Ultimately, you need to present POSITIVE evidence that the decision to make it a trilogy was studio-driven, and...there isn't any. All the evidence is it was Peter's decision, based on the footage, and there's simply no good reason (that is to say, substantive evidence) to question that. The idea was Peter's. We have a fairly comprehensive understanding of when and how it came about. They simply shot huge amounts of stuff, and to squash it into two films you would end up with 210 minute films, so they split it up.
