The only project done ostensibly for rights retention is The War of the Rohirrim

and I'm actually of the opinion that Rohirrim is a project that, for all its drawbacks, added a lot of new and a lot of richness into the film series.

I mean, look at Lord of the Rings itself: Peter Jackson took it on TO STOP WETA FX FROM DISBANDING. Just because there are these ulterior motivations doesn't make the art less artistic!
