Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires -- a movie guide by Calx Rain

I read Calx Rain's Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires movie guide. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it. This self-published book might have begun with the intention of being an official tie-in to the animated film (being released later this month) but, if so, the project was dropped by Warner Bros. long before it was completed. It looks like something you'd expect to find at a random table in a comics convention's vendor hall: Poorly designed paging; no illustrations outside of the (uncredited hand-drawn art of the front cover; large font to increase the page count. And then there's the repetition. Oh lord, the repetition! If all of the redundant material was excised, this 134 page book would be little more than a pamphlet. Seriously, I think two-thirds of the text would be gone. The social media platform known as 'X' is referenced so much that I think the author is getting kickbacks from Elon Musk. And if Rain had any access to the production, it seems to have been cut off well before the film was completed or even fully cast. I doubt that the manuscript was ever placed before an editor. Or maybe it had, and that's why it never received official publication. That's not to say that the book has no good points. The guide provides a decent overview of the film's plot, setting, musical score and main characters. Several members of the principal cast are highlighted (though not enough of them). However, we don't get a comprehensive list of the main cast or crew. Nor are we privy to any pre-production art, promotional art, or images from the film. No interviews or cast biographies. All in all, this is a very disappointing guide. Grade: D. 3 out of 10.
