This much I can say in defense of Jackson: It could have been so much worse! (I assume you've read the John Boorman treatment?) But nonetheless one could weep in considering what a Kurosawa or a Lean could have done with it. Still, therein lies the Catch-22: any director who wanted to approach the LR with the high seriousness required would never in a million years have got funding for it. You couldn't do it at all for less than a blockbuster budget, and producers don't invest blockbuster money unless what they have in mind as a model is Star Wars or the MCU.
