I’ve a feeling they’ll take the approach of ignoring inconsistencies, and simply showing the events that took place within a vague timeframe and letting the fans worry about how much time is actually passing etc. Hope they don’t introduce any fatal continuity issues. One small but powerful detail I really would like to see included is Gollum referring to the ring as his ‘birthday present’. I missed this detail in The Hobbit, I think it would be a nice touch. We've also heard that The Hunt for Gullum will end the story with Gollum entering Moria. If the film timeline remains intact, that gives us 15 to just short of 16 months from Bilbo's birthday party to Moria Continuity issues makes me think of the entombment of the Ringwraiths in the Hobbit films and the problems that creates for the history of Gondor, particularly for the story of King Eärnur of Gondor. That definitely created headaches for me when I constructed my Tale of Years for Peter Jackson's Third Age.
