Maeglin has a clear Fëanorian connection, but

you could also say Fëanor and Maeglin are incarnations of the same reoccurring "great magical smith" theme, and thus equals. In this they're accompanied by myriad of other characters from Aulë to Telchar and Saruman. I wouldn't call it boring, but then again I'm biased because I love the smith motif. And especially one of them... 
I didn't remember Tolkien called Maeglin the last hope of the Noldor. That is indeed very interesting. Perhaps Maeglin could have functioned as an instrument for peace between Noldor, Sindar, Avari and Dwarves, considering he had connections to them all? Had he not become a traitor and had Turgon died, would the throne of the High King fallen to him or Gil-Galad?
