I think the movie might switch between the Fourth Age and events taking place during The Fellowship of the Ring, maybe even with younger actors playing the four hobbits in the past just as Martin Freeman was cast as the younger Bilbo. Now, lemme see if I can work out a probable timeline of events: - September 22, 1400 (Shire-date): Bilbo's (and Frodo's) birthday party. - September 1401: Frodo departs from Bag End. Earlier events of Shadow of the Past take place. - October 1401: Frodo is stabbed on Weathertop. - October 25, 1401: The Council of Elrond. - December 25, 1401: The Fellowship departs Rivendell. - March 25, 1402: The Ring is destroyed. The Fall of Sauron. - September 1402: The hobbits return to the Shire ("twelve months to the day after we left"). - May 1, 1403: Samwise marries Rose. - March 25, 1404: Elanor the Fair is born. - Sometime in 1405: Frodo Gardner is born. - October 1405: Frodo is ill on the anniversary of his stabbing on Weathertop. - September 29, 1405: Bilbo and Frodo depart over the sea with the Three Keepers. - 1406: At the start of the year the Fourth Age begins in the Reckoning of the Shire. At the Free Fair, Samwise Gamgee is elected Mayor of Micheal Delving. - 1407: Rose, daughter of Samwise, is born. - 1409: Merry, son of Samwise, is born. - 1411: Pippin, son of Samwise, is born. - 1413: Goldilocks, daughter of Samwise, is born. Samwise is elected for his second term as Mayor. - 1414: Hamfast, son of Samwise, is born. - 1415: Daisy, daughter of Samwise, is born. - 1417: Primrose, daughter of Samwise, is born. - 1419: Bilbo, son of Samwise is born. The Fourth Age events of Shadow of the Past take place. If we allow for an extra year for Gandalf to return to Bag End and see Frodo and Sam depart, add one year to all dates after Bilbo's birthday party {except for Samwise's election(s) as Mayor).
