Once again, IF this is the real design, it does give away something important - it's very traditional. Especially in the sense of "the tradition of Tolkien illustration".
Knowing them and knowing us, and knowing them knowing us, I could almost buy the idea of them letting this design leak purposefully to calm us down from our time-to-time "they're ruining the Hobbit" hysteria.  And then it took us this long to notice... PJ must have been face palming... 
At its heart, heroism is growing adult. Growing adult is defying the fears gained in childhood.
