Actors had been talked off of taller trees

In Reply To
Viggo has even said in order for him to come back, it would need to make sense with the story and his current age.

He said that at some point yes, but he hadn't harped on it very consistently in interviews: I think he might have been talked off of the "if it makes sense for the age I am now" tree: actors have been talked off of taller trees before. If the report I read is true then he was game, but the prospect of deaging Aragorn throughout a movie in which he will feature alongside other deaged characters and a motion-capture lead was simply too costly. The studio, it will be recalled, is turning a corner but is still in a tricky spot and we can compare this to the arguments they had on the budgeting of Heat 2 recently. (I don't want to turn this into some tabloid scandal between filmmakers and studio: it's just the case of reality hitting home, and I think all parties came to realize it just wasn't feasible).

Personally, I really don't need a framing device from OUTSIDE the flow of the storytelling. People talk about Old Bilbo in The Hobbit, but that's totally different from an elderly Elessar: the Older Bilbo was one we see on the eve of the Farewell Party, whereas an old Elessar would be somebody we see after the ENTIRE storyline had concluded: it's a "spoiler", as it were.

Jaime is just our Aragorn for this movie. He's almost exactly the age Viggo was so in spite of any protestations from Andy (via his otherwise delightful interview with Mashable) that he's "in a different stage in his life" it really isn't the case that this is a "younger Aragorn": He'll just be wearing a different face. A big blow for me, personally, but I refuse to let it condemn the movie.
