Links to Reading Room threads for 2001-2002, and 2007-ongoing.

This thread concludes the project, begun in 2004 by hatster, of indexing links to all accessible Reading Room threads. (However, the lists that appear in the responses to this post are not as detailed as the work she did.) The Reading Room was created in 2000, but at some later date all threads from 2000 and earlier were purged – apparently from all active TORN boards. Finding more recent threads –which usually expired within a week of their creation– is not easy either, because the old TORN forums cannot be searched, and can only be opened with great difficulty to show posts more than a few months old. Individual posts open relatively easily, particularly since the new boards went online, but finding them requires having a link.

To that end, here’s how you can find old Reading Room discussions:

LotR Discussion c. Mar. 2000-Jul. 30, 2001 – use the Lasselanta Archive.
Jan. 2, 2001-May 10, 2002 – see responses below.
May 10, 2002-Dec. 22, 2004 – use hatster’s RR index
Dec. 22, 2004-Jun. 30, 2006 (except third LotR discussion) – use this list
LotR Discussion Feb. 7, 2005-Jun. 30, 2006 – use squire’s “Footerama” index
Jul. 1-Sep. 30, 2006 – use this list
Oct. 1-Dec. 31, 2006 – use this list
Jan. 1-Mar. 10, 2007 (old board) – see responses below.
Feb. 8 and later (new boards) – see responses below.

The new Reading Room, which went online in December 2006 and was made public in February 2007, requires no further link-indexing, as the forums now include a search function, and they also can be configured by the user for easy browsing. Update: by request, links to the new RR have been added below, and will be updated approximately every six months.

I also have this information in a series of Excel spreadsheets; send me a PM if you want a copy.

I now will post 28 replies to this message. These will include links to all the previously unindexed threads for 2001 and the first part of 2002, as well as to the relatively few threads that were posted to the Reading Room in early 2007, before the old boards were closed.

I give the subject line, date, and author of each thread. In many cases I have abbreviated the subject line, and also made minor edits for spelling and consistency. Where a subject line is obscure but I have had the opportunity to examine the thread, I have added a short explanatory note. Often that has not happened, and many such titles remain mysterious. Or intriguing.

There were only 103 threads posted in Jan.-Feb. 2007, but there were 1376 threads in 2001, and 1470 posted in just the first four months of 2002. Heady times, hard on the release, and Oscar hopes, of Peter Jackson’s film of FotR. That works out to more than ten new threads posted each day in the Reading Room – which was one of the slower forums! Typically it took three days or less for a thread to expire, i.e., to fall from the first page of the forum and thus be rendered unavailable for further replies. Threads could not be pinned to the top of the forum, which meant that discussion schedules were frequently reposted. There was no personal message system, so threads were sometimes used for communication between members – even by the admins. And the boards were awash in new members brought in by the movies, many of them new to Tolkien, with lots of first-time reader questions. In short, the noise-to-signal ratio for that time is pretty high. But you will find gems. And you can also revisit the first LotR and Silmarillion discussions more easily than before. The Reading Room was originally created to house the first LotR discussion, which started in 2000 on the Main board. In the links below, I set off all regular discussions with a pair of asterisks, as for example: **Silm.: Ch. 23-- Turgon's Pride.

*Admins' Note: This thread is locked. Please post all replies in the designated thread.*

Thank you.
