My sister had already said she didn't believe O'Brian would have told Thomas about the soap. So she just could not accept that part. Even though they had been thick as thieves at that time, O'Brian knew then that Thomas was unreliable so she wouldn't have expected him to keep that valuable secret.
Of course Rose was brought on to the series to replace Sybil as the resident feisty young girl. (Yawn),
