them to have been casting yet, as the Lawsuits and the Writers Strike delayed by months many key particulars in the pre-production process.

How much of this is being sifted through and delegated by the Studios? Warner's/NL/MGM might think that by allowing the Creatives to reach out so much at this early stage it will "soften us up" for hard corporate decisions. On the other hand, PJ, knowing the power of the fans, might be enlisting GDT and doing all this as a stealth campaign to keep the Studios at bay in the future. Turning the tables back on them so to speak.
Another theory I have is that the more "public" aspects of this project at this point, the better, since it would make an impression on a Judge that this project is already too far in the public eye to shut down....

Personally, I think both of them were just stoked to do this, b/c they knew we were going crazy with no news and they are as sick and tired of the delays as we are. So even with the minimum of the creative process in place, they were dying to share what they DID know for sure. But if the Studios are in on this, propaganda is good:)

Anyway, am reading and digesting the Log now, I LOVE yr comments about the Dwarves in particular MrCere! Juat reading your comments gets me stoked! And it may not be as difficult to make 13 seperate dwarves "distinguishable and affecting" as it says, nor might it be an MAJOR departure from the book....I haven't finished my TH reread yet, but I remember:

--Thorin the noble (and it wouldn't be hard to make a Boromir-type character of him in Dwarf form: noble, then fallen, and finally redeemed)
--Fili and Kili, the youngest (brothers maybe? I can see them being made the most jolly and Gimli-like, but they do not survive, so it might be really affecting to see a Fred Weasely-type thing going on here; I think GDT is capable of pulling this off)
--Bombur (he might be difficult, you'll have to cast a heavyset actor, and he must not be pitiable b/c of his weight--or GDT can change the weight thing altogether. He might be the most difficult to pull off)
--Oin and Gloin (soldiers, the loyal leuitenants, to Balin--pure soldiers, grim and warlike, and if possible, Gloin shoul of course look like Gimli--same style hair, armor, clothes etc)
--Balin (maybe Thorin's second in command? His major-domo and with a ":younger brother/lesser noble" vibe, as befits a future Lord of Dwarves--Moria)
The rest of the dwarves, I'm sure Fran and Philippa--the REAL writing geniuses of the bunch, IMO--can invent great new personalities for, it's excusable IMO.

I am sure Our Four can pull this off ( I will call the writing team that--Philippa and esp FRAN are in ! WOOOOO HOOOO!!!!" *ahem*Sly)

Anyway, thanks to all you guys! I guess it was a long shot to think there'd be any specifics on the music at this stage, but oh well!

Oh and MrCere---we found out what yr first name is--sweetWink

One thing I DO know [In reply to] Can't Post

Even the most cynical person would need to admit that PJ and GDT are extremely fan-friendly. Each of them have proven it on their own on and away from TORn.

I know TORn had requested a 20-questions, as had every geek-movie website in the world. At least two senior staff that have open lines with him asked GDT for a 20-question the minute he was officially announced (or actually before.) They had a LOT of requests.

So, they hosted a 20-question chat to satisfy the demand and not to play favorites.

I don't believe (can't say I know) the studio had anything to do with this, it was just the team (not just the two directors) wanting to reach out to passionate fans.

And your discovered my first name? I didn't know it was a secret. Cool

Waaaay to early [In reply to] Can't Post

As others have noted, there *is* no script or cast (other than Ian Mckellen) yet. The whole idea was to get us in on things from the start, which is an awesome thing for them to do. If we're patient and let them do what they have to do (they have a LOT of work ahead of them), and we stay tuned, I'm sure they'll let us in on as much as they can as things progress. Smile

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Didn't mean to sound cynical back there, I didn't know it came out like that. But you gotta admit, I got home Saturday night all excited about the Chat and the first thing I see on the Homepage is the news about the June 6 court date and I am going "Oh no, NOT AGAIN", I thought the court case was winding down. And then I was wondering how the Studios were allowing them to do the Chat at all if the court battle was heating up. I've read the thread with Voronwe the Faithful's legal expertise, so I don't know what to think....Crazy.

I said that I really did believe it was just a case of these guys being eager to share what they know with us NO MATTER WHAT.

Anyway.....I'd rather we hear SOMETHING from them at this early stage, rather than waiting! If I were in Wellywood now and they gave me a choice between taking a tour of the Studios and facilities right now as the new paint was drying (so to speak), and waiting a year or even six months until real stuff was starting to happen, well,I gotta say, I LOVE the smell of new paint! *sniff* Those bumps on the wall are starting to look *really* groovy, manLaugh

I'd say though, even though I was disappointed at not learning more script plans (no matter how vague) I'd say we learned a HECK of a lot! I've got goosebumps....

For me, one of the highlights is learning that TH will be shot on 35mm, NOT digital. I love digital, but film has a personality. Plus I am reading that film historians and archivists in Hollywood are shocked at how poorly digital is holding up...the first digital prints from the late 80's/early 90's are already starttng to deteriorate while film stock from decades ago has held up pretty well, needing the minimum of restoration and tweaking if they were untouched. And I hate to think of the projectionsit going the way of the piano-player for films (Cinema Paradisio.)

I noticed that it says you guys had a "long argument" after one Question reply...."scroll down"....but I see only a few sentences. Come one, I wanna read the whole thing! Your arguments are interesting! Wink OH and MrCere, I never checked yr profile....no, I didn't know yr first name:)

EDIT: I finally made it to Gondor! My 1000th post----WOO HOO! Cool

thanks for the comfort - got carried away... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the comfort here.

I'm a frequent member of another Tolkien related blog where most of us discussed very passionately at times how the plot of the Hobbit could be turned into adequate movie scenes. I guess in all our enthusiasm about the films we probably got a bit carried away. So in the end most of us - including myself - were really disappointed after the live chat because most of our personal questions were neither picked up nor really answered.

Well, I'm still glad that the fans here can be involved anyway. Maybe we easily forget the tough circumstances about modern film-making, especially when the Hollywood industry is involved...

(but hey, if New Line/ Warner Bros. interfere too much with Peter Jackson's and Guillermo del Toro's admirable visions, these great directors should just get rid of Hollywood. If all the world-wide fans would make financial contributions, this big project could be independent - sorry, getting carried away again).
;-)
