about an intergalactic inn that hosts an unusual array of guests, magically creating the right ambiance for each. Inns are neutral territory, so the innkeepers are often tasked with hosting important events; within the inn, their powers are significant so they can usually prevent trouble (if you make a move on another guest, the inn is likely to drop you through the floor into a prison designed just for you). But sometimes they do have to go through one of the many portals to other worlds and, you know, have adventures. My favorite character so far is the giant porcupine chef who brings the drama, like any top chef, to everything he does. Also, the Douglases (they are a couple, althrough writing under her name) have some pretty interesting insights to offer about various political systems and the pros and cons of each. I get the feeling that a constitutional monarchy/meritocracy is their preferred system. Still reading Alan Taylor's The Civil War of 1812.
