TH and AtMoM will both be filming in 2011, that wouldn't have stopped Pearlman from doing it; after all, he's not the lead in either project, and Martin Freeman's doing two projects at once.
Probably, as with Brian Cox, PJ's vision for the character just didn't jive with GtD's. Too bad, really, because IMO Cox would have made a perfect Thorin and Pearlman would have been great for Beorn and/or the Great Goblin.
Or it could be that Ron was nervous about jumping on-board another successful franchise. After all, he did "Alien: Ressurection" and "Star Trek: Nemesis" and look how those turned out!
