While I normally google such questions, I'm afraid the keywords are just too broad in this case. Do you happen to know what "cold meats" meant to Tolkien, or put another way, is it what we in the USA would call deli meats? Sliced, cooked turkey, or maybe pastrami, or whatever a deli would have, maybe chicken salad? I was once sure I knew what "sweetbreads" were because it seemed so obvious: donuts, muffins, sugary scones. For Ulmo's sake, it should not mean thymus and pancreas! Waiter, send this back to the kitchen and bring me some blueberry muffins. PS. I agree: I don't need the text to tell me Goldberry & Tom were vegetarians, I just assume so.
