Thank Tolkien for the Shire Reckoning!

Quote
"O yes!" he [Gandalf] said in answer to more questions from the hobbit. "You lose track of time inside goblin-tunnels...and it was Monday night or Tuesday morning that we were captured."

Tolkien doesn't provide us in The Hobbit with the exact date when the company was captured by goblins in the Misty Mountains, but by using the Shire-calendar he devised for The Lord of the Rings we can deduce that Bilbo and the Dwarves were captured on the goblins' 'Front Porch' during the night of Monday, July 16. Bilbo's finding of the ring and encounter with Gollum occurred on Thursday, the same day that the company emerged on the east side of the mountains (as determined by Gandalf).

Are you going to start a new thread when the company reaches Beorn's house, gramma? I see we're about due.
