Tolkien and Durin's Day

October 19 is actually a date that JRRT posited for Durin's Day. There are some questions that arise about this if we look at Appendix D of The Lord of the Rings which deals with the calendars of Middle-earth.

Tolkien equates January 9 on the Shire calendar with our New Year's Day, but that would put the Mid-year's Day observation on our June 19 which just feels a bit off-kilter. Douglas A. Anderson notes in The Annotated Hobbit:

Quote
18 The reference here to midsummer is ambiguous. It could mean the summer solstice, about June 21, or it could mean June 24, which is traditionally Mid-summer Day, the feast of St. John the Baptist. Both dates are supported by the Oxford English Dictionary.

If we adjust the date of Mid-summer's Day in the Shire Reckoning to conform with our June 21 then Tolkien's date of October 19 for Durin's Day becomes October 21. The conversions found at Tolkien Gateway and some other sites makes our June 22 the Mid-year's Day of the Hobbits, suggesting that the Durin's Day fell on October 22. October 22 on the Shire calendar works well for the first day of the last week of autumn as described by Thorin at the doorstep to the Secret Door.

I actually prefer to count our June 21 as the Shire's Mid-year's Day; at the same time I consider October 22 (Shire-date) the correct (or at least most likely) date for the Durin's Day of TA 2941.
