When Gandalf leaves the Shire, do we know for certain that only a few months-year has passed? What is the evidence? Is there a chance the movie will retcon the gap back in? We do. We can see the evidence at Bilbo's birthday party with the presence of Merry, Pippin and Samwise (and Rose Cotton for that matter). At the time of Bilbo's party, these hobbits should be much younger (remembering that hobbits reach adulthood at around 33 years old). - Meriadoc Brandybuck: 19 years. - Peregrin Took: 11 years. - Samwise Gamgee: 21 years. - Rose Cotton: 17 years. The best estimate that I can provide is that a little over 13 months pass in The Fellowship of the Ring film from Bilbo's party to the Council of Elrond. We might conceivably add another year onto that. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies provides further confirmation with Thranduil's knowledge of the Ranger Strider. Aragorn should still be a 10 year-old boy called Estel at the time of the Battle of Five Armies, being fostered by Elrond in secrecy. Instead, Aragorn is known as a Ranger, seemingly in his mid-20s. Could Peter Jackson's time compression be retconned? Well, it could be ignored if we don't see The Hunt for Gollum as directly connected to the previous films. But that would be very difficult if we have actors returning in their old roles.
