Although I suppose that the Dwarves that attended Elrond's Council were the elders, while the Dwarves Thorin picked for his little adventure were for the most part the best warriors he could find? Well, maybe not Bombur . . . but I can believe that the youngest ones might not have filled out yet. I was pretty scrawny in my own youth :)
