I see your point, but

I personally think it could have been amazing if done a certain way. I shamelessly love Sauron as a character, and drool at any and all representations of him delivered onscreen, as long as done well.

EDIT: Also, if I may, it is about more than just him taking physical form. Sauron is a different entity with the ring than he is without it. He doesn't cease to be a threat without the ring, he just becomes near invincible with it.

Also, per another post on here, Sauron has nothing left to lose at this point, and is depending on the Nazgul to save his hide by fetching the ring. Perhaps, he looses his cool and strides into battle to stop the new King of Gondor and turn the tide, thereby making the return of his precious ring that much more possible. All plausible me thinks...
