It's strange, then, that he was "co-opted" to a much greater extent by Sixties radicals, anti-war activists and the Counterculture, cultural movements which Tolkien also heartily disapproved of. I don't find it strange. Tolkien had a great many interests and beliefs, not all of which are commonly found in a single person, so it makes sense to me that his work resonates with different readers in different ways (sometimes radically different ways). That's part of what makes him so popular.
