My god that is beautiful. The EE does a better job of selling me on the CGI Dain, but I really do regret that they didn't use the practical Billy, with that gorgeous axe. What a damn shame.

it seems to be due to Billy's inability to walk around in his armor...

I could be wrong on this, but it sure looks like he's having some trouble moving around in his armor. And that wouldn't work in the film, for sure...

was unfortunately a lame design. They should have gone to other routes of practical if they did not use the CGI Dain imo. And i prefer his great red hammer over this axe to be honest.

The set design is gorgeous, of course, but I'm afraid I don't have too much to say about the penultimate section of the appendices... they're just going over how the locations were made and how impressive they were. Not as interesting to me as characters designs and motivations :-) There is a final section coming up soon that is a half-hour reflection on doing these appendices for 15 years, and saying goodbye to Middle-earth. I imagine that will be one of the best parts of the entire set.

Nor do they mention anything about CGI Dain. I have a feeling that will be unavoidable in the commentary, though we won't get to hear than until the disc release in November.

There was a scene from the ROTK EE I didn't recall, with Gimli and Legolas on a horse, Gimli saying he wished he could get a dwarf army to join them. Like I said, I just didn't recognize it, but people seem familiar with it according to Google.

I can't remember who asked if there was any mention of a Palantir at Dol Guldur, but I'm now watching the video on Dol Guldur, which to me is actually the most interesting location in the film as its corruption extends outward to Greenwood, creating Mirkwood. Anyway, PJ extends it as an old Numenorean fortress that has gone to ruin.

There's a green screen shot of Gandalf looking at a Palantir, which PB saying "we conjectured that there may very well have been a Palantir in there." (Dol Guldur). Daniel Falconer says at one point, they needed to give Gandalf a sense of urgency to get to the mountain. So they were going to use the Palantir to show him what could happen if Smaug didn't die. There's a *very* quick finished shot of him touching the Palantir, and some concept art of Smaug leading legions of Orcs for Sauron. Very cool stuff.

Alan Lee, John Howe and Philippa Boyens describe an excursion Gandalf was to take to the Sea of Rhun, southeast of Erebor. The idea was that Sauron would climb to the talk of this tall rock with a seeing seat (think Amon Hen), and Gandalf would chase him to the top, whereat Sauron would disappear. This got vetoed because, in fact, Gandalf needs to get to the Battle to warn his friends of the impending danger. And so we have "leave Sauron to me."

Are we told or shown anything about it? Thank you again!!! You're very welcome! Unless I mistook her saying she was happy something was cut, I didn't see anything mentioned by her about her favorite scene being reinstated or even mentioned during the section on her character. I'm wrapping up the last hour of appendices now, so I'll report if I see anything along those lines :-)

This got vetoed because, in fact, Gandalf needs to get to the Battle to warn his friends of the impending danger. And so we have "leave Sauron to me." Something like that might have worked if Peter Jackson had kept to something like the timeline of the book, with the White Council assaulting Dol Guldur around the time that the company reached Lake-town, and when that would still have been a month more-or-less before Durin's Day. I am miffed that the "devices of Saruman" did not play a larger role in driving Sauron out of Mirkwood. I also feel that, if Sauron somehow did have a palantir at Dol Guldur then it should have been better looked-after and not just out in the open.

Glad you're enjoying my posts - I wanted to share as much info as I humanly could as soon as I realized the digital release was delayed in many places. There doesn't seem to be any footage of Galadriel reciting black speech; there is a tiny bit of discussion about the ring wraiths and how different all their origins are, but if I recall correctly, they only really mention Kamul the Easterling, who is the Witch King's lieutenant. No Morgul Blade talk.
